Gladiator II Gets Some Good News on Streaming 2 Years After Flopping in Theaters

It’s finally gaining traction on a popular streaming service, even though the movie wasn’t a big hit in theaters when it was first released.

According to FlixPatrol, Gladiator II is now available on Netflix internationally and has been a huge hit. It quickly climbed into the top ten in over 20 countries and reached number one in eight, including Romania, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic.

Gladiator II’s Baffling Turn at the Box Office — Explained

Ridley Scott, the director of the original Gladiator, returns with a new story written by David Scarpa. This time, the film follows the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius – the gladiator and rebel from the first movie – who faces a similar fate: imprisonment and enslavement by the Roman army, ultimately leading him to fight for freedom.

In addition to Paul Mescal, Gladiator II stars Pedro Pascal as the Roman general Acacius, Denzel Washington as Macrinus—a former Ethiopian who becomes a slave and gladiator trainer—and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Gaeta. Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla from the original Gladiator, having married Acacius after the death of Maximus.

The film has received generally positive reviews, currently holding a 70% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 400 critic reviews. In comparison, Gladiator II has an 80% audience score (“Popcornmeter”) on the same site, calculated from more than 10,000 viewer reviews.

Despite the hype, Gladiator II wasn’t a massive success in theaters. It earned over $462 million, but with a production cost of $210 million, that wasn’t enough to make it truly profitable. Large movies like this typically need to earn two to 2.5 times their cost just to break even, and Gladiator II didn’t quite reach that mark.

What’s Next for the Stars of Gladiator II?

As a big movie fan, I’m really excited to see so many of the Gladiator II cast popping up in other films soon! First up is Pedro Pascal, who’ll be in The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22nd. It sounds like Din Djarin and Grogu are teaming up with a new character, Rotta the Hutt (voiced by Jeremy Allen White), to track down someone in the New Republic. And later this year, I’ll get to see Pascal work with Joseph Quinn again – they’re both in Avengers: Doomsday as part of The Fantastic Four! It’s great to see actors I like in so many different projects.

Denzel Washington will star in a new Netflix heist movie called Here Comes the Flood, arriving later this year. The film also features Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and follows a guard, bank teller, and thief whose lives become entangled in a dangerous situation where trust is uncertain. Washington is also anticipated to join the cast of Black Panther 3, though the film’s official title and release date haven’t been announced yet.

Paul Mescal is set to star in two major musical films in the next few years. He’ll first appear in an unnamed role in 2028. Following that, he will play Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along, an ambitious musical movie directed by Richard Linklater, who has been working on the project for twenty years.

Gladiator II is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
