You can find flashier and more widely known fantasy shows on streaming services. However, when it comes to quality, style, and pure enjoyment, very few compare to The Legend of Vox Machina. In fact, the only other fantasy series that comes close is The Mighty Nein, which shares the same creators.

From 2022 to 2025, The Legend of Vox Machina consistently delivered a captivating experience with its clever writing, strong stories, and memorable characters. A key to its success is that the original creators remain heavily involved in the Prime Video adaptation. The show stands out from other TV series thanks to the obvious passion and creative dedication poured into every season.

After the huge Chroma Conclave storyline wrapped up in season 3, and with Prime Video announcing that The Legend of Vox Machina will finish with season 5, fans worried the group might finally start falling apart – and this time, it wouldn’t be because of Scanlan’s antics.

Fortunately, any worries about the show’s quality are quickly put to rest. Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina improves upon some issues from the previous season and continues the series’ impressive track record, all while boldly ignoring typical storytelling expectations.

While the core group was often separated, this allowed for deeper connections between characters like Vex and Percy, Vax and Keyleth, and Grog and Pike, as well as exploring Taryon’s personality. This approach kept the story fresh and prepared each character for a final season where they will likely reunite as a complete team.

Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina continues to surprise viewers by boldly mixing genres. As the threat of the Whispered One grows, the show leans heavily into horror, featuring creepy cults, unsettling rituals, and graphic imagery. But just when you think you have it figured out, the season throws in a classic heist storyline, complete with its own opening credits. Adding to the show’s increasingly comedic tone is the introduction of Taryon Darrington, a lovable and hilariously clumsy character known for throwing gems.

Watching how each member deals with their newfound fame challenges our understanding of the group and what Vox Machina represents.

Is Vox Machina a group of true heroes, or simply a collection of imperfect people who sometimes succeed? The fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina doesn’t offer a simple answer – and that’s precisely its purpose. It challenges everything we thought we knew about Vox Machina, setting the stage for season 5, where their lasting impact will finally be determined.

Throughout the season, Percy and Vex grapple with their privileged backgrounds, Keyleth takes bigger and bigger chances to protect Vax from a terrible fate, and Pike struggles with her beliefs. Vox Machina (Just About) Gets Away With Replacing Scanlan

Considering Scanlan Shorthalt finally reconnected with his daughter at the end of season 3, it’s not shocking he felt somewhat removed from the rest of Vox Machina in the new season. However, it’s still surprising how little we see of him in season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina – he mostly appears as a supporting character in their latest story.

It’s true that Scanlan’s departure has left a noticeable gap in the group. While his underdog status and playful teasing were initially fun, Scanlan had started to develop as a character beyond those familiar traits. Now, when Vox Machina reunites in season 4, the dynamic just isn’t quite the same – something is definitely missing.

Taryon Darrington is a truly memorable character. While he might seem strange at first, especially if you’re new to the original story, it doesn’t take long to fall in love with him. Once you get to know this inexperienced adventurer, you’ll quickly realize he’s a valuable and beloved member of the group.

Taryon was a standout moment this season, perfectly reflecting back to Vox Machina the consequences of their year of luxury, fame, and becoming powerful Avatars. He wasn’t the companion they wanted, but he was exactly what they needed, and that made all the difference.

Even with Taryon joining the group, it doesn’t completely fill the void left by Scanlan. While it would be great to see both characters in season 5 of The Legend of Vox Machina, it’s hard to imagine them working well together, as they both seem determined to annoy the others. We’ll have to wait and see how the final team shapes up.

Even before its fourth season, The Legend of Vox Machina was the top fantasy show on television. These new episodes have solidified its position, and it’s now clear the series is poised to finish strong – potentially surpassing even the most expensive live-action fantasy shows.
