Warning: Spoilers ahead for Backrooms.Backrooms is redefining the horror genre.
The new A24 movie started with a popular post on the 4chan website in 2019. It then grew into a series of short, “found footage” videos on YouTube created by Kane Pixels/Parsons in 2022, which quickly became very popular, gaining millions of views. A24 noticed the potential of these “Backrooms” videos and hired the teenage creator to write and direct the full-length movie, which is now a box office hit.
In a recent interview with Polygon, director Parsons discussed the popular horror film Backrooms and the questions fans have about its ambiguous ending and the fate of the character Clark. Clark, portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is a struggling architect and furniture store owner who stumbles upon a strange doorway leading to a bizarre, seemingly infinite world of hallways and rooms.
Clark encounters a monstrous figure who is revealed to be a twisted, pirate-themed version of himself – a being Clark nicknames “Pirate Clark.” Surprisingly, as Clark starts to come to terms with this monster and accept it, Pirate Clark attacks and kills him. Parsons describes this new reality as an “echo chamber” for Clark, explaining that the environment is increasingly becoming a projection of his own inner thoughts and feelings, manifested externally as if to serve his needs. Essentially, Pirate Clark represents Clark’s own self, reflected back at him.
When asked about the shocking death, Parsons explained that he prefers not to discuss the details of his work. He didn’t want to seem evasive, but he worries that his interpretations will be given too much weight by his audience, who generally trust his perspective over their own. He wants to be cautious about what he says, as his words could be taken very seriously.
Okay, so after watching the film, the director really digs into what was going on inside Pirate Clark’s head to explain why he did what he did – ultimately, why he attacked and killed Clark. It wasn’t just a random act; it was driven by his psychological state, and that’s presented as the core reason for his downfall. It’s a surprisingly deep dive into the character’s motivations, and honestly, it makes the whole thing much more impactful.
Clark might have simply been very hungry when he attacked, and there’s no real story reason behind it. However, the way the story is told suggests something more. Unfortunately, we’ll never know for sure, because the story doesn’t reveal Clark’s thoughts.
When questioned about Pirate Clark and his evolving connection to the original Clark – and whether this could extend to mirroring other entities – Parsons declined to discuss the potential consequences for the Backrooms universe. “I’m unable to comment on that at this time,” Parsons stated, “as it’s something I need to keep under wraps for future projects.” Hopefully, this means Parsons plans to revisit this storyline, either through his YouTube channel or in potential sequels to the popular horror series.
Backrooms is available to watch in theaters.
