Telegram to Provide More User Data to Government After CEO’s Arrest

On a recent post on their messaging platform, Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, announced notable adjustments to the app’s terms of service.

The updated privacy policy for the app indicates that Telegram may disclose a user’s IP address and phone number to legal authorities when they are investigating potential criminal activity.

After Durov’s arrest in France last month, the modifications occurred as authorities claimed that his firm allowed misuse of the application for illicit activities such as drug dealing, spreading Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and fraud.

The widely-used encrypted messaging service, Telegram, has experienced tension with Russian officials in the past, as they sought to prohibit the app in 2018, which eventually prompted its founder, Durov, to relocate to Europe.

39-year-old individual, who refutes all accusations, has been mandated to remain within French borders until the probe concludes. At present, he is out under bond.
