Steven Spielberg chose to reimagine a beloved animated comedy from the 1990s in 2020. Years after the new version finished airing, it’s now gaining popularity through on-demand rental services.
According to FlixPatrol, the 2020 revival of Animaniacs has quickly become popular on the Apple TV Store. It started at number 12 on May 27th, rose to number 7 the next day, and has remained in sixth place from May 29th through May 31st. Steven Spielberg, who also executive produced the original 1993 Animaniacs, returned for this new series, continuing the adventures of the Warner siblings with the same playful energy that fans of the original show remember.
2020’s Animaniacs Revival Was a Hit with Critics & Audiences
The recent revival of Animaniacs brought back the original voice actors who made the show so beloved. Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, and Tress MacNeille reprised their roles as the Warner siblings, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot. Fans also enjoyed hearing Robert Paulsen and Maurice LaMache return as Pinky and the Brain, adding to the show’s nostalgic appeal.
After a 20-year break, the Animaniacs returned with their signature chaotic energy and quick-moving storylines. The new series followed the characters as they adjusted to modern life, with each episode featuring a collection of short, funny segments.
The show had three seasons. The first two seasons each contained 13 episodes and around 40 segments – season one had 42, and season two had 44. The final season, which aired in 2023, was a bit shorter with 10 episodes and 37 segments.
In 2018, it was announced that Animaniacs would be coming back, thanks to a deal between Steven Spielberg, Warner Bros., and Hulu. As part of the agreement, Hulu also gained the rights to stream all episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures, the original Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain.
He was just as dedicated to the reboot as he had been to the original series. Reports indicate he attended every planning meeting and strongly emphasized keeping key aspects of the original, like the cast and musical score. Spielberg’s commitment likely played a big part in the revival’s success.
The recent Animaniacs revival has been well-received, earning a 90% average score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70% average audience score. Critics generally agree that it’s a fun and successful update to the original series, even if it had a rocky start.
The Animaniacs Reboot Followed In Its Predecessor’s Footsteps
The original Animaniacs series ran from 1993 to 1998 and was a huge hit. It won eight Daytime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award, and continued to be popular in reruns for several years after its initial broadcast. The recent revival also achieved a good level of success, though it lasted for fewer seasons.
The Hulu revival of Animaniacs received six Daytime Emmy Award nominations in 2021 and ultimately won four. The show also earned recognition from other prestigious organizations, including a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program from the Producers Guild of America and an Annie Award nomination for its music.
Animaniacs is now streaming on Hulu and available for purchase on the Apple TV store.
