Fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl have a lot to look forward to! A live-action TV series based on Matt Dinniman’s popular books is officially in the works. After a long wait for news, it’s become one of the most anticipated fantasy shows in development. While we’ll have to be patient for Carl and Princess Donut’s on-screen adventures, Prime Video offers a great fantasy option in the meantime: The Mighty Nein. It’s a fantastic show that’s just the right length to enjoy over a weekend.
In 2025, Prime Video launched the first season of The Mighty Nein, an eight-episode animated series that immerses viewers in a world of magic and fantastical creatures. The show is based on a Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by the voice actors of Critical Role, a company known for its love of tabletop role-playing games, including stars like Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, and Matt Mercer. While the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starring Chris Pine takes place within the traditional D&D universe, The Mighty Nein features a completely original setting. The series has been critically acclaimed, earning a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
I’ve been following the news about Dungeon Crawler Carl, and it’s cool to hear it’s not directly connected to the Dungeons & Dragons universe, much like The Mighty Nein campaign wasn’t. I mean, any show mixing role-playing with fantasy is going to draw comparisons, but it sounds like Carl and Princess Donut will be exploring a totally new world. We won’t see them running into classic D&D villains like Vecna or mind flayers, which is fine by me! Still, with Carl’s talking cat sidekick, it’s going to be pretty obvious right away that this Peacock series is a fantasy adventure.
The Mighty Nein Is Part Of A Larger Universe Worth Your Time
Though The Mighty Nein felt fresh when it arrived on Prime Video in 2025, it actually built upon an established world. The animated series The Legend of Vox Machina came first in 2022, and its success practically ensured a spinoff would also do well. The two shows aren’t exactly the same—for example, Vox Machina has more episodes per season, while The Mighty Nein features longer individual episodes.
If you’re looking to dive into the world of Exandria, now is a great time to start with The Mighty Nein. Since the show has been picked up for a second season, you can jump in and follow Caleb, Nott, Jester, Fjord, Mollymauk, Beau, and Yasha’s adventures knowing it won’t be cut short. With only eight episodes totaling a little over six hours, you can easily binge-watch The Mighty Nein over a weekend and enjoy a richly detailed fantasy story.
The eight-episode season is a good way to explore this fantasy world without having to invest in all three seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina right away. With the fourth season of Vox Machina coming out this summer, The Mighty Nein could be a perfect introduction for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl while they wait for the live-action series.
What We Know About Dungeon Crawler Carl’s Upcoming TV Show
In 2024, it was announced that Matt Dinniman’s popular webcomic, Dungeon Crawl Carl, would be adapted into a TV series, with some well-known creators involved. Seth MacFarlane and Chris Yost signed on as executive producers. MacFarlane’s work on The Orville demonstrates his experience with similar genres, and Yost has contributed to shows like The Mandalorian, Cowboy Bebop, and the Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok. An update in 2026 confirmed that the Dungeon Crawler Carl series is currently being developed for streaming on Peacock.
Matt Dinniman is now an executive producer, joining Seth MacFarlane and Rick Yost, who is also writing the series. Though it hasn’t been officially greenlit for a full season, the basic premise – as reported by Variety – gives us a good idea of what the show will be about.
Almost all of humanity has been destroyed by aliens, and the few people left are forced to compete in a brutal game show for their survival. It’s a terrible situation to begin with, but it gets worse: you’re barefoot, and your teammate is a snobby, talking cat who wears a tiara.
Get ready for Dungeon Crawler World: Earth! When the apocalypse hits, Coast Guard veteran Carl unexpectedly teams up with his ex-girlfriend’s pampered show cat, Princess Donut, to battle monsters, aliens, a rogue A.I., and even other people – all while a TV crew films their every move. Staying alive isn’t the priority… keeping the show going is.
Matt Dinniman, discussing plans for a new show based on RPG stories, emphasized the importance of visual quality. He explained they wouldn’t move forward unless the show looked fantastic, referencing the high production values of Ted and The Orville – both produced by Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door. Dinniman believes the show’s success will largely depend on how good it looks.
As of today, the actors for characters like Carl and Princess Donut haven’t been chosen yet. When Peacock announced they were making a Dungeon Crawler Carl show in early April, the producer mentioned they were planning to do some computer-generated image tests with Princess Donut and other elements. The show is still in the beginning stages of production, so fans likely won’t see it air until sometime after 2026.
There are currently eight books in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and it’s also a good idea to check out The Mighty Nein and The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime Video. You won’t spoil either story by watching the shows, and you’ll easily recognize the role-playing game aspects that inspired them.
