Hero dog saves family’s lives after stick of dynamite is tossed into yard

In Peru, a dog is receiving widespread praise for averting disaster when she prevented a stick of dynamite from detonating near her household. However, this brave action resulted in her losing the ability to bark.

In response to a suspicious individual, dressed in black and throwing a lit stick of dynamite into the entrance of journalist Carlos Alberto Mesías Zárate’s home in Huaral, the mixed breed cocker spaniel, named Manchis, immediately took action.

The security camera captured an intriguing sight of Manchis charging towards the explosive, seizing it with her mouth, and gnawing on the fuse until it extinguished, much like a cinematic sequence unfolding before our eyes.

“She chewed it and chewed it and saved our lives,” Zárate told NBC News.

This is Manchis. She managed to save herself from a terrible explosion by biting out the lit fuse of a stick of dynamite that was hurled into her house this week, just moments before it exploded. Fortunately, she’s not a specially trained bomb-detecting dog or part of a police K-9 unit, but her quick thinking prevented a disaster.

Dog saves family from explosion

Officials subsequently verified that the device was similar to the dynamite commonly found in landmines. According to Zárate, this suspected explosion might be connected to his journalistic work.

An emergency team specializing in disarming explosives was summoned to handle the situation, and one individual has been detained. Since then, Zárate and his family have asked for police escort due to concerns about their safety. If the explosion had occurred as planned, it would have been devastating because there were 10 people and three other dogs inside the house when it was supposed to go off.

While the family escaped unharmed, Manchis suffered damage to her vocal cords from biting the fuse.

Zárate remarked, “She’s not barking loudly anymore,” pointing out that the once booming watchdog’s bark has turned into a barely audible whisper.

Even though she got injured, Manchis is now widely recognized as a community hero, admired for disarming a potentially catastrophic explosion.

In 2025, this dog wasn’t the only one to gain popularity. Earlier in the year, a touching story emerged about a dog waiting faithfully by its neighbor’s fence each morning. The neighbor was a 94-year-old woman who used to give the dog treats daily, but sadly she passed away. Even after her death, the loyal dog continued the routine.
