Typically, free-to-play games are smaller, independent titles or older releases. But for a short time, players can experience a brand-new, highly anticipated RPG from 2026 completely free of charge.
Released in March 2026, GreedFall: The Dying World offered players a rich, open-world experience with a complex story and engaging combat. While the RPG wasn’t perfect, it sparked discussion and gave players a reason to try it beyond just finding a free game to play.
GreedFall The Dying World is Free to Play on Steam All Weekend
Developed by Spiders and published by Nacon, GreedFall: The Dying World is the newest game in the GreedFall series, which started in 2019. Taking place in a world inspired by 17th-century Europe, The Dying World lets RPG players create a unique character and embark on a grand adventure where their decisions truly impact the story and world around them.
Normally, GreedFall: The Dying World costs $49.99. However, you can play the RPG for free right now until May 17th. If you enjoy it and want to keep it, The Dying World is also on sale for $34.99 until May 27th.
In GreedFall: The Dying World, you’re invited to Write Your Own Legend. This story-focused RPG takes you to a sprawling fantasy world reminiscent of 17th-century Europe. You’ll create a unique character, customizing everything from their appearance to their skills, and then embark on an epic adventure, forging alliances with companions who will help you face the challenges ahead.
The game reacts to everything you do. Your choices shape the story, alliances matter, and decisions can determine the world’s fate. You won’t just rely on strength to succeed. You can also use diplomacy, create your own gear, discover secret treasures, and use cleverness and disguises to reach restricted areas.
Despite the promising description of GreedFall: The Dying World, player reactions have been somewhat lukewarm. With almost 1,000 reviews on Steam, the game currently has a “Mixed” rating, and a look at those reviews confirms this is an accurate assessment.
One player said they were a big fan of the first game and started playing this one immediately upon release. They found the story and characters more captivating, and the voice acting superior to the original. However, they thought the difficulty was too high at first, so they lowered it to the easiest setting to progress more quickly. They were happy with the game’s many accessibility features.
One user strongly advised against buying the game, explaining that the original development team was let go due to the publisher’s poor financial decisions. Now, only the publisher is profiting from the game.
Compared to the first game, GreedFall: The Dying World didn’t quite live up to expectations, and it was made under difficult circumstances for the development team. It’s not surprising it received criticism. However, this weekend offers fans a chance to enjoy the new game without feeling bad about supporting it.
PC gamers have a limited time to try the RPG GreedFall: The Dying World for free, even though it’s been a bit controversial.
