The aftermath of JJ’s shocking death is revealed in an Outer Banks season 5 teaser.
In a shocking turn of events, JJ Maybank (played by Rudy Pankow) died in the final episode of Outer Banks season 4. Fans were especially surprised because JJ was one of the show’s original characters. With the last episodes of season 4 released on November 7, 2024, viewers have been waiting over a year for the next installment. Season 5 has been confirmed as the show’s final season and is scheduled to premiere in 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been revealed.
At Netflix’s presentation for advertisers in 2026, a short preview of Outer Banks season 5 was revealed. The teaser shows the main characters, the Pogues, being held by authorities – apparently at a hearing in Croatia, judging by the flag and uniforms. Actress Madelyn Cline also appeared on stage to discuss how the loss of JJ impacts the new season and what it was like to say goodbye to the show. You can find her remarks below.
This season picks up right after last season’s dramatic ending, and we really dive into the aftermath for all the characters. Expect a lot of tension and challenges for their relationships, as always. Our goal was to give the series a satisfying conclusion that fans will enjoy.
I’m feeling a mix of sadness and gratitude. I’ve become really close to all of you, and you’ve truly become my best friends. It’s going to be really strange and difficult not working together anymore.
The new season of Outer Banks finds the Pogues in Croatia, a shift from their previous destination of Lisbon, Portugal. They’re still searching for Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), who is connected to JJ’s death. While Croatia is a made-up location within the show’s story, the city of Dubrovnik was actually used as a filming location for season 5.
Cline was joined by Carlacia Grant and Chase Stokes, stars of the show Outer Banks. Grant explained that she loves how viewers connect with the characters and their friendships, saying, “It’s really special to see people relate to us and how our bond strengthens theirs.” Stokes finished by thanking the audience for their support over the past six years, saying, “We’re incredibly grateful for everything you’ve given us.”
The show starts in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where a group of friends, known as the Pogues, begin investigating the disappearance of John B.’s father. This quickly leads them on a treasure hunt, and the story has since taken them all over the world. A recent preview suggests the final season will continue this global adventure, with scenes filmed in Croatia.
Reviews for Outer Banks have generally been very positive, earning a 79% rating from critics and a 67% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has also been a huge success for Netflix, with subscribers watching 1.4 billion minutes of the second part of season 4 during its first week. As this is the final season, viewership is expected to remain strong.
The television series Outer Banks was developed by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke. Alongside stars Chase Pankow, Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Grant, Jonathan Stokes, and Charles Esten, the show also features Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Austin North, Drew Starkey, and Cullen Moss.
