Jason Thomas Nichols, also known online as the “Viral Doorbell Intruder,” has been deemed unfit to stand trial by a psychologist. This follows a frightening home invasion that was recorded on video.
In April, a video showing Nichols aggressively hitting the front door of a home in Fairfield, California, became widely shared online. A woman and a child were inside at the time, and the homeowner, who was not there, watched the events live through the home’s security camera before quickly returning home.
Police reports indicate that Nichols first attempted to break in through the front door, then entered the house through a sliding glass door. When the homeowner returned, he grabbed a shovel and confronted Nichols, resulting in a fight where both men were injured in the head.
Okay, so this is getting weird. That guy from the Ring doorbell footage – the one who called himself ‘Harry Dresden’ – it turns out he actually broke into the house. The homeowner was seriously not happy and even threatened to whack him with a shovel! Apparently, his name is Jason Thomas Nichols. I saw the video and honestly, it’s pretty crazy.

Viral Doorbell Intruder competency battle reportedly emerges
True-crime commentators The Facts Dude and Robbie Harvey reported on X that a psychologist appointed by the court determined Nicholas was not mentally capable of participating in legal proceedings.
Reports indicate that Nichols’ lawyer questioned his mental state on April 23rd, citing a specific section of California law (Penal Code Section 1368). As a result, legal proceedings were temporarily stopped while doctors evaluated his mental competency.
According to The Facts Dude, the psychologist appointed by the court filed their report with the Solano County Superior Court on May 22nd, and the defense agreed with the assessment. However, the Deputy District Attorney disagreed with the report, so a formal trial to determine competency is now likely to happen.
Robbie Harvey stated that the District Attorney disagreed with the psychologist’s assessment, and a trial to determine the defendant’s competency is scheduled for July.
In Solano County, the District Attorney has denied a defense request following a psychologist’s assessment that Jason Thomas Nichols is currently unable to participate in legal proceedings. On April 23, 2026, Nichols’ lawyer officially questioned his mental competency, citing section 1368 of the California Penal Code. The…

In California, psychiatric evaluations used in court to determine if someone is fit to stand trial aren’t usually open to the public like arrest records or details of criminal charges.
According to official records from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, Nichols is currently being held at the Justice Center Detention Facility in Fairfield, California. He hasn’t been sentenced yet and his bail is set at $250,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 15, 2026, at 8:30 AM in Department 25 of the Fairfield courthouse.
The hearing in June doesn’t automatically disprove the findings from the July competency evaluations. It could have been a chance to discuss disagreements about the evaluations and plan the next steps in the case.
Nichols is currently facing several charges, including breaking and entering, assault with a weapon that could cause serious harm, making criminal threats to instill fear, and property damage.
The video quickly went viral because of Nichols’ strange actions, including a surprising pop culture reference. He unexpectedly stated he was “Harry Dresden,” the main character – a wizard detective – from the book series The Dresden Files.
