Taylor Sheridan Officially Confirms John Dutton’s Yellowstone Replacement in Dutton Ranch

Following the conclusion of Yellowstone in December 2024, the story continues with Dutton Ranch, a new series and spin-off that also serves as a sequel. Dutton Ranch introduces a new character to take on the role previously held by Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, and focuses on the lives of Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser), while expanding on important parts of the original Yellowstone narrative.

After a fire destroys their Montana ranch at the end of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip move to Texas. They purchase the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma and begin building a new life, launching their own business connected to the Dutton Ranch. They quickly encounter challenges and conflicts with the people already living in the area, setting the stage for their new adventures.

Beulah Jackson Replaces John Dutton’s Yellowstone Role In Dutton Ranch

Beth Dutton is searching for a place to process six of her black Angus steers and encounters Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), a powerful local rancher with a reputation as formidable as her father’s. Beulah, much like Beth, is a tough negotiator and offers to slaughter the steers only if she receives a share of the profits, prompting Beth to look for alternative options.

The tension between Beth and Beulah isn’t about their business dealings; it stems from Jackson’s desire to acquire the Edwards Ranch. Owning it would give Jackson greater influence over the region and the illegal activities happening on her 10-Petal Ranch. As Jackson runs her operation, it’s clear that Beulah’s story closely resembles that of John Dutton.

Similar to John Dutton, Beulah lives with her grown children, Rob-Will and Joaquin, on the 10-Petal Ranch. Their family has complicated relationships, echoing the challenges John faced with Beth, Jamie, and Kayce, and adding to Beulah’s own burdens.

Beulah comes from a strong ranching family and is determined to preserve their way of life, much like John Dutton. In fact, the show often films scenes at her ranch that previously took place at the Dutton Ranch, especially those showing the relationships between the workers and family members. This puts Beulah at the heart of the next generation of ranching depicted in Yellowstone.

Why Beulah Jackson Is A More Straightforward Villain Than Kevin Costner

Similar to John, Beulah is prepared to ignore wrongdoing and violence to safeguard her 10-Petal Ranch. However, because Beulah is relatively new to the world of Yellowstone, it’s simpler to view her as a villain. Many people sympathize with John, but his close involvement in the unfolding events makes it difficult to see him as a true antagonist.

Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out where Jackson fits into Beth and Rip’s plans. Will he help them or cause trouble? There’s a scene with Beth and her aunt, Beulah, talking about what it means to leave a lasting impact, and John Dutton – speaking from everything he’s lost with the ranch almost gone – says a legacy only matters if it actually lasts. It really hit me, knowing how close he came to losing everything.

Even if Beth and Beulah become close and start sharing personal details, this closeness might be a tactic used by Dutton to maintain control. Jackson has already investigated Beth, and if Beulah were to delve into the secrets surrounding Dutton or Jamie’s pasts, she could uncover damaging information about Beth.

The finale of Yellowstone featured a crucial turning point. Although Beth has tried to hide her actions, her crimes now represent the greatest danger to her and Rip’s life at the Dutton Ranch. It remains to be seen if Beulah will target her rivals, or if they’ll band together because of what they’ve all been through.
