The writer for the new X-Men movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe says the film is heading in a fresh and exciting direction.
I’ve been a fan of the X-Men for ages, and it’s amazing to think about how it all started with that first movie back in 2000! It really felt like it kicked off the whole wave of superhero films we’re enjoying now. Seeing Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart bring those characters to life was incredible, and I’ve loved following the franchise for over twenty years. It’s so cool that they’re even finding a way to connect with the Avengers universe now through all this multiverse stuff!
Reviving the X-Men franchise is a big challenge for any director. Marvel Studios has chosen Jake Schreier to direct the new film, and Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo—the team behind Thunderbolts—will write the screenplay.
Lee recently talked about his work on X-Men, saying he hadn’t intended to return to Marvel projects. However, he explained that when his close friend Jake asked him to work on X-Men, he couldn’t refuse (according to Men’s Health). Lee also shared how much he loves Marvel, recalling that he used to wake up every Saturday morning as a child to watch the X-Men cartoon and never missed an episode.
He really enjoyed the return of X-Men 97, saying he ‘devoured’ it. He also shared that he has a strong fondness for the original comic book run by Claremont. Lee is particularly enthusiastic about working on the reboot because Schreier wants to prioritize character development.
Lee described the characters as fantastic, with deeply emotional and complex histories. He highlighted the intricate relationships and internal dynamics within the team, acknowledging some dramatic storylines. While the X-Men have always touched on relevant political issues, the team – including Schreier and Calo – is prioritizing character-driven narratives. They’ve been working on the script constantly, dedicating every day to the writing process.
According to writer Mark Russell, these long writing sessions involve Marvel leaders Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito – Feige began his career producing the 2000 film X-Men. Russell says, “We’re all working incredibly hard together, and it’s really energizing.” He adds that everyone involved loves these characters and believes fans will be thrilled. Russell feels lucky to be part of the project, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the best intellectual property around.
Marvel’s X-Men is reportedly set to hit theaters in May of 2028.
