DJ Hennes is the new director of the Market Participants Division at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig announced the appointment on Monday, highlighting Hennes’ experience with cryptocurrency and prediction markets.
The Market Participants Division oversees financial firms like brokers, swap dealers, and fund managers that are registered with the CFTC.
A Crypto and Prediction Markets Mandate
Hennes will be in charge of checking for rule compliance, handling registrations, and working with groups like the National Futures Association to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Mike Selig described the appointment as a key part of the agency’s efforts to update how it monitors derivatives trading.
Since becoming chairman in December 2025, the Trump appointee has been a strong advocate for establishing clear regulations for things like cryptocurrencies and officially overseen prediction markets.
Selig stated that his extensive experience helping companies in the financial sector, particularly his knowledge of cryptocurrency and prediction markets, will be incredibly helpful as the CFTC works to update its rules for the future.
This new hire joins the CFTC as it develops rules for event-based contracts and challenges state-level limits on prediction market platforms.
Hennes Background
Hennes is joining the CFTC after working at KPMG, where he helped banks and brokers follow the rules for trading digital asset derivatives. Previously, he spent 15 years at Promontory Financial Group, ultimately leading their capital markets division in the Americas.
Hennes graduated from Vanderbilt University with degrees in both history and economics. He’s also shared his expertise on how prediction markets should be regulated, including participating in a discussion hosted by KPMG.
Hennes expressed her excitement about joining the Commission and collaborating with Chairman Selig, the leadership team, and the CFTC staff. She stated she’s eager to help the agency continue its work to ensure fair, modern, and efficient derivatives markets.
The new appointment puts an experienced compliance leader in charge of a key division of the agency as it develops rules for the cryptocurrency industry.
