Mortal Kombat II has knocked out the competition with a new box office record.
The 2026 film Mortal Kombat II continues the story from the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie and is the fourth film in the live-action series. Director Simon McQuoid brings back the original cast – including Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Damon Herriman, and Hiroyuki Sanada – and introduces new actors Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Released in theaters on May 8th, the film has already earned over $100 million worldwide.
As of May 28th, Mortal Kombat II has earned $122.3 million worldwide, according to data from The Numbers. This makes it the highest-grossing film in the Mortal Kombat series, surpassing the original 1995 movie which earned $122.2 million globally. Remarkably, it achieved this in only three weeks.
While Mortal Kombat II currently holds the record for highest-grossing film in the series, that’s only true when not accounting for inflation. When adjusted for inflation, the original Mortal Kombat movie earned more, with a total of $266.2 million. Nevertheless, Mortal Kombat II remains the second highest-grossing film in the franchise, exceeding the earnings (both raw and adjusted) of both the 2021 movie and 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Here’s a look at the worldwide box office numbers for all four films:
| Title | Worldwide Box Office | Adjusted Box Office |
|---|---|---|
| Mortal Kombat (1995) | $122.2 million | $266.2 million |
| Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997) | $51.4 million | $106 million |
| Mortal Kombat (2021) | $83.6 million | $104.25 million |
| Mortal Kombat II (2026) | $122.3 million (& counting) | N/A |
I’ve been following the box office numbers for the new Mortal Kombat movie, and honestly, it looks like it’s going to be tough for it to beat the original’s total earnings. Right now, it needs to make over $100 million more than it has to do that, and considering everything, I don’t think it’s very likely to happen.
The movie’s performance is declining quickly—it fell out of the top five highest-grossing films after only three weeks. Plus, the summer movie season is getting competitive, with several big releases coming out. Already in theaters is The Mandalorian and Grogu, and next month will bring Masters of the Universe, Scary Movie, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl.
The upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie sequel might face challenges despite breaking franchise records. With a reported budget of $80 million – making it the most expensive film in the series and also the highest-grossing so far – it needs to earn around $200 million worldwide just to break even. While this is more than the original 1995 movie earned, reaching that goal still appears difficult.
It’s uncertain whether Mortal Kombat II will be a financial success. While it probably won’t earn enough money in theaters to cover its costs, it might be able to make up the difference through digital rentals, streaming, and DVD/Blu-ray sales. However, a significant amount of revenue will be needed from these sources if the studio wants to make a third movie in this series.
