A paraglider is getting a lot of attention online after an incredible survival story. While flying in Austria, they collided with a small plane, which ripped through their parachute, but they still managed to survive.
A video posted to Instagram captured the shocking moment a small Cessna 172 airplane flew directly through a paraglider’s parachute, causing the paraglider to fall from the sky.
The video shows the paraglider quickly deploying a backup parachute and landing safely after the incident.
I’m still reeling from watching the video, but apparently, the paraglider – a woman named Sabrina – is okay! She posted that she can’t believe she’s even writing about it, and thankfully, she only ended up with some bruises and general soreness. It’s such a relief to hear she wasn’t seriously hurt.
Paraglider says incident will go through “proper legal channels”
Sabrina later expressed her gratitude to the paragliding community in Zell am See, Austria, and the company that made their reserve parachute, saying it helped save their life.
After the video went viral, they answered some questions people had. Sabrina explained that they were flying legally in that location when the incident happened.
“I actually still can’t believe that I’m sitting here typing this,” Sabrina said in her Instagram post. They stated that planes flying in the area are required to yield to paragliders and other aircraft using rising air currents, and confirmed that the plane’s pilot landed without incident.
The paraglider stated they know who was flying the glider and assured everyone the matter would be handled through the legal system calmly and officially.
The statement also pushed back against online comments blaming either party for the accident.
Even with rules in place, mistakes can still occur. Hopefully, this will encourage everyone to be more careful and focused while flying.
The pilots also stated that this incident led them to start using FLARM technology on all future flights. FLARM is a system that warns pilots of nearby aircraft, and it’s frequently used in gliders and small planes to prevent collisions.
