• Dong Nguyen denies any connection to the Flappy Bird re-release or crypto involvement.
  • The updated version may have crypto components, although Nguyen has denied its support.

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in tech and gaming industries, I find myself intrigued by the enigma surrounding the alleged re-release of Flappy Bird, particularly its potential connection to cryptocurrencies. The denial by Dong Nguyen, the original creator, is understandable given his past experiences and concerns about the game’s addictive nature.

Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird, has openly dismissed any connection to a group aiming to reintroduce the popular mobile game. Moreover, he declared his disapproval towards cryptocurrencies. On X (previously Twitter) on September 15, Nguyen clarified that he neither sold the game nor any related assets to emphasize his stance.

Two days after the Flappy Bird Foundation unveiled their plans to reintroduce the game, this answer was given. The foundation claimed they had acquired the rights to Flappy Bird from Gametech Holdings LLC, a company that challenged Nguyen’s trademark application last year but was later granted the rights to the game in January.

Rumors of Crypto Integration in New Release

Varun Biniwale discovered a concealed webpage from the team, hinting at potential Bitcoin integration within the upcoming version of Flappy Bird. The page indicated that future games could leverage blockchain technologies like Solana and offer a “play-to-earn” mechanism, where players would receive Bitcoin rewards for their gameplay.

Though Nguyen has stepped away from the revamped game, clues suggest it might incorporate elements of cryptocurrency. Varun Biniwale found traces of a “$FLAP token” on Solana, suggesting the reintroduced game could employ “play-to-earn” and “stake-to-own” structures. Additionally, a deleted page suggested potential airdrops and connections to the TON Blockchain.

Nguyen, the one who took Flappy Bird off app stores in 2014 due to its skyrocketing popularity and addictive qualities, made it clear that he has no connection to the game’s recent comeback and does not endorse any cryptocurrency-related projects. The sudden return of the game, along with rumors of potential blockchain ties, has ignited curiosity about the reasons behind its resurgence.

It appears that the project is being overseen by Michael Roberts from 1208 Production, although he hasn’t responded to requests for a comment. Despite this, Nguyen maintains his distance from the project, clearly stating that he holds no participation or endorsement for any cryptocurrency initiatives.

Due to Nguyen’s fierce critique and apprehensions about the authenticity of the upcoming launch, it’s unclear if Flappy Bird will indeed make a comeback.
