Julie Potentially Time Traveling To Find Tabitha & Jade’s Past Reincarnations Addressed By From Star

Be warned: This article contains spoilers for From season 4, episode 4, “Of Myths and Monsters.” The article discusses a major time travel theory brought up by Hannah Cheramy in the show.

In season 3, episode 8 of From, Julie Matthews discovers she has the ability to travel through time within the town’s past – a power Ethan later calls “storywalking.” While it’s established she can’t alter events that have already occurred, after her father, Jim Matthews, dies, she spends much of season 4 attempting to go back and save him.

Cheramy discussed her hopes for Julie’s character in the fifth and final season of From during an interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant. She expressed a desire to further explore Julie’s ‘storywalking’ and see her journey involve discovering previous lives of both her mother, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno), and Jade Herrera (David Alpay). Here’s what she said:

I really hope Julie continues using her ability to explore past lives. That’s my biggest wish for her. I think she should revisit times when people like Christopher or Miranda were alive – or any of her past selves – to find answers that can help others. Tabitha and Jade are struggling to understand their reincarnations, and Julie could potentially talk to those past versions of themselves to learn what they knew and why they died – perhaps if they knew too much? She could then share that information with Tabitha, Jade, and others like Boyd, helping them make sense of everything. Julie isn’t meant to be leading the charge, but she has incredible potential to support and assist people in figuring things out.

By season 4, episode 4, Julie’s main goal with storywalking is simply to understand how it works and if she can use it to rescue her father. Cheramy, however, believes this ability could be used for something bigger: learning from the past lives of Tabitha and Jade – including those of Miranda (Sarah Booth) and Christopher (Thom Payne) – and applying those lessons to help the characters in the present day.

Okay, so Julie’s journey is about to get a lot more complicated. She’s been understandably wrapped up in her own pain, but to truly grow, she needs to understand the bigger picture of what her abilities mean. And honestly, the show is holding back a huge piece of the puzzle – she still doesn’t know about her mother and Jade’s history of past lives in this town! It’s creating some fascinating dramatic tension. Right now, it feels like Ethan and Randall Kirkland are the only ones in the know about Julie’s unique ability to ‘storywalk,’ and Tabitha and Jade are completely in the dark. That’s a recipe for some serious reveals, and I’m eager to see how it all unfolds.

A common criticism of the show From is that many characters are keeping important secrets. While Julie, Tabitha, and Jade have shared their big secrets with a few people, the overall lack of openness continues to be a problem. With six episodes left in this season and another season planned, there’s still a chance to address this. However, time is quickly running out as the Man in Yellow, disguised as Julie’s mother Sophia, is manipulating the residents and driving them to conflict.

When Jim dies, the Man in Yellow clearly knows about Julie’s time-traveling and what she’s trying to accomplish. After Julie’s most recent trip into the past, she finally sees the Man in Yellow as he truly is – she witnesses him eating from a bloody body. He also sees her before Randall manages to pull her back to the present.

It looks like Julie is heading for a confrontation with the Man in Yellow, possibly through connections to Tabitha and Jade’s past lives. Combined with her special abilities, she might be the most crucial person in the final events of From, potentially even more important than Tabitha, Jade, or Boyd Stevens.

From releases new episodes on Sundays on MGM+.
