Okay, so I just heard about James May’s visit to the Tesla Diner in LA, and honestly, he didn’t hold back! He apparently stopped by for a bite and called the whole experience ‘dismal.’ Sounds like it wasn’t a great visit for him!
In July 2025, Tesla launched its first Tesla Diner in Los Angeles. This unique location provides Tesla owners with a dedicated spot to park, charge their vehicles, and enjoy a meal while they do so.
Since its initial success, the Tesla Diner brand has expanded with new locations around the world. However, the original diner in California remains a popular destination for those curious about the experience.
That also includes James May, the former host of Top Gear and The Grand Tour, who didn’t enjoy his experience.
Tesla has opened its first diner in Hollywood, offering a unique experience with round-the-clock access. The diner boasts 80 Supercharger stalls for electric vehicles, massive 66-foot movie screens, and even robots that serve customers. Diners can enjoy their meals in specially designed Cybertruck-themed burger boxes.

James May disappointed by Tesla Diner
For his YouTube channel, James May visited the Tesla Diner and tried a hot dog. He gave it a middling rating—a ‘three or four’ out of ten—and thought the prices were very high.
May described the experience as disappointing, noting he was stuck in a very hot car while eating a not-very-good hot dog, all for around £50. He also dismissed the diner’s outdoor screen as a temporary feature, predicting it would become unnecessary once Tesla cars can directly access services like Netflix.
The food wasn’t great and was too expensive. The idea of watching a movie while dining felt unnecessary, although the restaurant’s design was interesting, it lacked warmth. It was also frustrating having to order a cookie through the app when I could clearly see it right there on the counter.

Captain Slow also felt the experience didn’t really capture the feel of a classic American diner, and he actually became bored enough to stop charging his car before he’d intended to.
He went on to say he really disliked feeling let down by situations like this. He pointed out there was a lot of security, and questioned what they thought anyone would even do – maybe steal a little power? He jokingly urged people to support their local diners instead.
The Tesla Diner might not appeal to all travelers, but those visiting Las Vegas will soon have a new attraction: a giant In-N-Out Burger restaurant built on top of a large shopping mall.
