This guide is in progress
The classic Final Fantasy VII is now playable on almost every gaming platform, including consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. A recent update to the Steam version in 2026 made it more consistent with the console experience. If you’re aiming to fully complete the game and earn all achievements on any version, we’ve got you covered.
Like our other Final Fantasy guides, this is a straightforward, bullet-point walkthrough designed for players who want a quick reference without missing any important items or achievements needed for 100% completion.
Final Fantasy VII requires a detailed guide because it’s easy to miss important details and story elements. The game’s complex narrative means players need to pay close attention to avoid overlooking crucial parts.
What this walkthrough will do:
- Offer a minimalist walkthrough so you know what you need to do at any point in the game.
- Point out missable events, treasure chests, and items so you can complete the game 100%.
- Point out the most efficient ways to get all achievements during your playthrough.
What the walkthrough will not do:
- Offer anything more than the most rudimentary introduction strategies for bosses or party build.
- In-depth Dungeon Walkthroughs. Final Fantasy VII is a bit more tricky than earlier entries, so this won’t be as minimal as before.

Author Note
I’m Adam, the writer of this walkthrough. If you have any suggestions for me, or points of clarification needed, the best way to reach me is to email me at adam[at]rpgsite[dot]net. If you have a comment that you think may help out others on this page, feel free to add it to the comments section below, but there’s a chance I may miss it. Thanks!
1. Opening – Reactor #1 Raid
Unlike previous Final Fantasy games, there is no in-game bestiary not an achievement to defeat all monsters. So, don’t worry about encountering them all.
Being on so many platforms, it can be tricky to describe button presses in Final Fantasy VII. Even the PC version uses phrases like [CONFIRM] or [SWITCH] instead of letters or shapes. I will try to stick to the former wording, and you’ll have to know what that means based on the controller you are using.
Some default button positions are also swapped around in various re-releases. For example, fleeing battles is historically L1+R1, but some controllers default to the L1 function defaulting to the Select button instead. So on an Xbox controller, fleeing battle may be Select+RB.
- After the opening scene, grab two Potions from the fallen guard.
- Note: You can press the ‘assist’ option to place arrows on the screen, making it easier to see area exits. This is set to the ‘delete’ key on a keyboard at default, or L3 on a controller (pressing the left stick).
- Complete the first battle (normal attacks are fine), then move to the next screen and talk to your allies.
- After selecting names for Cloud and Barret, continue following through the next few screens until Barret joins your battle party. Random battles start at this point. Put Barret in the back row (Order-> click Barret’s portrait twice)
- Talk to Biggs and then Jessie to open two doors.
- Collect a Phoenix Down in a box to the south after this. Follow Jessie to the elevator
- Continue following Jessie after the elevator. You’ll pick up a Potion on the way. Save at the Save Point.
- Pick up the Restore Materia on the next screen.
- BOSS: Guard Scorpion – Use Bolt and DON’T attack when the tail is up.
- After this you have 10 minutes to flee. This is plenty of time, just remember the timer does not stop in menus. Talk to Jessie and Biggs when able on your run back, and they’ll open doors for you.
Midgar
FF7 has some dialogue choices that affect who you will date at Gold Saucer later in the game, which can be Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, or Barret. In some versions of the game (PS4, Xbox, and 2026 Steam), there is a MISSABLE achievement to date Barret, which is the most difficult option to make. Since there is an achievement tied to it,this guide will assume you are going for the Barret date option and will help you pick the choices to get here. If you don’t care about the achievement, choose whichever other dialogue options instead.
There is an exploit in Cosmo Canyon that can inflate Barret’s affection through a repeated dialogue cycle. While this allows you to raise Barret’s affection as much as you want, some users have reported that using this exploit locks the acheivement. However, some have said using the Cosmo Canyon exploit a few times will still allow the achievement to pop. I’ll mention this again once we get there. For now, just choose the selections outlined in this walkthrough. They will be marked with a [GOLD SAUCER DATE] flag in the text.
By the way, I might say ‘affinity’ or I might say ‘affection’ in the walkthrough when referring to the Gold Saucer date. I mean the same thing and I am using the terms interchangeably.
- Continue following the scenes until you meet Aeris (or Aerith, you decide which name you like better).
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Don’t tell Aeris to flee and buy the flower during the second dialogue choice.
- This does NOT raise affection for Aeris, but gives you a chance to raise affection for Barret later.
- Pick up the Potion in plain sight on the next screen to the south.
- On the next screen, fight the soldiers if you want, it doesn’t matter either way. After a few fights (or not), a scene will take place. The fights are easy, you might as well do them.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: After entering the passenger train car, talk to Jessie for a scene. When given the option, choose the second option “Looking forward to it.” which will actually lose affection points with Tifa. Then talk to Barret.
- Once you leave the train, talk to Barret for a quick scene.
Freedom
- Here you can enter the Train Graveyard to the right. Here you can fight random battles for EXP, Gil, Potions, and rare Ether drops. You can’t explore much of the graveyard yet, however.
Sector 7
- There’s a save point on the first screen, and you can talk to the NPC at top for a quick optional scene with the tower. Otherwise, continue left.
- Talk to Barret and head inside the Seventh Heaven hideout. You’ll get a chance to name Tifa here.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: If you bought the flower from Aeris, give it to Marlene to raise affection with Barret.
- Try to leave and Barret will come in.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: If you talk to Tifa behind the bar and choose to first option “I don’t feel like it” to avoid raising affection with her. After, click the pinball machine to head to the Avalanche meeting.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: When you leave the meeting, Tifa will eventually ask how you could leave her behind. Respond the second option “Sorry…” to avoid raising affection with her, if you want. Barret will give you 1500 Gil after this.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: In the morning, talk to Tifa and she will ask you how you slept. Choose the first option “Barret’s snoring kept me up…” for affection with Barret.
- After, Barret will offer a Materia tutorial if you need it. Leave to Sector 7 Slums after this.
- Stop by the equipment shop to the south and buy three Iron Bangles for your party.
- If you give the kid nearby 10 gil, you can sleep in the upper room on the 3rd floor to heal.
- On the 2nd floor, pick up the All Materia and then the Ether.
- In the Item Shop on the lower left part of town, consider buying a Fire Materia, since you don’t have one. Buy a few Antidotes as well.
- When ready, Save, and then head to the train east of the slums to begin the next reactor bombing mission.
- You can train a bit in the Train Graveyard, if you want.
Reactor #5 Raid
- Talk to Tifa to start a timed sequence on the train.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: If you finish this sequence within the time limit, you’ll gain affection for both Tifa and Barret. Go ahead and do this.
- Train #1 – Talk to the guy on the right for a Phoenix Down
- Train #2 – Talk to the guy on the lower left and choose ‘Yeah’ for a Hi-Potion
- Train #3 – A pickpocket will bump into you and steal a consumable item. Talk to him and choose ‘That’s Right’ to get your item back.
- Train #4 – Just head to the end. Then talk to Barret/Tifa until you leave the train.
- Head north through the tunnel until you see green laser beams. Head through the shaft to the left.
- This area is linear. Pick up the Ether, Potion, Tent, then hit the Save Point, then the next Save Point and continue all the way to the reactor and place the bomb.
- On the runback (no timer this time), head back to the elevator, ride it up, pick up the Ether just outside.
- In the upper left you will perform a timing micro-game to open the door. There’s a boss battle soon, so ready up and save.
- BOSS: Air Buster
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: In the scene after choose “Be Strong” for affection with Barret.
Sector 5 Slums
- Your choices here don’t affect Aeris’ affection, by the way.
- After all the scenes, you’ll be a party with Cloud and Aeris in the back of the church.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE – read carefully]: During this sequence, Aeris will be approached by enemies three times. If you want to gain affection with Aeris, tell her to ‘Hold On’ each time, and push the barrels in the following order: leftmost, topmost, rightmost. If you want to do the Gold Saucer date with any other character, like if you want to date Barret for the achievement, push the barrels in the wrong order. This will lose affection with Aeris.
- Keep following the scenes until you get to the Save Point in the Sector 5 Slums.
- Note: Vice enemies in the Sector 5 Slums can steal your items and equipment, then flee battle. Be very careful fighting around here.
- Continue forward a few more screens to the main area.
- There is an Item Shop and Materia Shop in the center of the Slums, but they don’t sell anything new.
- In the house on the right, read the “Turtle Paradise News No.1”. This is related to a later sidequest, where you have to read six of these flyers for some items. So we are at (1/6).
- Talk to the sleeping boy here. Then select the crate nearby and open the hidden compartment, but do NOT take the 5 Gil. You’ll get a better reward later.
- Buy 3x Titan Bangles from the Equipment Shop in the upper right of the Slums.
- Head to the next screen to Aeris’ house on the right side of the Slums. Pick up the Ether and Cover Materia in plain sight in the garden.
- Head inside the house for a scene with Elmyra and Aeris.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: When Aeris asks if Tifa is Cloud’s girlfriend, saying yes (the second option) loses affection with Aeris’, while saying no (the first option) raises Aeris’ affection. Head upstairs to sleep.
- After waking, WALK, then pick up the Potion & Phoenix Down near the bed, then WALK out of the house, and then make it all the way to the entrance of the Sector 5 Slums. You’ll run back into Aeris.
- Make your way through the screen until a scene at the playground.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Choose the top option “Take her home.” to avoid raising affection with Aeris.
- After the scene with Tifa in the Chocobo cart, head to Wall Market.
Wall Market
Wall Market is a lengthy section where Cloud and Aeris perform various events to prepare for an audience with slumlord Don Corneo. At the end of the event, Corneo will pick Tifa, Aeris, or Cloud to be his date for the night. In the PS4, Xbox, and 2026 Steam versions, there is a MISSABLE achievement for Don to pick Cloud, which requires a bit more work to achieve.
Having Corneo pick Cloud also gives bonus affection to Barret for the Gold Saucer Date, which you know if you’ve been following this walkthourgh, is another missable achievement. So, it is in our best interest to have Corneo pick Cloud, and this section will help you achieve that end result.
- Head to Honey Bee Inn and talk to the NPC to learn that Tifa has been taken to Don Corneo’s mansion.
- Head all the way north to Don Corneo’s mansion. During the scene, Aeris will suggest dressing Cloud as a girl.
- In the weapon shop in Wall Market, found on the E side of the N screen, you can buy Mythril Armlets for your characters
- Note: During this section, some people might want to get as many Key Items as possible for completion purposes, even if they are needed for anything, but this is up to personal preference.
- Dress: In the first screen of Wall Market, go to the dress shop on the left and talk to the owner. Go to the second screen and enter the bar on the left, and talk to the person near the entrance. Make your selections, then head to the dress store to get your dress.
- Clean –> Cotton Dress
- Soft + Shiny –> Satin Dress
- Soft + Shimmers –> Silk Dress [Best option to pick]
- Wig: Save, then head to the Gym in the upper part of Wall Market. Complete the mini-game here, which is pretty straight-forward.
- Lose –> Wig
- Tie –> Dyed Wig
- Winning –> Blonde Wig [Best option to pick]
- Cologne: Head to the Bar again and talk to the person in the restroom in the back. Head to the restaurant in center of the first screen and order any meal. Choose “It was all right.” to get a Pharmacy Coupon. Head to the Item shop (which is actually the entrance above the “Item” sign, not the entrance right next to the Item sign). Pick up the item you want and give it to the person in the bar’s bathroom for your reward.
- Disinfectant -> Cologne
- Deodorant -> Flower Cologne
- Digestive -> Sexy Cologne [Best option to pick]
- Tiara: Head to the Materia Shop north of the Save Point and talk to the shopkeep. Agree to buy something from the Inn’s Vending Machine. Then, head to the Inn at the bottom left of Wall Market. Stay the night (10 gil), and choose your Tiara. (Return to the Materia Shop to get your reward).
- 50 gil = Glass Tiara
- 100 gil = Ruby Tiara
- 200 gil = Diamond Tiara [Best option to pick]
- Underwear: Talk to the NPC at the very south-east of Wall Market for a Member’s Card. Head to Honey Bee Inn and enter inside.
- Upper Left &$#% Room –> Lingerie
- Lower Left Group Room –> Bikini Briefs [Many consider this the better option, however, it doesn’t affect the outcome with Corneo]
- Makeup: Still in the Honeybee Inn, head up to the center room to have makeup put on Cloud. This only happens once and it’s a random chance which bonus is given. However, if you got the Silk Dress, Blonde Wig, Sexy Cologne, and Diamond Tiara already, then this bonus doesn’t matter. Corneo will pick Cloud if you have those four items. The makeup bonus you get will not matter.
- The lowest bonus is a ‘tink’ sound effect.
- The middle bonus is a healing sound effect.
- The best bonus is a ‘wind’ sound effect.
- Head to Don Corneo’s Mansion. Head to the basement through the upper left room and pick up the Ether. After all the scenes, someone will get chosen.
- If Tifa/Aeris are chosen, you’ll be in a separate room. Pick up the Phoenix Down here (if Cloud is chosen, you can get this later). If Cloud is chosen, you’ll be straight in Don’s room.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: During the scene with Corneo, choose the second option “Yes, his name’s Barret” to gain affection with Barret.
- In Don’s Bedroom pick up the Hyper behind the bed. Then go through the scenes until you are in the Sewer.
Sewers
- Before talking to Aeris or Tifa, set up your equipment and Materia.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Whoever you talk to first will get bonus affection. For the purpose of dating Barret later, it is best to pick Tifa.
- BOSS: Aps – Weak to Fire
- Pick up the Steal Materia and continue on
Train Graveyard
- This mini-dungeon is more linear than it appears at first glance.
- Note: You may want to steal a Ghost Hand from a Ghost, at least one. This is a consumable item that drains MP from an enemy, but they are a limited item in the game.
- Note: Be sure to get a few Graviballs as a drop from the Deenglow enemies,. This will be incredibly useful later. I suggest getting three of them.
- Missable Weapon Note: Steal a Striking Staff (weapon for Aeris) off Eligor enemy, found in the second area of Train Graveyard. This is the only place to get this weapon.
- On the first screen, pick up a Hi-Potion in a barrel, Hi-Potion, Echo Screen in a barrel, and a Potion.
- On the second screen, pick up a Potion, an Ether in a barrel, and a Hi-Potion. You’ll have to move two traincars by stepping into the engines on this screen.
- Head back to Sector 7 when you can.
Sector 7
- This section is just random battles and a boss fight with Reno. There’s nothing to pickup and nothing missable. After all the events, you’ll be back in the Sector 5 Slums heading to Aeris’ place. Barret and Tifa will rejoin Cloud shortly.
Sector 6 / Sector 5
- Stop by the playground to pick up Sense Materia. [need verification.]
- Head back to Sector 5 Slums. Head to the once-sleeping kid in the right house and he’ll give you a Turbo Ether if you didn’t steal the 5 Gil earlier.
- Head to Aeris’ house for several scenes.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: During this sequence, Marlene will ask a question. The top option (‘I don’t know’) raises affection with Tifa and loses affection with Aeris. The bottom option (‘Let’s hope so’) raises affection with Aeris and loses affectoin with Tifa. Pick the bottom option (‘Let’s hope so’) if you are aiming to date Barret.
- Then you’ll be tasked to go to Wall Market in order to find a way to the Shinra Building.
- In Wall Market, make sure to pick up the Metal Knuckle for Tifa from the weapon shop.
- In the Wall Market weapon shop, talk to the person on the left and buy Batteries for 100 gil.
- Pick up the Phoenix Down from the upper right room in Don Corneo’s mansion if you couldn’t before (i.e. Cloud was chosen for the date). You can get the Hyper behind the bed, too, if you missed it before.
- Head to the right of the entrance to Don’s mansion, in other words above the weapon shop. You’ll find a wire to climb.
- During the climbing sequence, you’ll have to insert the batteries into three slots on the way up, one of which will give you an Elixir.
Shinra HQ
- At the entrance you’ll be given an option to bust in the front doors or sneak in quietly. The choice ultimately doesn’t matter. Busting in will include more random encounters, sneaking will net you an Elixir. Either way, you’ll end up at the 59th floor eventually.
- Sneaking in requires taking the stairs to the left during a long and somewhat amusing segment. You’ll find the Elixir on the 5th screen
- Busting in will result in a series of battles on the elevator as you make your way up. How many battles and what you fight on the way up is somewhat randomized.
- Either way, make sure to check the Turtle’s Paradise Flyer No.2 on the bulletin on the back of 1F! This is MISSABLE (2/6).
- If you use the stairs to go up, you can then use the elevator to go down and back up without the random encounters on the elevator.
- So, in short, I would suggest taking the stairs (grabbing the Elixir), fighting the forced battle on 59F, taking the elevator down to 1F to grab the Paradise Flyer, then take the elevator to 60F.
- 60F: You have to do a stealth sequence here. Don’t worry if you fail it, you just have to fight a battle and try again.
- 61F: Talk to the guy walking around in the southern section and choose “…” for Keycard 62.
- 62F: Talk to Mayor Domino in the left room. He’ll test you with a password. We want to get a password on the first try for the best reward.
- Go to the upper right room with the green shelves. Check the left side of the middle shelf. The password you need can be determined by what book is here.
- If the book is ‘2 Economic report: Space Dev Program’ –> BEST
- If the book is ‘1 Results of failed space mission “YA-79′” –> KING
- If the book is ‘1 Breakdown of SOLDIER members by class’ –> BOMB
- If the book is ’10 New plans for urban planning’ –> MAKO
- You’ll get Keycard 65 and Elemental Materia
- 63F: Do this in sequence:
- Go to the lower right room and click the computer.
- Open the topmost door from the right side.
- Open the leftmost door from the top (going downward).
- Grab A Coupon from the left room.
- Enter the airduct and leave on the north exit. Grab B Coupon.
- Leave the room, open the door to the left, and enter the next room for C Coupon.
- Enter the air duct and leave through the right exit. Turn in the Coupons for Star Pendant, Four Slots, and All Materia.
- 64F:Examine the vending machine in the upper left of the center room. Bang on it. You’ll get a reward later. You can pick up a Phoenix Down and Ether in the northern locker room.
- 65F: Pick up the Midgar Parts from the chest in the upper left room. Place it in the lower right section of the big model in the center of the room. From here, keep opening chests and placing them into the model. Eventually you’ll get Keycard 66.
- 66F: Go to the restroom in the upper left room and climb up for a scene.
- 67F: Considering stealing Carbon Bangles from the Moth Slashers (robots on spiky wheel) and Hardedge from SOLDIER:3rd. While both items can be bought later, they are great equipment at the moment. Go near Hojo on the left for a scene, then continue on for a Poison Materia and a Save Point.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: In the next room during the scene with Red XIII, choose “Barret, take care of her!” to gain affection with him.
- BOSS: Sample: H0512 – drops Talisman accessory
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: After the boss, you’ll have to form a party. Whoever you choose will gain some affection, so I suggest adding Barret and Red XIII [need verification you can pick him here, else pick Tifa]. Grab the Enemy Skill Materia, which is MISSABLE if you don’t pick it up now. Grab the two Potions to the south. Talk to the NPC for Keycard 68. Follow the NPC and grab two more Potions. Head downstairs to the 66F Elevator and you’ll end up in jail.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: In jail, if you speak to Tifa, chose “Kinda hard.” to lose affection with her.
- You can select “Leave it to me.” as many times as you want to gain affection or “Kinda hard.” as many times as you want to lose affection with Tifa.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: When you approach the door, whoever you choose first will gain affection. Whoever you choose second will gain some affection (unless it is Red XIII, who doesn’t have affection levels). Whoever you choose last will gain nothing. So, choose Barret, then Red XIII, then Aeris.
- From the jail, you’ll effectively follow a linear sequence of scenes for a while. Follow the trail of blood to 70F for a scene, and go out to the balcony to speak with Rufus.
- Later, you’ll be given a chance to remove Tifa and Cloud’s materia. Barret/Aeris/Red are about to fight a boss. Make sure Aeris and Red XIII have magic abiltiies. Head toward the elevator.
- BOSS: Hundred Gunner & Heli Gunner. Weak to Bolt
- Before the next menu, press the Menu button and equip Cloud with Materia. Poison is useful.
- BOSS: Rufus and Dark Nation. Susceptible to Poison
- After the boss, head back inside and down the stairs. Keep proceeding to leave the building and soon enough you’ll get a chance to reset your party.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: After the boss, you’ll have to form a party. Once agian, whoever you choose will gain some affection, so I suggest adding Barret and Red XIII.
- There’s a Bike Minigame here. Just roll with it, there’s no secret to winning.
- BOSS: Motor Ball
World Map
- For now, head straight to Kalm to the East.
Later in the game, you’ll need millions of Gil. By far the easiest way to get Gil is to sell a mastered All Materia, which sells for 1.4 million Gil. Even just selling one can set you for most of your spending needs. The effect of All in your equipment is not affected by its mastery level, and you can always get more All Materias later on. So, I suggest making sure you have All Materia equipped to your active party as much as possible, so we can eventually master and sell them.
Kalm (Nibelheim Flashback)
- Head inside the Inn for a long flashback
- In Nibelheim, you can check Cloud’s house on the right for a scene with his mom.
- Enter Tifa’s house next to Cloud’s. Make sure you go to her Piano and say you “Jammed on it”. This will allow you to get an extra Elemental Materia later in the game.
- Otherwise, there’s nothing else you get pick up or miss during the flashback. Simply follow the scenes and let Sephiroth take care of the battles for you. Eventually, you’ll end up back in Kalm in the present time.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: When Barret says it’s time to get a move on, choose ‘Wait a sec.’ the first option and ;Beautiful, just beautiful!’ for affection with him.
- Barret will give you a PHS which *finally* allows you to switch around your party at will. I suggest making a save here.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Make Sure Barret and Red XIII are in your party. Head to the house to the right of the inn. Talk to the woman here and choose ‘You’re full of it’ for affection with Barret. (Since Tifa and Aeris are out of the party, they are unaffected).
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Head up the stairs and talk with the girl. Choose ‘Yeah, maybe’ for affection with Barret. (Since Tifa and Aeris are out of the party, they are unaffected).
- You can pick up an Ether in the house right of the Inn.
- You can pick up an Ether in the house right of that one.
- You can pick up a Guard Source and a Peacemaker in the next house to the right. Peacemaker is a weapon for an upcoming party member.
- You can pick up yet another Ether in the house on the far right of Kalm.
- Stop by the shops in the North of Kalm. Buy items, Earth Materia, Heal Materia, and new weapons.
- Buy a few Tranquilizers, also. These will come in handy in a little bit.
World Map
The Enemy Skill Materia is basically the Blue Mage of Final Fantasy VII. Any character can equip the materia. In order to learn an Enemy Skill, the character wielding the Enemy Skill must be hit with a learnable attack.
There are actually four Enemy Skill Materia in the game. We only have one so far. This guide will point out every Enemy Skill in the game as we come across them, and I’ll insert and [ENEMY SKILL] flag into the walkthrough. I am working with the assumption that we are only aiming to gain all Enemy Skills on *one* Materia, not all four Enemy Skill Materia. If you want to gain all Enemy Skills on all four Enemy Skill Materia, you’ll have to shuffle around event order a little bit.
In the 2013 Steam version of the game, there is an achievment called Materia Overlord, the rarest achievement, for mastering all Materia in the game. Not only does this mean you need to find at least one of every Materia in the game (including permanently missable ones), but you have to master them all, AND you have to ‘master’ one of the Enemy Skill Materia. This means learning every Enemy Skill on a single materia (not learning all Enemy Skills across different Enemy Skill Materia). Some Enemy Skills are also missable. If you are playing the PS4, Xbox, or 2026 Steam versions of Final Fantasy VII, the Materia Overlord achievement does not exist. Even so, this guide will help in getting every Enemy Skill.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Matra Magic – You can learn Matra Magic onto your Enemy Skill materia from the Custom Sweepers in the area around Midgar. You can also Steal a Atomic Scissors weapon for Barret from the same enemy.
- Note: Prowler enemies can steal items, even equipment, and then flee the battle. Be very careful fighting battles around here.
- Train up a on the world map a fair bit and you should run into Chocobo Ranch to the east.
Chocobo Ranch
- Talk to the Chocobo across the fence, choose ‘Wark’, and you’ll obtain the Choco/Mog Materia. This is your first summon materia.
- Talk to Chocobo Bill in the house for some dialogue about the Midgar Zolom.
- You can rest in the house for 100G to heal up.
- Talk to Chocobo Billy in the barn and buy the Chocobo Lure materia for 2000 Gil.
- Buy 1-2 Mimett Greens from him, which you’ll need in a bit.
World Map
Note that most characters have seven Limit Breaks (upcoming characters Vincent and Cait Sith are the exceptions). There are two Level 1 Limit Breaks (often called 1-1 and 1-2), two Level 2 Limit Breaks (often called 2-1 and 2-2), two Level 3 Limit Breaks (3-1 and 3-2), and a final Level 4 Limit Break.
1.) Characters can learn the next *Level* of Limit Breaks by defeating enemies (for example, learning 2-1).
2.) Characters can learn the 2nd Limit Break within any given Level by using the 1st Limit several times (for example, learning 1-2)
3.) The Level 4 Limit Break for any character is learned by finding a Key Item for that character. However, you need all six prior Limit Breaks before you can use the item. This guide will, of course, point you to these items as they become available.
The best way to learn the next “Level” of Limit Breaks (like 2-1) is to fight random battles with several enemies per group.
The best way to learn the 2nd Limit Break in a level (like 1-2) is to let an enemy hit you and raise your Limit Gauge. Using a Hyper item can help speed this up.
Just keep this in mind for now. If you want to get all achievements, eventually you will need all Limit Breaks for all characters, including Aeris.
- The main goal at the moment is to catch a chocobo in order to cross the sand to get to Mythril Mine. But there are a few small things to take care of first.
- On the world map, note the shadow of the Midgar Zolom in the sand ahead of the Mythril Mine. Bumping into this will start an encounter with Midgar Zolom. Do not do this … just yet.
- We can gain a few Enemy Skills now, however, some are tricky to get. It is very worth getting these, however.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Level 4 Suicide – learned from Mus near Chocobo Ranch.
- This is technically MISSABLE, since the max level is 99..
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Chocobuckle – learned from Chocobo near Chocobo Ranch
- Equip the Chocobo Lure Materia and battle around the Chocobo tracks near the Chocobo Ranch. You need to encounter the Chocobo that comes with Elfadunk enemies. Use a Mimett Green, then L4 Suicide on the Chocobo to force it to use this skill.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Beta – learned from Midgar Zolom
- Beta is quite difficult to obtain at this time, but it is extremely useful to have for upcoming battles and challenges. This guide will assume you learned it on your Enemy Skill Materia. You basically need to fight MIdgar Zolom, have him use Beta, and survive the battle.
- Hopefully you got 2 or 3 Graviballs from the Train Graveyard as I told you to!
- Give Barret a Carbon Bangle, the Talisman Accessory, and use a Tranquilizer to place him in Sadness state. Sadness lowers Limit Break gauge gains but also lowers damage received. Place Elemental linked to Fire in his armor.
- Give another character the Poison Materia. Place all characters in the back row.
- Save, of course. Getting characters Limit Breaks up doesn’t hurt.
- Midgar Zolom starts with 4000 HP. The key thing with Midgar Zolom is to avoid attacking him when he reaches 2000 HP, else he will use Beta, followed by an attack that removes a character from the battle.
- Use 2x Graviball to deal high damage to start, then cast Bio on the Midgar Zolom. Hopefully poison will stick.
- Wait for the poison to knock the Midgar Zolom to about 500 HP, then hit him with a standard attack. If timed well, he will use Beta, you’ll gain the ability, and then Zolom with succumb to poison damage.
- Good luck! It will take a few tries to get the timing right. Beta is an incredibly useful attack ability for much of the game.
- Beta is quite difficult to obtain at this time, but it is extremely useful to have for upcoming battles and challenges. This guide will assume you learned it on your Enemy Skill Materia. You basically need to fight MIdgar Zolom, have him use Beta, and survive the battle.
- When ready, catch a chocobo and enter Mythril Mine.
Mythril Mine
- On the first screen, you can enter a Madouge enemy (they wield a ball-and-chain), and you can steel a Grand Glove, a good weapon for Tifa at this point.
- Head right one screen, then climb the vines to the N for Long Range Materia.
- This is great for Cloud. You can place him in the back row to reduce damage received, but Long Range will keep his normal damage output.
- On this screen, you can grab Ether and Tent from the stone steps on the E side.
- [Enemy Skill]: Flame Thrower – Learned from Ark Dragon on this screen.
- Back on the first screen, grab Mind Source from the S part of the room. Then head out to the W.
- There will be a cutscene here with the Turks. The choice you make here doesn’t matter.
- After the cutscene, head through the door to the N and grab Elixir and Hi-Potion.
- Exit the Mythril Mine after this. You do this by climbing the vine where you met the Turks.
World Map
- On the new section of the world map, head to Fort Condor. You can’t miss it, it’s a huge bird on a mountain.
- Put Barret and Red XIII in your party, for affection purposes.
Fort Condor
Fort Condor is a tower defense minigame inside of Final Fantasy VII. At certain points throughout Final Fantasy VII, Fort Condor will be attacked, and you’ll be able to help stop the attack, gaining a reward each time. While there are a few story-required events, most Fort Condor battles are optional events. You’ll need some gil to place units. The first battle is available now. If you skip a Fort Condor battle, you’ll miss out on rewards.
The easiest way to win every Fort Condor battle is, as soon as the battle starts, to place a unit as far S as possible, then place another unit below the first as far S as possible. Keep doing this until you are as far S as you can go on the battlefield. There is usually an enemy unit in the south-center and one in the south-west part of the battlefield. If it is a Wyvern unit, place Shooters. If it is Beast unit, place Attackers. Otherwise, place Fighters.
The idea is to wipe out the starting enemy units as quickly as possible. As soon as there are zero enemies on the battlefield, you win.
Don’t worry about donating funds to Fort Condor, it’s not needed or useful.
- Tell the person at the entrance “We’ll help you.” This will gain affection with Barret
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Climb up a rope and a ladder, then talk to the NPC with the brimmed hat for a brief explanation.
- Telling him “I guess so.” gives you + relationship points for all characters in your party. So, Barret will get a boost.
- Telling him “All right.” gives you + relationship points for all characters in your party. So, Barret will get another boost.
- Telling him “Not Interested.” loses relationship points for all characters in your party. Don’t do this.
- The ladder on the upper right leads to shops, although they don’t sell anything new.
- The ladder on the far right leads to a Save Point. You can also rest here.
- The ladder on the left leads to the commander. He gives a more thorough explanation of Fort Condor battles.
- The basic strategy is to keep placing units as far S as possible and to kill the first few enemies before reinforcements arrive, ending the battle quickly. See the Note above.
- The reward for the first battle is Magic Comb, a weapon for Red XIII with double AP growth rate.
- This guide will note when future Fort Condor battles are available.
Meeting Yuffie
- Yuffie is an optional character in Final Fantasy VII. She has a chance to show up as a random battle in forests in the world map. While she can be found later in the game with higher chance to appear, this is the first chance to recruit her. This guide assumes you recruit her at this point.
- Yuffie das a 12.5% change appearing as a random battle in the forests in the Junon area. Defeat her for a chance for her to join.
- After beating Yuffie in battle, you’ll see her lying on the ground. Don’t use the save point and don’t open the menu. Basically, do not take your ‘eyes’ off of Yuffie, else she’ll steal some gil and leave. Talk to her and pick the following options.
- “Not interested”
- “Petrified…”
- “Wait a second!”
- “That’s right”
- “Let’s hurry”
- Note: These choices gain affection for Yuffie for the Gold Saucer Date. If you wanted to, you can exploit meeting her by picking some correct options and then failing, then starting over the process of fighting Yuffie again. This allows you to get more affection points with her.
- Yuffie comes with a Throw Materia, also.
- Steal a Boomerang from the Formula enemies, also found in the forest, as a good weapon for Yuffie.
- When ready, head to Junon, which far to the west. There’s a big cannon, so you can’t miss it.
Junon
- There’s an item shop to the N, but it doesn’t sell anything new.
- Note: There is a boss coming up that has to be attacked from Long Range or magic.
- Head down to the beach to the S. There is a cutscene and then Boss: Bottomswell. He drops Power Wrist.
- After the boss fight, you’ll have to do a quick mini-game to revive Priscilla. You cannot outright fail. Depending on which version you are playing, the [SWITCH] button should be Square or maybe LB/L1. Press the button once to inhale, wait to maximum (or near maximum), and then press the button again to exhale.
- After the mini-game, head back to town and head to the house near the entrance to rest for the night. Choose “Let’s rest”. After a scene, Tifa will lead you outside.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #2] – With just Cloud in the party, head back to Fort Condor for a second battle. Complete it the same way as the first one. The reward for clearing your 2nd Fort Condor battle is Peace Ring accessory.
- Get used to this. Several Fort Condor battles have very narrow windows of availability.
- Back to Junon, head to Priscilla’s house at the N part of town. You’ll get Shiva Materia.
- Head to the beach and talk to Priscilla again and she’ll ‘give’ you a whistle to do another mini-game. Note that you do not actually get an inventory item.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #3] – After getting the whistle, head back to Fort Condor again (sigh). You can get 3 Ethers for winning.
- Note: You do no NEED to do Fort Condor battles for achievements. However, you can evntually gain a unique weapon for Yuffie for clearing 7 of these. It’s up to you if you want to do them or not.
- Return to Junon to do the Dolphin minigame. The easiest way to complete the minigame is to NOT MOVE, press the Dolphin jump button once and you’ll miss the beam. Press it a second time and you’ll land on the beam. Head to the left for a scene.
- After the scene, head south, press the box to lower the big elevator, then keep heading S to the building.
- You’ll have to participate in the marching minigame. Don’t worry about doing well here. Honestly, the rewards for doing well are not worth it. The best reward is 5000 gil, which is ultimately nothing.
- After this, follow the sequences until you are doing drill/pose actions in the locker room. Again, just stumble through this. You’ll be using these poses for real in an upcoming minigame a bit later on.
- After this, you can explore the town while still in the Shrina uniform. Remember to press L3 (or whatever your [ASSIST] button is) to get the red arrows on the map to help see the screen exits/entrances.
- The Material Shop is the first door you’ll see. You can newly buy Seal and Revive Materia here.
- The alley holds a weapon shop. You should have everything except Diamond Pin if you’ve followed previous stealing advice.
- The next door is the Item Shop, which newly sells Hi-Potions. Pick up some Tranquilizers if you don’t have any.
- The last door is a house. Talk to the soldier obscured by the stairs. In the next area, pick up your second Enemy Skill Materia. The soldier here offers some tutorial tips.
- Note: As stated earlier, each Enemy Ekill Materia learns abilities independently from each other. This guide assumes you are working to gain all Enemy Skills on your First Enemy Skill Materia.
- On the second floor, pick up Mind Source, and 1/35 Soldier.
- Note: the 1/35 Soldier doesn’t actually do anything, there’s no reward associated with it.
- The third floor holds a Power Source and a Guard Source.
- Once you picked up the items and finished your shopping, head S and through the screens, down the road. You’ll run into another set of doors you can enter.
- The first door has the Turks, who only offer some dialogue.
- The 2nd door has an Inn and a Save Point on the first floor, a Materia Shop on the 2nd floor, and an accessory shop on the 3rd floor. Be sure to at least pick up the Headband.
- The 3rd door has a Speed Source on the first floor and a 1/35 Soldier on the 2nd floor.
- The 4th door has a Weapon Shop, but it doesn’t sell anything new.
- Save and head to the end of the road. You’ll have to do a posing minigame to impress Rufus.
- 0-50 Points: Silver Glasses
- 60-90 Points: HP Plus Materia
- 100+ Points: Force Stealer
- You can eventually buy for Force Stealer & HP Plus Materia, and you could already buy Silver Glasses, so none of these items are missable or limited. I suggest getting the Force Stealer.
- After all the soldiers leave, sneak onto the cargo boat.
Cargo Boat
- Grab Ether from the box to the left
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Talk to the soldier near the blue materia, which is actually Yuffie. Select “Nope” to lose affection with her. She’ll move out of the way later, so you can get that orb.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Talk to the soldier to the left, which is Aeris. Choose ‘I dunno’ to lose affinity with her.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Go up the stairs, then up the wooden ladder to talk to Tifa (in a soldier uniform). Pick ‘I don’t know’ to lose affinity with her.
- Talk to the soldier in white up to the N. You can rest here for 250G, or you can buy Potions and Phoenix Downs.
- You can talk to Red XIII near the save point to the W.
- Go back down and talk to Aeris. She should wonder where Barret is.
- Head back upstairs, head W a screen, and talk to Barrett a few times until an event happens.
- Head back to the deck for a scene. Put together a party.
- Head back downstairs and grab the All Materia that Yuffie was blocking before.
- You can steal Shrina Beta armor from the random Marine enemies here. It isn’t an excellent piece of armor, but this is the only place you can get it.
- Head through the door at the base of the stairs.
- Head up the ladder, then around the U-turn catwalk for Wind Slash weapon for Yuffie.
- Talk to the soldier in red for BOSS: Jenova*BIRTH. It drops White Cape.
- After the scene, Cloud will give a quick summary of what he knows. Then pick up Ifrit Materia before leaving.
- This is technically MISSABLE, so be sure to pick it up/
- You’ll automatically be taken to Costa Del Sol/
Costa Del Sol
- First of all, not that NONE of the character events here actually affect affection.
- Character events only take place the very first time you are here. You don’t actually get anything from these, they are just for fun. Red XIII is kicking a soccer ball. Yuffie is manning the Materia Shop. Barret is in the Inn’s bathroom. You can see a small scene with Johnny in one of the houses, which changes if Tifa is in your party.
- The events available depend on who was (and who was not) in your party when you fought Jenova*BIRTH. Again, these are just for fun.
- As you leave the first screen, a scene will take place with Rufus and Heidegger.
- In the basement of the house connected to the bridge is Fire Ring, Power Source, and Motor Drive weapon for Tifa.
- You can buy Platinum Bangle from a guy in the SW part of the Bar. This has double Materia Growth despite poor armor defense rating.
- Head to the beach to see a scene with Hojo.
- After this, you can leave Costa Del Sol.
World Map
- Head W through the mountains to Mount Corel
Mount Corel
- Talk to the man on the first screen for some dialogue.
- Keep moving through the screens, past the reactor, until you get to wooden train tracks. Continue along the tracks until you see a Save Point. Be sure to save here.
- Move along the tracks, take the lower path, until you see a warning that Cloud is going to fall. Let him fall, DO NOT press [CONFIRM] (may be “A”, Circle, “X” depending on your controller). While falling, HOLD left and tap confirm quickly. If done properly, Cloud can climb up and grab Wizard Staff, a weapon for Aeris.
- Do the same on the upper path, but hold RIGHT instead of left when falling. You’ll grab Star Pendant accessory this way. At the end of the upper path, you’ll gain W Machine Gun, a weapon for Barret.
- There is actually one more ‘falling’ chance to grab either the Wizard Staff or Star Pendant, but if you got them both, you’re good to go. Note that you can buy the Wizard Staff later, so it is not missable.
- Pick up Turbo Ether and Transform Materia on the tracks as you proceed to the E. Take the upper path first.
- Flip the switch in the cabin to change the tracks. You’ll see your party move across them.
- If you move past the cabin and climb the gridded wall, you’ll see some chicks. If you “Take the treasure”, you’ll get 10x Phoenix Down, but have to fight a Cockatolis regular enemy. You can ignore this, but there’s no reason not to take the free Phoenix Downs, really.
- Head back and take the lower path now. Once you cross the now-lowered bridge, take the west path to a room with Tent, Mind Source, and Power Source.
- Continue past a huge rope bridge, and you’ll be in the destroyed town of North Corel.
- Note: I’d highly suggest stealing a fair few “Right arm” items from Bomb enemies, most commonly found on the rope bridge. These are high-damage items that will be useful, especially for the Battle Square in Gold Saucer.
Search Crown / Needle Break enemies in Mount Corel are good random battles to grind Limi Break Levels. Simply use Matra Magic to wipe out most groups easily.
Remember that to learn the 2nd Limit Break within a Level, you need to use the1st Limit Break a set number of times (between 5 and 9). Let enemies damage you while in Fury status to do this more quickly.
North Corel
- Talk to Barret from some dialogue.
- In the tent to the right, you can grab an Ether in the NE pot. You’ll have to squeeze past the woman in the baseball cap to get to it.
- The upper shop in the center of town only sells Potions, Phoenix Downs, and Tents.
- The lower shop sells some status relief items an a Transform Materia. You don’t need another Transform materia, to be frank.
- The shop on the left sells Force Stealer weapon for Cloud, if you didn’t get it from the Rufus minigame.
- You can rest at the NW-most house for 50G.
- [Enemy Skill]: Aqualung – Leave North Corel to the SE. On the world map, head to the Chocobo Tracks E of the desert. Here, in a Chocobo Battle only (use Chocobo Lure Materia), you can run into Harpy (it’s a chimera-like enemy). You can learn Aqualung from it.
- When ready, head to the port in North Corel for a scene about Barret’s past.
- After the scene is over, head to Gold Saucer using the ropeway.
Gold Saucer
- Talk to the lady at the welcome sign. Just buy the one-time pass (3000G). You can get the lifetime Gold Ticket pass more cheaply in a bit.
- At Gold Saucer, some things cost GP instead of Gil. You can GP by playing mini-games in Gold Saucer.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: Head inside and watch a scene with Barret. Afterward, you have a chance to gain or lose affection with only one of the girls (Aeris, Tifa, or Yuffie). I suggest talking to Aeris and choosing ‘Don’t go together’, to lose affection with her. Note that the affection gain/loss only affects the very first person you speak to, and only women.
- Head to Ghost Square (left of the Info Board). Inside the Ghost Hotel, inspect the sign to the far left for Turtle’s Paradise flyer (3/6). The shop on the left here takes gil, but doesn’t sell anything new.
- Head to Wonder Square for a scene with Cait Sith. He automatically joins the party. He comes with a Manipulate Materia and a Transform Materia.
- Manipulate Materia can be used to temporarily take control of *some* enemies. It is extremely useful for gaining some Enemy Skills, and some Enemy Skills actually require Manipulate.
- Head up the stairs to the mini-game room. Here you can pay Gil to play mini-games to earn GP. The Super Dunk game is the easiest way to make GP. If you time it perfectly, you can get 300 GP in a single game.
- PC players should consider using a keyboard macro for perfect timing here.
- If you get 300GP, you can exchange it for the lifetime Gold Ticket this way. If you don’t want to get it this way, your other option is to buy the 30,000 gil lifetime pass from the main entrance.
- Note: Don’t bother with buying the 500GP ??? item. It is a Carob Nut, but you can easily steal these later.
- You can get a one-time Speed Source if you score 10000 points in the G-Bike game.
- In the PS4, Xbox, or 2026 Steam version, there is an additional achievement called Corel’s Angel for earning at least 10,050 points here. This achievement doesn’t exist in the 2013 Steam version.
- Head to Speed Square. You’ll see a quick cutscene with Dio here.
- In the roller coaster mini-game, if you manage to win 5000+ points, you can win the Umbrella weapon for Aeris. This is the only way you can get this weapon, and it is MISSABLE, as it can only be obtained on Disc 1. However, this mini-game is quite challenging to score well on.
- Personally, I don’t think obtaining the Umbrella is worth it. But I’m letting you know that if you want to get all unique items, you can only get this weapon for a limited time. It is not required for any achievements.
- When ready, head to Battle Square to continue the story. After the scenes, you’ll be in Corel Prison.
Corel Prison
- After the initial scenes with Barret, head S in the next area.
- Note: There are random battles here. Bandit Enemies can steal from you, so be careful.
- You can rest in the passenger side of the truck to the south.
- Head to the house near the center-east side for another scene with Barret. You’ll form a party after this.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: If you pick Tifa, Aeris, or Yuffie to go with you, you’ll gain affection for them here. If you are trying to maximize Barret’s chance at the Gold Saucer date, pick Red XIII or Cait Sith.
- Be sure to take the Manipulate Materia off of Cait Sith. This is useful for learning Enemy Skills.
- There is a basic Item Store in the Bar to the SE.
- Head back to the N part of the prison. You’ll notice that the guard is dead and the gate is open. Head north to the next screen here.
- On this screen, head N a bit, and then through an opening in the gate. Head E a screen and you should be in a junkyard with damaged vehicles.
- Note: Be careful, if you go in any other direction, you’ll find yourself lost in the desert. Here, it is best to keep changing screens until you see a chocobo cart, which can take you back to the prison.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Laser – Learned from Death Claws in the Junkyard. Using Manipulate can make this easier.
- Head B, and after a scene, you’ll fight BOSS: Dyne. He drops Silver Armlet.
- After all the scenes, you’ll be back in Gold Saucer, ready to start a Chocobo Race. Be sure to pick up the Ramuh Materia nearby, as it is MISSABLE.
- Wait a bit, and a race announcement will take place. Wait for all the jockeys to leave, then speak to Ester when she appears.
- You get infinite chances to win the Chocobo Race.
- Once you win, more scenes will take place, then you’ll be outside with your new Buggy, which can cross deserts and shallow rivers.
Buggy Exploration
- Note: You still fight random encounters in the buggy.
- Fight a Harpy in the desert around Gold Saucer (while riding the buggy) and learn Aqualung if you haven’t learned it already.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Big Guard – Head all the way south to a beach. Encounter a Beachplug, Manipulate it, and learn Big Guard.
- Drive the buggy into Costa Del Sol (drive in, don’t walk in). Speak to the sailor near the cargo ship to head back to the Junon area.
- In Junon, speak with the sailor in white in the middle of the road to call a heli-taxi. You can take it out of town as a shortcut.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: White Wind – In the Junon / Fort Condor area, Manipulate a Zemzelett enemy and get White Wind Enemy Skill.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #4] – Stop by Fort Condor for your 4th battle. The reward is Megalixir.
- In a cave NE of Junon, across a river, you can meet a sleeping man. He will either mention how many battles you’ve fought, how many times you’ve run away, or a canned line about ‘large materia’. You can change what he references by leaving and re-entering the cave. If your battle count ends in odd numbers (like ’33’ or ’55’), you’ll get Mythril Key Item, which is needed later to get Aeris’ final Limit Break. If your battle count ends in even numbers (like ’22’ or ’44’), you’ll get Bolt Ring, which is just a decent accessory. ’00’ doesn’t get you anything, however. You can only get one Bolt Ring, and you can only hold one Mythril at a time. Be sure to get a Mythril now.
In Junon, there is a screen along the big road path where you’ll see Shinra Soldiers practicing drills in a sewer-like passage (you’ll hear the whistling from the sergeant). Here, you can flip an alarm along the wall near the soldier, which causes enemies to appear in the area. These enemies, Slaloms and Death Machines, give great EXP, Gil, and AP at this point in the game. You can also steal Smoke Bombs from the Slaloms, which are useful for the Gold Saucer Battle Square. I suggest grabbing about 5 of these. Note that Beta is very useful in safely taking out enemies, and you can heal up for only 30G at the Inn two rooms “west” of the soldiers. Keep fighting here as long as you’d like.
Gold Saucer’s Battle Square
- Return to Gold Saucer by entering Junon using the buggy, using the Cargo Ship in Junon, then heading through North Corel (remember, you can head straight to North Corel by going N of Gold Saucer, you don’t need to head through Mount Corel again).
The Battle Square in Gold Saucer is the closest thing Final Fantasy VII has to a coliseum seen in many RPGs. Here, you fight up to eight battles with one of your party members. After each battle, a semi-random handicap will be placed on your character. This can be as minor as a single status effect or as major as all of your materia being broken (for the fight, not permanently). After you clear the 8 battles, you’ll gain Battle Points, or BP, which can be exchanged for prizes.
The 8 battles you fight are semi-randomized. While there are certain battles available for each round of the tourney, there is no set-in-stone pattern of battles. That means what you face is somewhat up to luck of the draw.
You can redeem Battle Points at the kiosks to the S of the registration desks, near the bottom of the screen. However, please note that you will LOSE ALL YOUR BATTLE POINTS if you leave the screen. That means you have to earn your points and redeem what you want in one go, so no saving up for later. Each attempt costs 10GP, so you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of GP before starting (you don’t want to run out of GP before you gain the BP you need).
The number of BP you get is determined by the handicaps you get. However, the way the math works out, the BP bonuses from the handicaps from the penultimate and last rounds of the tourney (so, before the 7th and 8th rounds), dominate the earlier rounds. What this effectively means is that you should worry about handicaps in rounds 1 through 6, just 7 and 8.
The BP rewards available change throughout the course of the game, but so do the battles you’ll be thrown into. If you are planning on getting all achievements, you’ll be spending a fair bit of time here.
A final note – the 2013 Steam version has a Battle Square achievement for attempting the Battle Square once. Other versions of the game do not have this achievement, but there is still plenty to earn here.
- First, read the note above about the Gold Saucer Battle Square.
- Talk to the lady near the entrance of the Battle Square in Gold Saucer, choose “That’s the idea,”, and she will mention she likes fighters who are not all talk.
- The rewards available to start are the following:
- Fury Ring (2560 BP)
- Enemy Lure Materia (5120 BP)
- Pre-Emptive Materia (10240 BP)
- Speed Plus Materia (20480 BP)
- Champion Belt (40960 BP)
- The Enemy Lure Materia, Pre-Emptive Materia, and Speed Plus Materia can *only* be found here. If you are playing the 2013 Steam version, the Materia Overlord achievement requires maximizing all Materia, so you will need these. The Champion Belt is an accessory that adds +30 Strength and +30 Vitality, definitely one of the best in the game.
- While these rewards become less expensive later in the game, the enemies you fight also become more difficult. I honestly suggest just getting at least one of each of these now, just to not worry about it later.
- Some tips for succeeding inthe Battle Square
- Right Arm items (stolen from bombs in Mount Corel) do about ~1500 damage to all enemies. This is very useful.
- You can use Smoke Bombs (stolen from Slaloms in Junon) to flee the last battle but still get the BP for that battle. Sometimes this is easier than trying to defeat the 8th round enemy.
- Stock up on status-relieving items in Ghost Square, especially Antidote, Maiden’s Kiss, and Cornucopia.
- Make sure your combatant has Enemy Skill Materia.
- After winning all 8 battles in a row once, talk to the woman at the Battle Square entrance from earlier, and she’ll give you Sprint Shoes accessory.
- When ready, head S from Gold Saucer in the buggy. Drive over the river, and you’ll see a destroyed town. This is Gongaga Village.
Gongaga
- As soon as you enter, you’ll fight BOSS: Reno & Rude. Make sure to defeat both in quick succession, else they may run away, meaning you won’t get their drops. Reno drops Fairy Tale (weapon for Aeris), and Rude drops X-Potion.
- Note: You’ll want to put Aetis and Tifa in your party, for affection purposes shortly.
- Head NE. Keep going N until you see a ruined reactor and a scene with Tseng and Scarlet.
- After the scene, search the ground near where Scarlet stood in front of the reactor with the [CONFIRM] button. It’s invisible, but you should be able to pick up Titan Materia. It is on the right side of the forked road in front of the reactor, in a dark, shadowed spot.
- Head back to where you fought the Turks near the entrance and take the W path this time.
- On the jungle screen, head N to the ruined town of Gongaga.
- Head to the SE house. If Tifa and/or Aeris are in your party, there is a scene here referring to Zack.
- If Tifa was in the party, she’ll be outside. Ignore her (don’t interact with her) to lose affection with her.
- If Aeris was in the party, similarly, ignore her (don’t interact with her) to lose affection with her.
- The E house is an Item Shop.
- The W house is an Accessory/Materia Shop. You can pick up Mystify Materia and Time Materia here. I suggest buying one of each.
- Climb the pole in the Accessory/Materia Shop to reach the Weapon Shop. You may already have all the weapons sold here.
- NW house in an Inn. Resting here costs 80G. You can also pick up X-Potion in a chest.
- N-most house has a White M-Phone weapon for Cait Sith in a chest.
- Head back to the jungle screen and head W this time, picking up Deathblow Materia on the way.
World Map
- In the buggy, head W of Gongaga, through the forest and across the river.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Frog Song – In these forests, you can learn Frog Song from the “Touch Me” enemies, who look like frogs.
- Note: If you drive the buggy right next to Cosmo Canyon on the world map, it breaks down. If this happens, that means you’ll miss out on a Fort Condor battle. To avoid this, park the buggy a fair bit away from Cosmo Canyon (a few steps away from the map marker is fine, you don’t have to be miles away).
- Before entering Cosmo Canyon, be sure to place Barret in your party.
Many guides will point out that you can gain infinite affection with Barret in Cosmo Canyon. Assuming Barret is in your party, once the party splits, you can then find Barret beyond the weapon shop. Choose “Go on” followed by “Yeah, whatever…” Then exit and re-enter the room. Choose these options as many times as you want. “Go on” raises affection, while “Yeah, whatever…” aborts the conversation.
However, as far as achievement purposes go, many people have reported that using this exploit may prevent the achievement from popping even if Barret is the date. So I suggest just picking the correct dialogue options once, and don’t abuse the exploit. If you’ve been following this guide, Barret should comfortably be in the lead for the date event, anyway.
In any case, you may want to be a backup save at this point, just in case.
Cosmo Canyon
- There is a quick scene at the entrance with Red XIII.
- Enter the Inn just N of the campfire. Here you can read Turtle’s Paradise Flyer #5 (4/6). Don’t worry, you didn’t miss #4. Enter the bedroom here and check the W end for Elixir.
- Outside, you can climb the ladder to the right for an Item Shop.
- Head up the left staircase and speak with Red XIII for a quick scene. Then enter the cave here.
- Right next to the Weapon Shop, on the left side, is Turtle’s Paradise Flyer #4 (5/6).
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE]: If Barret was in your party, he is in the room to the N if you want to gain affection with him. Choose ‘Go on’ followed by ‘And then?’ to raise his affection.
- Continue outside, up the staircase, into the next room.
- The SE door here is the Materia Shop. You have to talk with the shopkeep twice to get to the shop menu. You can newly buy MP Plus Materia and HP Plus Materia here, so make sure you have one of each.
- Exit the Materia Shop and climb the ladder, then enter the nearby house for a scene with Bugenhagen.
- After the scene, climb down the ladder and head into the E room. Here, speak with Cait Sith to form a party with whoever you choose. Then return to Bugenhagen for another lengthy scene.
- Afterwards, head to the campfire at the entrance. Speak with everyone, ending with Red XIII. You’ll form a party with Red XIII and one other character. Make sure one of your characters has the Enemy Skill Materia we’ve been filling up.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #5] – Yep. Now is the time to head all the way back to Fort Condor for the 5th battle. You can only do this if your buggy did not break down. You gain 5 Hi-Potions for doing this (despite the game calling them Potions). Remember to get back to Fort Condor, you have to drive the buggy into Costa Del Sol, then take the cargo ship back to Junon. Once completed, head back to Cosmo Canyon, again, making sure the buggy doesn’t break down.
- Head back up the main path in Cosmo Canyon and talk to Bugenhagen near the big steel door.
- Head down the ladders and ropes until you are at the Cave of the Gi.
Cave of the Gi
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Death -Sentence – Get Death Sentence from Gi Spector or Sneaky Step.
- Head into the third cave on the path and break the rock. Then head north just to the right of that cave entrance. There is a quick scene with Bugenhagen on the way to the next screen.
- On this screen, be sure to WALK on the gooey-looking parts of the floor, else you’ll slide around and take extra damage. Head S from the goo (effectively making a U-Turn from entering this room), grab the Added Effect Materia, then return.
- The Added Effect Materia is MISSABLE, since you can not re-enter this dungeon once it is completed, so be sure to grab this.
- Back in the goo room, head to the NE, then W down the stairs, then S to a chest with Black M-phone weapon for Cait Sith. Then grab the Ether from the chest to the N. Leave to the NW when ready.
- Here you will see five cave entrances in a line. Take the 2nd from the right and fight Stinger event enemy at the web (Frog Song Enemy Skill works well on these guys). Pick up X-Potion after this.
- Return to the five entrances and take 2nd from the left this time. Fight another Stinger, then follow the path to the SW around to a [GOLD SAUCER DATE]:.
- Then head to the far N, fight another Stinger, then grab Turbo Ether to the NW.
- Before heading N, heal up and prepare for a boss by putting Fire-Elemental Materia combination in someone’s armor. Head N to fight BOSS: Gi Nattak. Note that this boss is undead, so it is weak to healing. An X-Potion will kill it outright. It drops Wizer Staff for Aeris.
- After the boss, grab the Gravity Materia and watch all the scenes. Red XIII will rejoin as soon as you try to leave Cosmo Canyon. You’ll also gain Seraph Comb weapon for Red XIII.
- If your buggy broke down, it is automatically fixed after these events.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #6] – Yep. Head all the way back to Fort Condor for battle #6. You get 5x Hi-Potions, again.
World Map
- When ready, head north of Cosmo Canyon to enter what appears to be Nibelheim.
Nibelheim
- Enter the left house and talk to the man in a black cape in the back for Luck Source.
- Enter the next house to the right and talk to a similar black-caped man for Elixir.
- Skips’ Cloud’s house to the right and enter the next house, which is Tifa’s. The man in the back will give Turbo Ether. The man up the stairs will give Platinum Fist weapon for Tifa.
- The very last house has a black robe giving you a Luck Source.
- When ready, head into Shinra Mansion.
- Note: Dorky Face enemies can cause status effects like Confusion, be aware.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: ???? – Learned from Jersey, the floating enemies holding scales. They only use this ability when at full health.
- Head into the room to the right and grab Silver M-phone weapon for Cait Sith, then return to the main hall.
- Head into the room to the N and grab Twin Viper weapon for Yuffie to the NE, then return to the main hall.
- Head up the stairs and to the room on the left. Grab Enemy Launcher weapon for Barret, then return across the main hall to the room on the right side this time. (We’ll come back for the safe later)
- Grab the Magic Source, then examine the stone wall for a secret passage (use the hint arrows if you need help finding it).
- Head all the way down the spiral stairs and through a small corridor into the basement library for a quick scene. Pick up Destruct Materia after.
- Make sure to heal and save, then check out the safe in the 2F W room of the mansion. The combination is Right 36, Left 10, Right 59, Right 97. You have to complete the combination in 20 seconds without going past any individual number in the sequence. You’ll fight BOSS: Lost Number. He drops Cosmo Memory.
- Cosmo Memory is your first Level 4 Limit item. In order to learn it, the character must learn all six other limits first. This one is for Red XIII.
- You’ll also pick up Odin Materia nearby, and Key to the Basement in the safe.
- Head back down to the basement and open the previously locked door. Open the coffin, ask about Sephiroth, open the coffin again, and ask “Who are you?”, then try to leave. Vincent will join as you head out.
- When ready, head N out of Nibelheim to Mount Nibel.
Mount Nibel
- Head through the straightforward path and grab the first chest you see for Rune Blade weapon for Cloud.
- Continue on and, before crossing the rope bridge to the W, climb the mountainous path nearby for Plus Barrette weapon for Red XIII. Then, continue W to the next screen.
- Continue past the bridge until you see five numbered pipes. First, skip the pipes and move south past them, down a ladder. Kick down the second ladder you see, which will act as a backtrack shortcut.
- Note: If you run into a Dragon enemy in this area, consider stealing a Gold Armlet, which is the best armor in the game at this point.
- Slide down pipe #2 and grab Powersoul weapon for Tifa near where you land.
- Climb back up, then slide down pipe #4 for All Materia.
- Exit to the S (ignore the big blue scorpion thing for now). Jump off the ledge and into the next cave.
- In the first cave screen, head N, then snake around S and W until you can grab Elixir. Head N after you get it.
- In the second cave screen, grab Elemental Materia in the little pool of water, then continue on.
- In the third cave screen, grab Sniper CR weapon for Vincent. Continue on.
- Outside, head W and up to the reactor. Make sure your Enemy Skill Materia(s) is equipped.
- Don’t enter the reactor, walk past it, and you’ll be back in the pipe room. Save, make sure your Enemy Skill Materia(s) is equipped. Then fight scorpion-like BOSS: Materia Keeper. It drops Jem Ring.
- [MISSABLE ENEMY SKILL]: Trine – This boss is one of the limited times to learn the skill Trine. Make sure you at least place it on one of your Enemy Skill Materia, if not both. There are a couple more chances to learn this ability later.
- Grab the Counter Attack Materia that appears where the boss was once it is defeated, then leave to the SE.
World Map
- Head W and N to reach Rocket Town.
Rocket Town
- There is a quick scene when you enter.
- The door immediately to your left is the Weapon/Accessory shop, which sells Gold Armlets.
- The door on the right is the Inn, which costs 100G.
- The door to the center N is an Item/Materia Shop. Be sure to grab Barrier Materia and Exit Materia to add to your collection.
- Talk to the old man outside the item shop twice, look at the rocket, and you’ll grab Yoshiyuki sword for Cloud. This is MISSABLE, so be sure to get it now.
- The house on the far right has a Power Source.
- The far NE house has Drill Arm weapon for Barret.
- To continue with the story, head to the backyard of the NE house for your first scene with the Tiny Bronco plane.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #7] – Yep, after the Tiny Bronco scene, head back through Mount Nibel and ALL the way back to Fort Condor for another battle. Your reward this time is Superball weapon for Yuffie, which is a unique item.
- When ready, head to the rocket in Rocket Town, and climb up into it. You’ll meet Cid in a cutscene. Pick whichever options to continue the scene.
- When Cid is done talking, head back to town and into the NE house for a scene with Shera. After a lengthy flashback event, head outside the house for another scene with Rufus. After this, head to the backyard for BOSS: Palmer. He drops Edincoat. After the scene. You’ll end up with the Tiny Bronco, which can cross shallow water & rivers, and land on beaches.
- Cid has also joined the party.
Tiny Bronco Stuff
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #8] -You can do this now. You get three Turbo Ethers.
Bone Village
- Head to Bone village on the southern part of the N-most continent. It looks like a beast skeleton as you approach on the world map.
- Talk to the digging man for some dialogue.
- The sitting man sells Diamond Bangle and Rune Armlet. While Diamond Bangle has higher stats, Rune Armlet has the Double property for materia growth. Buy what you’d like.
- Head up the ladder and into the forest. On the second screen, a Red Materia will be floating around. Nab it for Kujata Materia.
Great Gospel
- Head to the Gold Saucer area on the World Map.
- Note: You can traverse the river that runs through the western continent in the Tiny Bronco.
- Save, then enter the lone house on the world map south of Gold Saucer, E of Gongaga. A scene should automatically take place regarding the Keystone. Talk to the man here and pick the third option about changing the subject. He’ll mention Mythril, which you should have picked up a while ago. He’ll allow you to open the Big Box on the ground floor, or the Small Box on the wall up the ladder. Pick the Small Box (again, found on the wall on the upper floor) to get Great Gospel, which teaches Aeris her final Limit Break. The Big Box gives you a Gold Armlet, which is a waste.
Battle Arena (Round 2)
- There are new rewards at the Battle Arena in Gold Saucer. You can get Omnislash for 51200BP, as well as items you could have gotten earlier in the Enemy Lure Materia, Pre-Emptive Materia, Speed Plus Materia, or Champion Belt. While the items cost less than before, the difficulty of the battles has increased. Be sure to use the strongest character with best equipment/materia, make sure to have a good supply of healing items, Right Arms, Smoke Bombs. Remember that you also need enough GP to be able to do enough rounds to amass the BP. Remember that the BP will go to 0 if you leave the room, so you need to amass it all in one go.
- Omnislash teaches Cloud his final Limit Break.
Now that you have all playable characters, now is a good time to get everyone’s Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Limit Breaks. All modern versions of Final Fantasy VII have achievements for learning each character’s final Limit Break. This requires getting all the previous Limit Breaks. This is especially important for Aeris, so that you can learn Great Gospel for an achievement. I suggest getting this now, as it is ultimately MISSABLE.
The table below shows both the kill requirements and use requirements to gain each character’s learnable Limit Breaks. Note that Vincent only has one Limit Break per level (thus, no ‘use’ requirements), and Cait Sith only has two Limit Breaks.
Note: The table below omits the final Level 4 Limit Break, as that is gained through an item, not battling.
| Character | 1-2 (Uses) | 2-1 (Kills) | 2-2 (Uses) | 3-1 (Kills) | 3-1 (Uses) |
| Cloud | 8 | 120 | 7 | 320 | 6 |
| Barret | 9 | 80 | 8 | 160 | 6 |
| Tifa | 9 | 96 | 7 | 192 | 6 |
| Aeris | 8 | 80 | 6 | 160 | 5 |
| Red XIII | 8 | 72 | 7 | 144 | 6 |
| Yuffie | 8 | 64 | 7 | 128 | 6 |
| Cid | 7 | 60 | 6 | 136 | 5 |
| Vincent | N/A | 40 | N/A | 96 | N/A |
| Cait Sith | N/A | 40 | N/A | N/A | N/A |
- Spend some time to learn Limit Breaks from battling, with the table as a reference. At this point, I will assume you have taught Aeris her Great Gospel final Limit Break, which is the only MISSABLE related to Limit Breaks.
Wutai Sidequest
- Make sure you have Yuffie before doing this event.
- We can do the Wutai sidequest now, however, please note that you will temporarily lose access to all of your Materia. Stock up on healing items like Hi-Potions. You will have to fight a boss without Materia. So, Save, prepare, and head to the long, west-most continent. You’ll find a spot to land around the S part of the continent.
- Head N a bit, and as you approach a rope bridge on the world map, a scene will take place with Yuffie. A battle will take place against Attack Squad. In battle, you’ll probably notice your Materia is missing.
- Note: Depending on how much materia you had, Yuffie may leave you with a few low-ranking ones, like Fire or Ice.
- On the world map, keep heading N until you manage to make your way to Wutai.
Wutai
- Head across the bridges to the W and into the far west building. Talk to the Turks here for a cutscene.
- Afterwards, head back outside and continue into the next screen to the NW.
- On the second screen, you can rest in the house on the right for free. Head here now.
- In the resting room, open a secret door on the W side to find a Magic Shuriken weapon for Yuffie down a small path.
- On the right side of the house is another secret passage that leads to a Hairpin weapon for Red XIII.
- Talk to the man lying down several times until Yuffie appears in a cutscene.
- Return to the first screen of Wutai and head into the NW building here near the Save Point. Pick up MP Absorb Materia from the chest here, which is a MISSABLE item if you don’t open the chest now. Yuffie will immediately steal it, but you’ll get it back later.
- Note that if the NPC is in the way of the chest, that means you didn’t speak with the Turks in the SW building yet.
- Head into the building near Wutai’s entrance and examine the privacy screen to the left. Yuffie will appear and run away.
- Go back to the SW part of Wutai’s first screen and examine the now-wiggling pot. Press [CONFIRM] to hit it a few times, Yuffie will pop out, and Yuffie will be caught.
- After the scenes, follow Yuffie into the basement of her house. In the basement, examine the sign on the SE wall for Turtle’s Paradise Flyer #6 (6/6). That’s all of them!
- Talk to Yuffie for some dialogue. Go to the levers and flip either one. After the cage falls and Yuffie leaves, click the lever again to free your party.
- Outside, examine the sign outside of the SE building to learn about the Turtle’s Paradise flyers. Head inside and speak with the NPC behind the counter to get Power Source, Guard Source, Magic Source, Mind Source, Speed Source, Luck Source, and Megalixir, assuming you found all six flyers.
- Head back to the NW screen of Wutai and ring the huge bell on the left side. Then enter the door that appears nearby.
- When you gain control, grab the two chests with Swift Bolt and Elixir, then head up the stairs for another battle with Attack Squad.
- Continue on, head outside, and talk to Reno for another quick dialogue scene.
- Head back to the Save Point on Wutai’s first screen, save, then head N to a new screen. Talk to Reno once again here.
- Head to Rude, interact with him to get him to move, then head to the next screen. Make your way to Rude a second time (navigate around the big stone head), interact with him, and he’ll enter a cave. In here, pick up Dragoon Lance weapon for Cid.
- Leave the cave and head south for a scene. You’ll fight BOSS: Rapps. He drops a Peace Ring when defeated.
- After the fight and all the scenes (pick whichever option when given the choice), Yuffie will rejoin, and you’ll have all your Materia back. Yuffie randomly places Materia into your weapons/armor slots … but you probably want to reset your Materia setup yourself.
- You may want to wait until after completing the Wutai Pagoda quest before redoing your Materia Slots. The reason being is that Yuffie needs to complete a series of fights, so for now, make sure she has Materia to work with.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Magic Hammer – You can learn Magic Hammer from Razor Weeds, found in the green plains outside. Remember, Manipulate makes learning Enemy Skills easier.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Death Force – You can learn Death Force from Adamantaimai, found on beaches outside.
- You can also steal Adaman Bangles from Adamantaimai, which have high defense ratings, but only two materia slots.
Wutai Pagoda
- You’ll need to defeat a series of enemies using only Yuffie. Equip her with a Jem Ring, Enemy Skill Materia, Poison Materia, and Healing Materia. For a small boost, put Choco-Mog-linked with Elemental into her Weapon materia slots. Make sure to have a supply of Ethers, also.
- Heal up, save, then head to the Pagoda on Wutai’s second screen. Yuffie will have to win a series of fights.
- Gorky: Despite being the first fight, Gorky is a little annoying. He’s weak to wind, so attacks with Choco-Mog attached to your weapon should deal good damage. Drops X-Potion.
- Shake: No weakness to exploit, but basic strategies should be enough to take Shake down. Drops Turbo Ether.
- Checkov: Poison is a useful ailment to use here. Drops Ice Ring.
- Staniv: Basic strategies should work well here. Drops Elixir.
- Godo: Use Enemy Skill Laser to reduce big chunks of his HP. Poison also works. Consider Big Guard if you are taking too much damage.
- Note: This is the last place you can learn the Trine Enemy Skill, if you didn’t learn it from Materia Keeper in Mount Nibel. Drops All Creation, which teaches Yuffie her Level 4 Limit Break.
- If you are the type of person who really wants to get Trin on all four Enemy Skill Materia in the game, then don’t do this event yet. Come back later in Disc 3.
- You’ll also gain Leviathan Materia for completing this quest.
Gold Saucer
- To continue the story, head to Gold Saucer. This time, you’ll have to do a story-relevant Battle Square series of fights with Cloud. While you don’t have to win all the battles, you get a better reward if you do. So, equip Cloud with your best equipment and Materia, and make sure you have a good supply of items.
- Make a Save here, just in case.
- Head to Gold Saucer (through North Corel, as usual). Head to Battle Square and head to Dio’s room on the right-hand side. Examine the object, which is the Keystone, and you’ll see a scene with Dio. Select the top option, and you’ll immediately be placed in the Battle Square.
- After finishing the battle sequence, no matter how you did, you’ll get Keystone. If you managed to win all eight battles, you’ll get Protect Vest accessory and Choco Feather accessory.
- Note: Using the Smoke Bomb in the final round will forfeit the Choco Feather. So, be sure to clear the eight battles properly.
- Attempt to leave Gold Saucer using the ropeway, and you’ll learn that the tram is out of order.
- During the scenes that follow, feel free to choose the second option, and Cloud will recount the story so far.
- [GOLD SAUCER DATE CONCLUSION]: At night, you’ll be visited by Tifa, Aeris, Yuffie, or Barret, depending on who has the highest affection value. If you were following this guide and aiming for achievements, hopefully Barret shows up for the Best Bromance achievement. During this sequence of events, just play along until you have control, chasing Cait Sith. Simply follow him through Battle Square, Speed Square, Wonder Square, and then Chocobo Square. After the scene, you’ll be back in Cloud’s room. Grab an Elixir from the cylindrical closet to the E. Leave for one more scene.
- You form a party, and Aeris is a required member. You can now leave Gold Saucer via the ropeway.
- Note: If you want Umbrella from the roller coaster mini-game, now is basically the last chance to get it.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #9] – You get three Turbo Ethers for winning.
Temple of the Ancients
- This is a one-time-only dungeon, so make sure to get all items here, as they are MISSABLE.
- On the world map, the Temple of the Ancients is located on the South continent. It looks like a pyramid in a forest.
- After the scene at the entrance, head further inside. You can examine the black-robed man at the top of the stairs for a quick optional scene.
- After the scene with Tseng, examine the pedestal to head inside the dungeon.
- Head along the path (ignore the first staircase up), head down the vine, and right to a chest with Trident weapon for Cid.
- Climb the vines to the east, ignore the doorway, climb up more vines, and head to the NW. Grab the Mind Source and leave to the NW.
- Talk to the character here, and you’ll be able to buy items, rest, or save. The chest has a Sniper Rifle weapon for Vincent.
- Head back outside, down the vines, and through the doorway to the S. Grab Turbo Ether, then follow the path to a Rocket Punch weapon for Barret.
- Continue on, climbing a short vine, and then a longer vine to the right, up to a pink Luck Plus Materia. Then follow the path to the NW, down the vines, where the Ancient went.
- In the rolling boulder room, position Cloud in the safe spaces under the rolling objects to make it across the room. Make sure to grab yellow Morph Materia on the way, since it is MISSABLE if you don’t pick it up now. A scene will take place once you reach the end of the path. Afterward, continue on to the “Clock” room.
- You can control the clock with the [CONFIRM] and [MENU] buttons. Here are the rooms worth going into:
- IIII – Princess Guard weapon for Aeris.
- V – Ribbon accessory, which protects against most status effects
- VII – Trumpet Shell weapon for Cait Sith
- VIII – Megalixir
- All other exits lead to a battle or nothing.
- Get knocked off by the seconds hand for Nail Bat weapon for Cloud, plus a forced battle encounter. Leave the room and make your way back to the Clock Room.
- Head to VI in the Clock Room
- In the door puzzle room, head through the left-most door, then the right door on the middle level for Work Glove weapon for Tifa.
- [To complete the door puzzle, you need to run into the Ancient. It’s probably easiest just to run through rooms until you bump into him. Guide TBD]
- After catching the Ancient, the door will unlock. Enter the bottom-right-most cave to get to the unlocked door.
- Here, head right for some scenes. You’ll eventually fight BOSS: Red Dragon. It absorbs Fire-based skills. It drops Dragon Armlet, and you’ll be able to pick up Bahamut Materia. Again, make sure to get this, since it is technically MISSABLE.
- Head right to examine the object for more cutscenes. Choose whichever option from the dialogue choices. Head back to the Clock Room. I suggest saving with the Ancient on the way there.
- In the Clock room, you have no choice but to go to XII. Make sure Aeris doesn’t have anything valuable equipped. Her Materia is returned to you, so don’t worry about losing that.
- BOSS: Demons Gate. Resistant to Earth magic. Drops Gigas Armlet.
- A series of scenes will take place. Eventually, you’ll wake up in Gongaga. Leave the city when you can, watching a few scenes on the way.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #10] – You’ll get 5x X-Potion, despite the text box being blank.
Bone Village
- Head to Bone Village, on the N continent.
- Talk to the sitting man and choose the top option to start digging. We are digging for the Lunar Harp.
- The Lunar Harp will always be to the LEFT of the smoke on the upper part of the dig site, on a slightly darker spot in the ground texture. You can skip placing staff by pressing [SWITCH] and then selecting Done. Press [SWITCH] again to detonate a bomb. Press [SWITCH] a third time while standing at the spot left of the smoke, and the diggers will look for the Lunar Harp.
- The next morning, check the chest and see if the Lunar Harp is there. If not, try again.
- Once you have the Lunar Harp, head into the forest to the North. A scene will take place on the second screen, saying that the forest as awakened. If you haven’t already, on the second screen, grab the Kujata Materia, but you should have done this a while back.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #11] – 5x X-Potion again, despite a blank text box.
- Back in the Sleeping Forest, head N. On the third screen, grab Water Ring, then head through the hollow log to the next screen.
- Note: You can encounter the Boundfat enemy in the forest screen with the tree trunk. You can steal or win Dazers from these enemies. These are actually incredibly useful against one of the superbosses, so be sure to grab several of these. This is a limited item.
- We can duplicate items for free later, so ultimately, you only need one.
- You’ll momentarily appear on the World Map before heading into Forgotten Capital
Forgotten Capital
- Head left at the first intersection, into a house on the left with a Save Point and Magic Source.
- Continue on the path to the N screen, go down the stairs and grab Aurora Armlet.
- Head back to the entrance of Forgotten City and head E this time. The first house on the E side contains Guard Source, while the 2nd house contains an Elixir and your third Enemy Skill Materia behind the upper bed. You need to rest here to proceed with the story.
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #12] – 5x X-Potion again, despite a blank text box.
- -In Forgotten Capital, head N at the front intersection. Keep heading N, then up the spiral ramp when you can to grab Comet Materia. Then head down the translucent blue stairs nearby.
- Save at the Save Point, head down the stairs, and across the stone steps for BOSS: Jenova*LIFE. It’s weak to Earth and absorbs Water. It drops Wizard Bracelet.
- After the boss and several scenes, it’s off to Disc 2.
Disc 2
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #13] – You get 3x Elixir
Forgotten Capital (again)
- In Forgotten Capital, head through a new path to the NE. You’ll see a twisted giant shell.
- To grab the chest to the right, you need to head clockwise around the shell first by heading just to the left of the spike steps. You’ll grab Viper Halberd weapon for Cid.
- Once you grab the Viper Halberd, then you can have Cloud jump up the shell to the top. Enter the cave to the left.
- In the cave, climb up the second ‘crack’, choose Left, then climb up the left-most crack to a chest with Bolt Armlet.
- Head right from the Bolt Armlet to a new crack on the right side, climb down to the chest with Hypnocrown accessory. Then climb up to Megalixir.
- Head left from the Megalixir and follow the path down the long west ladder to Magic Plus Materia. Then climb all the way up the ladder and head right into a cave.
- -Grab the Power Source nearby, then head outside.
World Map
- Simply head around the world map to the W & N to Icicle Inn.
Icicle Inn
- The building to the left sells new weapons.
- The house on the far right has a Glacier Map Key Item on the wall, a Hero Drink, and a Vaccine.
- Head into the Inn to the NE, up the stairs, and grab the X-Potion in the left-hand corner. The Inn costs 200G.
- The NW house has a Turbo Ether, down the stairs.
- To continue on, head outside and talk to the man to the far N. Choose the top option to keep going, then a scene will take place with Elena. It doesn’t matter if you dodge her punch or not.
- Head into the middle house and talk to the kid. Then take his Snowboard.
- When ready, talk to the man at the top of the screen to head into Great Glacier.
Great Glacier
[need explanation here]
- During Snowboarding, head Right at the first intersection, then Left at the second intersection.
- After you land near a lone pine tree, head S. Past a few screens, and you’ll be at a frozen lake. Grab the lone Potion on the ice, then head NW.
- Ice puzzle: From the starting block – N, W, S, W, N, E, N, N, N, W, S, E, N. You’ll get Safety Bit in the cave to the N.
- On the way back: From the starting block – W, S, E, E, S, W, S, E, S, W
- Back at the Frozen Lake, head SW. Head past one straight screen into a tree forest. You can find Mind Source near the N end.
- If you want infinite Elixirs, head W from the Mind Source, past a screen, then NW at the lone bridge, past three more screens, until you see a cave in the snow. You can pick up the Elixir, leave when the ‘Received Elixir’ text is still on the screen, and you can pick up as many as you want this way.
- Return to the Frozen Lake, then head NE a few screens to return to the lone pine tree you started at.
- After you land, head E. After three straight screens, you’ll be at an intersection. Head NE. Go through one screen, and on the 2nd, you should see Added Cut Materia. Be sure to pick it up.
- Back at the 4-way intersection, head NW this time. After a few straight screens, you’ll find a hot spring. Head to the center of the left pool and make sure you select the option to ‘touch’ the hot water. Note, this is a dialogue box selection. Then head NW.
- In the wide snowfield area, use markers to keep track of your direction, because the screen will rotate automatically. Head to the center to a cave with an All Materia. Leave the snowfield to the E. Keep heading on E paths until you see a cave to the NE. Enter here, and the Snow creature here will attack you as long as you touched the Hot Spring earlier. You can steal a Circlet accessory from her, which raises Magic and Spirit by 30. You’ll get Alexander Materia for defeating her.
- Head to the north of the Snowfield when ready. This leads to Mr Holzoff’s house. You’ll appear here when you pass out, too.
Gaea Cliffs
- You have to repeatedly press the [SWITCH] button to stay warm (above 26 degrees).
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Bad Breath – Outside, you can find Malboro, who rarely use Bad Breath. Make sure one of your characters has the Ribbon equipped.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Magic Breath – Inside the caves, you can find Stilva. It can use Magic Breath.
- This is also one more chance to learn Trine, if you haven’t learned it yet.
- On the first screen, simply climb up into the cave.
- In the cave, head N a screen, SW a screen, then follow the path to Javelin weapon for Cid. This is technically MISSABLE, so be sure to pick it up.
- From the Javelin, backtrack a little bit and head through the SE wall to proceed through a hidden passage to a Ribbon, the second you’ve found.
- From the Javelin chest, continue to the W. Follow the path to a boulder. Kick it down. After the mini-event, backtrack several rooms and continue through the now-available path to the NE. You’ll soon be at another cliff-climbing screen.
- At the cliff, go ‘up’ when given the choice at the first intersection. Go ‘right’ at the second intersection. Then make your way to the top.
- In the next cave, grab an Elixir on the right side, then follow the path N to a Save Point. Exit through the available NE exit. Follow the narrow linear path to the next screen.
- In the cave again, you’ll encounter battles with icicle objects. Defeat them to drop the icicles down. Grab the Fire Armlet from the chest on the right, defeat all four icicles (Beta Enemy Skill works well), then grab the chest on the left for Megalixir. Don’t jump down until you grab this.
- Once all icicles are knocked down, leave the room, re-enter, then select to drop down when the prompt appears.
- Back in the starting room, cross the fallen icicle to the left to grab the Speed Source from the left chest. Then take the new path N.
- Grab the Enhance Sword weapon for Cloud, then continue N. At the next cliff-climbing area, keep choosing ‘up’ when given the chance, to reach the next room.
- The next room has a Save Point and a pool that fully heals the party. Consider grinding here for a bit. You can get Dragon Armlets dropped by Blue Dragons in this area.
- When ready, continue on to fight BOSS: Schizo. I strongly suggest stealing Protect Ring from the Right head. The Left head drops Dragon Fang. Considering equipping the Dragon Armlets, Fire Ring, Ice Ring for protection.
- Head back to heal and save, then continue on. Slowly climb the cliff for a scene. Continue on to Whirlwind Maze.
Whirlwind Maze
- Although you already got one from Demons Gate, on the slanted side-scrolling screen heading into the crater, you can steal Gigas Armlet from the Gigas enemies here, which is a limited-time item, since Gigas can only be fought here for a limited time.
- Tifa will join your party here if she isn’t part of it already.
- Continue through a few scenes until you see the Neo Bahamut Materia on the ground, and a Save Point shortly after. There will be a scene a few steps after the Save Point. Continue on.
- Examine the cloaked corpses for Hi-Potion and Ether. Cross the stone bridge when the wind dies down, else you’ll have to fight an encounter with Wind Wing.
- Continue down the switchback path, collecting Kaiser Knuckle weapon for Tifa on the way.
- Continue on, through another whirlwind wall and a cutscene, until you battle BOSS: Jenova*DEATH. It drops Reflect Ring. Having Fire elemental resistance helps in this fight.
- After the scene, you can give the Black Materia to Barret or Red XIII, it doesn’t matter which. Then speak to Tifa to continue.
- On the way north, be sure to pick up MP Turbo Materia and Poison Ring. Dodge the next lighting/wind wall, then head N for a long series of scenes.
Junon
- Eventually, you’ll wake up in control of Tifa in Junon. Talk to Barret to continue the scene.
- As Barret, follow your escort, stopping by the Save Point on the way, to more scenes. You’ll eventually fight an event battle with Attack Squad. After the battle, check the door to the gas chamber to continue the scenes.
- When you regain control of Barret, talk to Cait Sith, then leave the room. Take a right in the hallway and head outside.
- Outside, talk to the reporter for another cutscene, then Yuffie will join. Continue on. Head towards the Highwind.
- Back as Tifa, press the different buttons to grab the key and free yourself. At some points, you’ll have to press two actions simultaneously, such as Head and Legs. Don’t worry, there’s no time limit here. When you are free, press the orange button in the corner to stop the gas, then check the door for more scenes.
- When you regain control of Tifa, climb down and run along the length of the cannon until you encounter a mini-game with Scarlet. After some slaps, run to the end of the cannon when told.
- On the Highwind, run to the cockpit to reunite with everyone. To continue, you need to speak with Red XIII, Barret, Cid, and the pilot.
- After, head to the Operation room and speak with the crewman here to create a party. He can also heal you or save your game.
- Head back to the pilot to take off.
Highwind Exploration
- [FORT CONDOR BATTLE #14] – He’ll mention they’ve been attacked 5 times since you last were here, but that is unavoidable. You’ll get three Elixirs for winning. The shops here have also been upgraded, although they don’t sell anything brand new.
- Go to Tifa’s house in Nibelheim and check the piano for Elemental Materia. This is only available if Cloud ‘jammed on it’ during the flashback sequence much earlier in the game.
- You can go into the backroom of Cosmo Canyon’s item shop (up the ladder right of the campfire) for Elixir, Magic Source, and Full Cure Materia.
- In Rocket Town’s weapon shop, you can pick up Fourth Bracelet armor from a chest. In the Item Shop, you can grab Guard Source.
- On the N continent, there’s a lone house a bit E of Glacier Inn. Stop here and talk to the Green Chocobo for your fourth and final Enemy Skill Materia. The Chocobo Sage can be found here, and he sells some Nuts and Greens.
- Head straight S from Cosmo Canyon until you see a lone desert island. This is Cactus Island, where you can fight Cactuars. Use L4 Suicide, then Morph on them to obtain Tetra Elemental accessory, which absorbs Fire, Ice, Wind, and Earth. I suggest getting three of these useful pieces of equipment.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Goblin Punch – On the islands in the NE part of the world map, you can fight Goblins in the forest. Learn Goblin Punch Enemy Skill from these foes. You can also steal Zeio Nuts from them, used in Chocobo Breeding. You only need one.
- Head to the Chocobo Ranch and head a few steps to the right to grab another Chocobo Lure Materia. Buy a Mimett Greens here.
- When ready, head to Mideel to continue the story.
Mideel
- Head to Mideel, which is the town on the long SE island on the world map.
- Head into the first building you see, which is the Item Shop. Talk to the energetic lady, then her white chocobo chick. Give it a Mimett Greens, then tickle behind his ears for Contain Materia.
- Head to the shop on the far right, which is the Materia Shop. Be sure to talk to the same energetic lady here.
- Head into the Weapon Shop up the stairs. Be sure to talk to the crazy lady once again. If you can afford it, upgrade your weapons and armor.
- Note: Talking to the crazy lady in the Item, Materia, and Weapon Shops will unlock another shop later in the game. So, be sure to talk to her in each of those three shops.
- In the weapon shop, check the door in the back to see that it is locked. Then head outside, across the bridge to the left to the Accessory Shop. Near the man outside, you can pick up “Beat-up Useless Old Key“. Return to the locked door, try to open it, then choose the bottom option to tell the truth. You’ll get Curse Ring.
- Enter the center of town near the dog for a scene to continue the game. This will initiate a long series of events.
- When you gain control of Cid, head to the Operation Room to form a party. You will have to fight a handful of battles with this party, so make sure they are well-equipped. Make sure one character has a Steal Materia, and make sure someone has your Enemy Skill Materia.
- Head back to Mideel and enter the center-west house. Pick up the Elixir. Either response will work after.
North Corel
- Make sure someone in your party has Steal, and also someone has your Enemy Skill Materia. Be sure to Save, then head to North Corel and head to the Mako Reactor. Defeat the Attack Squad at the entrance.
- Note: You may be thinking of entering from Mt. Corel instead, but you’ll actually save time later parking your airship outside North Corel.
- You have ten minutes to do a train sequence. During the train sequence, alternate between Up and [MENU[ to pursue the train. Then fight 5 scripted battles. Be sure to steal Warrior Bangle from the 4th battle, Eagle Gun. Eagle Gun is best defeated with Magic Breath Enemy Skill.
- To stop the train, press Up + [MENU], then Down + [CANCEL], then Down + [CANCEL].
- In North Corel, you’ll gain your first Huge Materia. Head to the center of town for a scene, where you’ll get Ultima Materia, assuming you stopped the train.
- In the morning, head into the left house and talk to the woman in the green hat for Catastrophe, which gives Barret his Level 4 Limit Break.
Fort Condor
- This is the last battle at Fort Condor. The best thing to do here is to let the enemies win the mini-game and get to the top. You’ll fight Grand Horn, who drops Imperial Guard.
- After the fight and the scene, head outside and grab Phoenix Materia. Then talk to the NPC with the brimmed hat at the table for your second Huge Materia.
Mideel
- Save and enter the Clinic in Mideel. Talk to Tifa, and after some scenes, you’ll fight Ultimate Weapon. You cannot win this fight, so stay healed, but be sure to Steal a second Curse Ring from it before it flees.
- As Tifa, simply keep progressing the events until the team is finally reunited.
- Be sure to reset all your equipment and Materia to your liking.
- If you return to Mideel, you’ll find that the town is destroyed. Assuming you talked to her in each shop, the apparently-not-so crazy lady can be found on the left side selling Items, Equipment, and Materia. The Accessory Shop NPC is also around, selling the same items from before.
Airship Exploration
- Make sure you have 129,000 Gil. Selling a Mastered All Materia is the best way to shore up your finances. You’ll need Gil shortly for Chocobo raising, too.
- Bone Village: Search for Good Treasure, then search at the spot on the upper ledge halfway between the smoke and the campfire spot to the right of it. You should get Key to Sector 5. This allows you to re-enter Midgar.
- Head back to Wall Market in Midgar by heading all the way W and then all the way N. Enter the “Item” building and interact with the machine to get Premium Heart, a weapon for Tifa.
- Head N one screen and enter the ‘Machine Gun’ weapon shop. Talk to the man on the left and buy Sneak Glove accessory for 129,000. This raises Steal chance.
- Head to Nibelheim with Tifa in the party and play the piano. Press buttons in this order: CANCEL, SWITCH, MENU, R1+MENU, R1+SWITCH, CANCEL, SWITCH, MENU, R1+CANCEL, CONFIRM, CANCEL, SWITCH, CANCEL, Start. You should get Final Heaven, which teaches Tifa her final Limit Break.
Gold Chocobo Training
- Now is the best time to get a Gold Chocobo. First of all, make sure you have money to burn (sell a mastered All Materia).
- Talk to Chocobo Bill in the house at the Chocobo Ranch and rent out all six stables for a total of 60,000 Gil.
- Buy Reagan Greens from Chocobo Sage in the lone house in the snowy N continent. 6 of them should do.
- Buy Sylkis Greens from Chocobo Sage. You’ll want a lot, I suggest getting 80, if not a full set of 99.
- Steal 3 Carob Nuts from Vlakorados enemies in the grass near Bone Village. They look like dinosaurs.
- Steal a Zeio Nut from Goblins on Goblin Island on the NE island on the World Map.
- Head to the Gold Saucer area and catch two Good Chocobos. Good Chocobos are found in the battles with two Spencer enemies (they look like fish). Note, you will need one Male and one Female, but gender isn’t assigned when you catch the chocobo. Use Reagan Greens on the Chocobos so that they don’t run away. Remember, you find chocobos by equipping the Chocobo Lure Materia and wandering near where chocobo tracks can be seen on the World Map.
- Once you’ve caught your two Good Chocobos, head to the Chocobo Ranch, SAVE, then head inside. You should see your two Chocobos in the pen outside the barn. Talk to Chocobo Billy and choose to Move Chocobos. You will be able to move your Chocobos from the pen to the stable. THIS is the point where a gender is assigned, so, make sure one of your chocobos ends up Male, and that the other ends up Female.
- Catch two Great chocobos from tracks near Mideel. They appear with one Spiral or two Spirals (rolling bug-like enemies). Again, make sure one is Male and one is Female when you move them to the Stable.
- Feed 10x Sylkis Greens to each of the four chocobos.
- Have each chocobo win 2 races at Gold Saucer (I did Short races and automatic, there is no reason to do Long races). Talk to Ester on the left to start the race.
- Save your game. Breed Good Male with Great Female, and Great Male with Good Female. Select Carob Nut when asked which Nut you want to use. You ultimately want to get a Blue Chocobo and Green Chocobo of opposite genders. This may require a few resets to get the color/gender combinations you want. Feed each of them 10x Sylkis Greens.
- Have you new Blue and Green Chocobos win 5 races each. Then fight 3-18 battles to allow the chocobos to breed again. SAVE, then mate the Green and Blue Chocobos, using a Carob Nut, to create a Black Chocobo. It doesn’t matter what gender the Black Chocobo is.
- Catch a Wonderful Chocobo at the tracks near Glacier Inn. The Wonderful Chocobo appears with one or two Jumpings (the hopping bunny things). When you move this chocobo from the pen to the stable, make sure it turns out to be the opposite gender of your Black Chocobo. Feed both your Black Chocobo and Wonderful Chocobo 10x Sylkis Greens.
- Have both the Wonderful Chocobo and Black Chocobo win six races each. Then fight 3-18 battles to allow them to breed.
- Save, then mate the Black Chocobo with the Wonderful Chocobo, using the Zeio Nut, to get the Gold Chocobo. Be sure to choose the Black Chocobo first in the pairing.
The Materia Caves
- There are four hidden caves on the world map that each house a unique item. You want a Gold Chocobo to access these four caves.
- Quadra Magic Materia – On the north tip of the thin continent E of Chocobo Ranch.
- Mime Materia – On the E side of the Wutai Continent
- HP<->MP Materia – N of Mt. Corel
- Knights of the Round Materia – Island on the far NE corner of the World Map, although the island itself doesn’t show up on your map.
Underwater Reactor
- Make your way to Junon’s main street and run down it. A small scene will take place.
- Head to where the Shinra Soldiers are doing drills in between the two main sections of the street, in a screen that looks like a sewer. Follow the soldiers to the elevator for an event battle. Leave the elevator for a second event battle.
- Follow the linear path to a Save Point, followed by a big elevator.
- In the underwater tunnel, use Morph on a Ghost Ship enemy to turn him into a Guide Book. This is needed for a later quest and Materia.
- Follow the linear paths until you reach another Save Point. In the following rooms, you’ll fight more event battles with soldiers. At the end, you’ll fight BOSS: Carry Armor. It drops God’s Hand weapon for Tifa.
- After the Boss, grab Battle Trumpet weapon for Cait Sith to the left, then Scimitar weapon for Cid and Leviathan Scales before boarding the Submarine. These are all MISSABLE, so make sure you pick them up before going up the submarine ramp. You’ll have to battle several event battles with soldiers. Save at the Save Point inside when you can. Enter the bridge for a small scene. It doesn’t matter if you fight them or not.
- You’ll have to do a submarine minigame here. The controls are a little awkward, but fire away at the red submarine, and it should go down quickly. You’ll obtain Shinra Sub afterward.
Submarine Exploration
- You may see Emerald Weapon underwater. Avoid him for now, as he is one of the game’s superbosses. If he is in the way, surface and resubmerge to change his spawn.
- Head SW from Junon to find the Red Sub and grab your 3rd Huge Materia.
- NW of Costa Del Sol, underwater, you can find a small tunnel tucked away in the corner. Here you can find Key to the Ancients. This is just below Forgotten Capital on the world map, and you’ll need this later to progress the story.
- Head to the bay a bit NE of Gold Saucer and submerge. Enter the sunken plane here, the Gelnika.
Underwater Gelnika
- Note: The enemies in random battles here are some of the toughest in the game. Be warned.
- In the first hallway, grab Heaven’s Cloud weapon for Cloud and then Save.
- Head N and across the bridge to Megalixir, then the Escort Guard armor to the SE. A Double Cut Materia can be found in the upper right corner, while the Conformer weapon for Yuffie can be found in the upper left corner.
- Equip your Ribbons, then head left for BOSS: Reno and Rude. Be sure to steal the Tough Ring and Ziedrich from them, respectively.
- After the boss, head into the next room for Megalixir and Spirit Lance weapon for Cid on the upper level. On the lower level, you can grab Hades Materia, Outsider weapon for Vincent, and Highwind item which teaches Cid’s final Limit Break.
Lucrecia Sub-Event
- Place Vincent in your party. Head N and then W of Costa Del Sol to a river. Submerge and head through the tunnel. Surface, land on the grass nearby, and enter the waterfall for a scene.
- Leave the cave, fight ten battles elsewhere, then return with Vincent. You’ll gain Death Penalty weapon for Vincent and Chaos item, which teaches Vincent’s final Limit Break.
Other
- Head to Wutai, and proceed to the flaming cave in the forest/statue area. With the Leviathan Scales, you’ll be able to pick up Oritsuru weapon for Yuffie and Steal As Well Materia.
- Head to Kalm, under the right-most house, and head upstairs. This is the Kalm Traveller, who will ask for Guide Book, Desert Rose, and Earth Harp. Turn in the Guide Book from the Underwater Reactor to gain Underwater Materia. We’ll come back with the Desert Rose and Earth Harp, which require us to defeat Ruby and Emerald Weapons.
Rocket Town
- To proceed with the story, save, place Cid in your party, then head to Rocket Town. Make sure somebody has the Steal Materia equipped.
- Head to the rocket and up the stairs for three easy event battles.
- Climb up the ladder and fight BOSS: Rude. Steal Ziedrich from him.
- Fight one last soldier in the rocket, then enter the cockpit for scenes.
- After the scenes, head right, up the ladder, examine the device, then enter the passcode CONFIRM, SWITCH, CANCEL, CANCEL. You’ll get your 4th Huge Materia. Return to the cockpit, then continue heading S to the escape pods for more scenes.
- Back on the Hinhwind, head to Rocket Town, talk to the man outside the Weapon Shop three times for Venus Gospel weapon for Cid.
Cosmo Canyon
- Meet with Bugenhagen at the top observatory for scenes. Examine the blue Huge Materia, and you’ll get Bahamut ZERO Materia, granted you’ve gotten Bahamut, Neo Bahamut, and all four Huge Materia.
Forgotten Capital
- Head through Bone Village to Forgotten Capital, head left at the intersection to the center of the back room for some scenes with Bugenhagen. Keep following the scenes until you see a scene with Rufus and the Junon canon. Return all the way back to the Highwind after this.
- As you interact with the Highwind, another scene will take place.
- Make sure someone has Steal Materia and that someone has Lightning Materia.
- Wait for Diamond Weapon to reach shore, then run into him to start a boss fight. Steal Rising Sun weapon for Yuffie. He’s weak to Lightning element and immune to physical attacks until he does Diamond Flash.
- After the scenes, fly over Northern Crater for a scene.
- When you are ready, fly over Midgar for another scene.
Midgar Cannon Event
- Make sure you are equipped with Ribbons or Peace Ring.
- Head forward, talk to Cait Sith, then go down the ladder.
- Follow the upper path, grabbing Elixir and Megalixir. Then take the stairs down to the exit.
- Take the long ladder to the left all the way up to Aegis Armlet, then return down the ladder.
- Head right, fall down, then left up the ladder. Follow the path until you see two chests with Elixir and Starlight Phone weapon for Cait Sith.
- Climb down the ladder to the right and follow the path to Max Ray weapon for Barret.
- Return to the Starlight Phone chest and go up the stairs. Save, make sure you have Steal equipped, then continue. You’ll fight BOSS: Reno, Rude, and Elena. Be sure to steal the Tough Ring from Reno, Ziedrich from Rude, and Minerva Band from Elena. Also, be aware that once one Turk falls in battle, the others will flee. So, if you want all the EXP/AP/Gil, defeat them all at the same time.
- Head all the way S through several screens first. Grab Power Source, Guard Source, Mind Source, Magic Source, and W-Item Materia. Then head all the way N past where you fought the Turks.
- At the first intersection (Yuffie may be here), go right. At the second intersection (Cid may be here), go left. You’re back at Shinra HQ!
- Take the LONG flight of stairs to the left once again. On the sixth screen from the bottom (or 4th screen from the top), you can grab Behemoth’s Horn weapon for Red XIII in a white bag on the right side. This is a MISSABLE item. Take an elevator back down to Floor 1.
- Check out Turtle’s Paradise Flyer #2 in the rear corner if you haven’t done so already.
- Head up the stairs to the 2nd floor and into the green door. Grab Master Fist weapon for Tifa and the Pile Banger weapon for Barret.
- Take a glass elevator up to floor 63. You can grab Grow Lance weapon for Cid from one of the rooms here.
- On the 64th floor, check out the vending machine in the upper left corner for Mind Source and Speed Source. In the locker room, check out the last row of lockers for HP Shout weapon for Cait Sith. This is another MISSABLE item.
- Leave the Shinra building. Backtrack to the underground tunnels, and at the FIRST intersection from before, head left. You’ll fight BOSS: Proud Clod. He drops Ragnarok weapon for Cloud.
- Continue on, grab Elixir and Mystile Armor. At the save point, make sure Barret is in your party.
- Note: You can steal 8-inch Cannon from Grosspanzers on the Save Point screen. These are just battle damage items, but they are limited.
- Up the stairs, grab Missing Score weapon for Barret. The chest only appears if Barret is in your party.
- On this screen, you can steal Shinra Alpha armor from SOLDIER: 1st enemies. This is not a great armor, but it is a limited item that cannot be obtained after this.
- At the top of the stairs, you’ll fight BOSS: Hojo. He drops Power Source.
- After all the scenes, you’ll reach the end of Disc 2.
Disc 3 Exploration
- You’ll start at Northern Crater, the final dungeon in the game. However, leave for some optional content.
- Put Red XIII into your party and head to Cosmo Canyon. Speak to Bugenhagen for Limited Moon weapon for Red XIII.
- Head to the library basement in Nibelheim for an optional but important flashback cutscene.
Ancient Forest
- Using your Gold Chocobo, head on top of the cliffs S of Cosmo Canyon to enter Ancient Forest. This is a puzzle dungeon, so follow directions carefully.
- Area 1
- Grab the small jumping insects and place them *close to* the hanging ‘pitcher flowers’ seen to the right. You can only grab one insect at a time.
- Grab the insects, climb the small ledge, and toss them into the flowers one-by-one. This will make the flowers jumpable platforms for a limited time.
- Across the flowers, head down, and slowly grab the Supershot ST weapon for Vincent from the flytrap by walking.
- On the far right of the screen, grab the Spring Gun Clip weapon for Red XIII before moving to the second screen.
- Area 2
- Grab the small insect. Head right under the vine, select to Jump. Throw the insect into the hanging flower, then jump across to the right of the flytrap.
- Grab the frog. Walk a few steps to right, then up the small platform, throw the frog in the left hanging flower, then jump on top of the flower. Wait here for a few seconds, and you’ll be launched to a beehive. Grab the beehive and place it in the flytrap to grab Slash-All Materia.
- Now grab a frog, place it in the right flower, then wait. You’ll launch over to the right.
- Area 3
- Ignore the first insect and grab the one further to the right. Place the two insects into the two hanging plants and jump over to the vine.
- Up in the treetops, head left, up, right, across the vines, and grab Typhoon Materia.
- Walk all the way back to the left and exit to the SW. Pick up Minerva Band. Make your way back to Area 3 and into the treetops.
- Head left, up, right, and this time leave the screen to the S instead of jumping to the right. (Having the area markers helps here).
- Run down the rope and grab the insect. Jump across the hanging flowers to the beehive, and place this in the flytrap.
- Grab the insect, go behind the closed flytrap, and jump across the hanging flower. Grab the other insect and throw it in the hollow tree to reveal a frog.
- Now, you need to throw the frog into the far-right flower. So, grab an insect to close the center flower, then grab the frog and throw it into the far-right flower. You’ll launch to Area 4.
- Area 4
- Grab the Apocalypse weapon for Cloud to the right and the Elixir to NE.
- Leave the dungeon to the N
Chocobo Races
- With a Gold Chocobo, winning races should be no problem at all. We need to participate here to get at least four unique Materia.
- Win 3x C-rank races to unlock B-rank. Win 3x B-rank races to unlock A-rank. Win 3x A-rank races to unlock S-rank.
- .Worthwhile rewards to get
- Sneak Attack Materia (A or S rank, can only be obtained here)
- Enemy Away Materia (A or S ran, can only be obtained here)
- Magic Counter Materia (you can get one of these in Northern Crater)
- Other items you can get are Counter Attack Materia (you already have one), Precious Watch, Cat’s Bell, Chocobracelet, Sprint Shoes.
- If you win 10 S-rank races in a row, Ester will give you Sprint Shoes, Precious Watch, Cat’s Bell, Chocobracelet, Counter Attack Materia.
- In the Wonder Square. Be sure to grab Gil Plus Materia for 1000GP and EXP Plus Materia for 2000GP. Sell your Chocobo Race items for GP if you need it. You can only get one of each.
Northern Crater
- Head down. You can enter the first cave here and climb up if you want to leave the dungeon.
- Grab Save Crystal item, which will let you place a Save Point *once* anywhere in this dungeon.
- Head down the spiral path, collecting Guard Source on the way.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Dragon Force – Dark Dragons on this path can teach the Enemy Skill Dragon Force.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: L5 Death – Parasites on this path can teach the Enemy Skill L5 Death, which requires the Enemy Skill Materia holder to have a level that is a multiple of 5.
- This is technically MISSABLE, since the max level is 99. Get this as soon as you can.
- On the first cliffs screen, head right for Guard Source, then Mind Source, then climb up the left side for Magic Source, Elixir, and Power Source to the far upper-left. Somewhat hidden to the right of the Power Source chest is an HP Absorb Materia. Leave out the bottom.
- On the second cliffs screen, jump off the starting ledge, then head right, fall down, and grab the Mind Source. Head a few steps right of the chest and climb up to the ledge above. Enter the cave to the left for Megalixir. Exit the cave, head left and fall down. Grab the Hero Drink and enter the cave. Grab the Guard Source, then head up and grab the Power Source. Exit the screen to the upper-left.
- Back at the top of the second cliffs screen, fall down to the right twice, enter the cave, proceed out the other end, fall down three times. This is a good place to set your Save Crystal from earlier.
- On the next screen, you’ll have to split your party. While the items you can get vary somewhat, the following is widely suggested:
- Cloud: Left
- Barret: Left
- Tifa: Right
- Red XIII: Left
- Cait Sith: Left
- Yuffie: Left
- Vincent: Left
- Cid: Left
- On the next screen, make the following choices:
- Cloud: Down
- Barret: Up
- Red XII: Up
- Yuffie: Up
- Cait Sith: Down
- Vincent: Down
- Cid: Up
- Give Cloud the Enemy Skill Materia. Head down, grab the chest with Remedy. Then grab the Elixir to the right. Then grab the X-Potion to the SW. Exit SE.
- On the next screen, jump down to the left twice and grab Magic Counter Materia. Pick up the Vaccine and Turbo Ether chests on this screen. Then exit S.
- Grab X-Potion, follow the path, grab Turbo Ether. Jump to the materia and repeatedly mash [CONFIRM] during the jump to get Mega All Materia. Grab Speed Source to the left. Return to where your party split up and head right this time (where Tifa went).
- Run down the spiral, climb down, grab Mystile armor and Elixir.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Roulette– You can learn Roulette from Death Dealers in this area.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Angel Whisper– You can learn Angel Whisper from Pollensalta in this area. You have to use Manipulate Materia.
- [ENEMY SKILL]: Shadow Flare – You can learn Shadow Flare from Dragon Zombie. You cannot Manipulate Dragon Zombie. Note that Shadow Flare is more likely to be used with Dragon Zombie is weak. The Dragon Zombie will also prioritize using it on a paralyzed character, so consider using a Dazers on your Enemy Skill Materia wielder.
- [MISSABLE ENEMY SKILL]: Pandora’s Box – You can learn Pandora’s Box from Dragon Zombie. Note, Dragon Zombie will use this as a final attack, but only the very first Dragon Zombie you battle will do this, meaning this Enemy Skill is MISSABLE. Be sure to have your Enemy Skill Materia(s) equipped when battling one.
- Continue down, grabbing Speed Source nearby, Tetra Elemental to the S, and Megalixir to the N. Exit N and continue until you reach the bottom again. Backtrack to the Up/Down split, and go “up” this time.
- This room has Magic Pots and Movers, which we’ll return to shortly for grinding. Take the lower path to Magic Source, then the upper path to Remedy, then exit.
- On the next screen, take the upper path to Shield Materia found at the top of the screen. Head left from here, through the water, to Imperial Guard. Grab the Vaccine in the chest to the upper-left and Hero Drink in the chest to the right. Exit right.
- Grab the Counter Materia (note, different from Counter Attack Materia) from the glowing center. Grab the W-Magic Materia hidden to the center north. Exit W.
- Once again at the bottom, grab the Luck Source from the chest. Head to the left side to reunite with the rest of your party. Talk to them, and you should get the following items:
- Tifa: Mystile armor
- Cid: Imperial Guard armor
- Barret: Vaccine
- Red XIII: Shield Materia
- Yuffie: Counter Materia
Okay, so we’re officially heading into the endgame now! The game’s gonna ask me if I’m sure I want to continue, and give me one last chance to tweak my team. But before the final push, there’s still some serious leveling up to do and a bunch of incredibly tough superbosses to take down. Time to get to work!
