Although Sinners might have been a better fit for release during the Halloween season instead of in April on the 2025 movie calendar, it’s clear that the vampire film, directed by Ryan Coogler, is a major critical success and has performed well at the box office. Michael B. Jordan starred as the twins Smoke and Stack, and he was joined by Hailee Steinfeld, who played Mary, Stack’s former girlfriend. A line delivered by her character became widely popular online for mature content, and Steinfeld discussed how uncomfortable it was to have that specific quote repeated to her in public.
At the beginning of Sinners, Stack informs Mary that he previously warned her to stay away from him. I get that Sinners fans are excited, but it might be best not to bring up that particular line if you ever meet Hailee Steinfeld. Follow Davis’s lead and either mention just a portion of it, or talk about another scene with Mary that you liked. It’s a situation where you can avoid an awkward encounter while still enjoying the meme on TikTok.
Hailee Steinfeld was surprised by what resonated with the Sinners audience regarding her portrayal of Mary, but she acknowledges that predicting audience reactions is always difficult. She explained it this way:
I really wasn’t anticipating that particular line – or any of the lines from Mary that people focused on – to become so popular. You can never predict when something will really take off… and it’s always fascinating to see which parts of a message resonate with people and how they share it.
