Predicting Reacher Season 5’s Story: 5 Books The Prime Video Series Could Adapt

As a huge action fan, I’ve been really impressed with how quickly Reacher has become one of Prime Video‘s biggest hits. Honestly, the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher movie never quite worked for me – Cruise just didn’t feel like the imposing, physically powerful character Lee Child created. But Alan Ritchson? He’s perfect! Even Lee Child himself has said he prefers the TV show, and I totally get why. Beyond the casting, which was a smart move, the show also brilliantly tackled a tough challenge: giving Reacher more dialogue. The character in the books is famously a man of few words, but Ritchson’s version has enough to say without losing that core stoicism. It’s a really satisfying adaptation.

The Reacher TV show stays pretty true to the original books, which is great news for fans and means there’s plenty of material for future seasons. Unlike shows like The Night Agent that eventually ran out of books to adapt, there are currently 30 Jack Reacher novels and a collection of short stories available. With Lee Child’s brother, Andrew Child, now continuing the book series, the show could potentially keep going as long as the books are written. However, the showrunners should focus on adapting those existing novels first.

Tripwire

As a huge fan of the Reacher series, I’ve noticed that every time a new season is confirmed, everyone immediately starts guessing which book they’ll tackle next! It’s been a bit unusual how they’ve chosen the books, not going in order. But it makes sense when you think about it – a lot of the Jack Reacher novels work perfectly well as standalone stories. Some dive deeper into his past, so the writers have the flexibility to pick and choose, and they’ve clearly been listening to what fans want!

Many fans hope the next season of Reacher will adapt Tripwire, the third book in the series. It’s often considered one of the strongest installments. Unlike previous stories, Tripwire takes Reacher to Key West, Florida, offering a fresh setting for the typically nomadic character. The story finds Reacher, now holding down two jobs, investigating a murder that brings him face-to-face with a particularly memorable villain: Victor Truman, nicknamed “Hook” Hobie.

The Reacher series book adaptations
Season Book
1 Killing Floor
2 Bad Luck and Trouble
3 Persuader
4 Gone Tomorrow

Turning the novel Tripwire into an episode could be a big hit, as the book has a large and dedicated fanbase. The villain, a uniquely damaged businessman and criminal, is truly frightening, and it would be great to see an actor portray him. The story also includes a famously over-the-top moment – the idea that Reacher’s chest muscles could actually stop a bullet. While the show isn’t usually a comedy, it’s willing to embrace those kinds of absurd scenes, and this one would be really entertaining to watch.

The Visitor/Running Blind

Many action thrillers featuring male leads handle sexual assault poorly, often showing unrealistic reactions from female characters and downplaying the serious consequences of these crimes. The show The Visitor (also known as Running Blind in the US) focuses on the murders of former female soldiers who were harassed during their time in the Army. When Jack Reacher becomes a suspect, he’s quickly cleared and then reluctantly drawn into the investigation.

Turning this story into an episode would let the show realistically depict how difficult it is for women to be taken seriously after experiencing crime, without sacrificing the exciting action Prime Video viewers expect. Even small details could powerfully address this widespread problem, and featuring it in such a popular series would be impactful. Plus, this particular story is one of the strongest in the book series, and the New York setting adds a unique and compelling backdrop.

This book features a significant plot twist and some very unsettling scenes, offering a real chance for the Reacher TV series to create some of its most compelling episodes. Without giving away any spoilers, a potential death scene involving hypnosis could be particularly shocking and different from anything viewers have seen on the show so far.

Worth Dying For

Jack Reacher’s nomadic lifestyle is a key element of the series, letting each season unfold in a new and distinct location with its own unique mood. The next installment could take him to his most unsettling setting yet, embracing the creepy vibe of small-town horror. Shows like Mindhunter and Sharp Objects excel at creating this atmosphere, but it’s uncommon to see it combined with the action and thrills of a show like Reacher.

The show Reacher excels at blending thrilling action with building suspense. While the main character is still physically powerful, the series also features clever plotting that establishes the villains and their confidence before Reacher intervenes. This makes the story Worth Dying For a perfect fit for season five, offering ample opportunity to showcase the villainous Duncan family and their motivations before the story reaches its climax.

In Worth Dying For, Jack Reacher finds himself stuck in a small Nebraska town dominated by the powerful Duncan family. He’s physically worn down throughout the story, creating suspense about how much of his usual strength he has left, but there’s still plenty of intense action. While this book is one of the darkest in the series—it centers around a disturbing human trafficking scheme—the villains are so awful that seeing Reacher take them down promises to be a particularly satisfying moment for readers.

Die Trying

In the second Jack Reacher novel, Die Trying, Reacher finds himself in an unusual situation: he’s kidnapped. This is surprising considering how the books and the TV series consistently portray Reacher as incredibly strong and intimidating – someone most villains wouldn’t dare challenge, as seen from the very beginning of the show. After watching three seasons of Reacher easily overpower his opponents, a kidnapping plot would be a shocking and compelling way to start a new season.

What sets this series apart is its strong, capable female character. Unlike many action shows, Holly doesn’t constantly need rescuing. Though she and Reacher share a brief romantic moment, the story could easily remove that element and still showcase a compelling female lead who isn’t defined by a love interest.

While filming Die Trying might be tricky due to many scenes happening in small spaces, this could actually create a unique and engaging visual style. Alan Ritchson considers this Jack Reacher novel his personal favorite, making a screen adaptation highly probable, especially given how well he portrays the character. However, it’s also possible this novel could serve as Ritchson’s final appearance as Jack Reacher, should he ever decide to step down from the role – though that doesn’t seem likely right now.

Personal

The show Reacher has been incredibly popular, so Prime Video has already renewed it for season 5 – even before season 4 comes out! This success opens up exciting possibilities for the future, and the creators are considering moving the show to a new international location. Adapting the book Personal would be a perfect fit for this expanded setting.

The latest storyline follows Reacher as he hunts a sniper who tried to kill the President of France, leading him to Paris and London. Although the show is mostly filmed in Canada, each season is set in a different part of the United States. Adapting the novel Personal would be a significant shift for the Reacher series, potentially requiring a larger budget and drawing in an even wider international audience.

Beyond offering a fresh setting, the novel Personal offers a deeper look into Jack Reacher’s emotional state. The book highlights his ongoing grief over Dominique Kohl’s death, something the third season of the show didn’t fully explore – particularly given the book portrays her death as more traumatic. Revisiting and clarifying the impact of this loss on Reacher would be beneficial, and Personal provides an ideal opportunity to both develop his character and enrich the show’s narrative.
