How Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Yellowstone Spinoff Breaks A Classic TV Tradition Detailed By Dutton Ranch Star

Dutton Ranch is breaking new ground.

Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone spin-off faces the challenge of following the original Paramount+ series, which concluded in 2024 after five seasons filled with both on-screen storylines and behind-the-scenes issues. While the new show isn’t expected to drastically change the formula, Dutton Ranch still has the potential to surprise viewers with fresh elements alongside familiar themes, according to a member of the cast.

Natalie Lind, who plays Oreana, recently told ScreenRant that she was surprised by a scene in Yellowstone where her character is unexpectedly caught in a difficult situation with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Carter (Finn Little). Lind admitted she would have reacted dramatically herself, but was pleased that Oreana instead showed strength and stood her ground against the intimidating Beth.

Lind described Oreana as commanding and attention-seeking, but also assertive. Kelly Reilly, who plays Oreana, specifically asked to explore a respectful dynamic between Oreana and Beth, noticing that viewers anticipated conflict between them. Reilly wanted to show mutual respect instead, recognizing what the audience expected from their characters’ relationship.

Lind believes Beth sees a reflection of her younger self and Rip in Carter and Oreana. While the situation with Carter is certainly unexpected, it reminds Beth of the passionate beginnings of her relationship with Rip, and she identifies with Oreana in a strange way.

Lind was thrilled with the unexpected direction of the relationship between Oreana and Beth at the Dutton Ranch. She appreciated that the show avoided the cliché of a daughter disliking her mother’s boyfriend. Lind explained that a unique and interesting connection developed between the two characters, which the show explored further throughout the season, also revealing more about Oreana’s past and family.

Lind surprisingly had a great time filming the scene where her character breaks into the room, even though it involved some awkward moments. She explained, “I really loved filming that scene. Nudity scenes are always a little awkward with the pasties and tape, but working with Finn and having Kelly there made it a lot of fun.”

The next episode of Dutton Ranch premieres on Paramount+ on May 29.
