In the vast, unyielding expanse of the blockchain, where every transaction is etched in stone, the modern-day outlaws find themselves in a bind tighter than a hangman’s noose. Binance Research, with a wink and a nod, reveals that over $75 billion in ill-gotten crypto is trapped, visible, and traceable-a digital Alcatraz for the digitally damned.
Less than 1% of all transactions are tainted by these scoundrels, yet their hoards grow heavier, stuck like a bone in the throat of the blockchain. Since 2016, their plight has worsened, with a 28% increase in trapped funds by 2025. “The bottleneck is structural,” Binance quips, “and it’s a real doozy for the bad eggs.”
The tools of their trade-KYT, KYC, stablecoin freezes, and the long arm of the law-have turned the blockchain into a hall of mirrors for these criminals. Every move they make is watched, recorded, and remembered. “The ledger never forgets,” the research team muses, “not even when the money hops from wallet to wallet like a flea on a hot griddle.”
Over 80% of these illicit funds have fled their original wallets, but to no avail. The blockchain follows them like a shadow, relentless and unshakable. Privacy tools, once the darling of the underworld, are now as useful as a screen door on a submarine. “Stolen a billion? Good luck laundering it-it’ll take you over 100 days, and that’s if you’re lucky,” the report chuckles.
Chainalysis, back in October 2025, sang the same tune, noting that $75 billion in crypto was tied to criminal activity, with Bitcoin leading the charge. But the times are changing, and stablecoins and Ether are muscling in on the action. Meanwhile, Binance, ever the vigilant sheriff, deploys over 100 AI models to thwart AI-powered scams, intercepting 22.9 million attempts in Q1 2026 alone.
So, to the crypto criminals out there, take heed: the blockchain is no place for your shenanigans. Your funds are stuck, your moves are tracked, and the law is always one step ahead. As the saying goes, “You can run, but you can’t hide-especially not on the blockchain.”
