In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos eliminates half of all life, establishing himself as an incredibly powerful villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite his immense strength, several heroes could defeat him if they were fighting at their peak. In fact, the MCU has since introduced two characters who are even more powerful than Thanos.
If Doctor Doom lives up to his comic book potential in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, he could become even more powerful than Thanos. In the 2015 Secret Wars comic series, Doctor Doom actually killed Thanos after creating his own world when the Marvel Universe was destroyed. If he repeats that feat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’ll surpass Thanos as the biggest threat.
Even though we don’t know the full extent of Doctor Doom’s abilities yet, at least five characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are more powerful than Thanos. In Avengers: Infinity War, one of these powerful beings was intentionally kept out of the fight, while another had their powers significantly reduced to prevent a confrontation. The remaining three were either still developing their skills, hadn’t appeared in the MCU yet, or, in one instance, hadn’t even been born!
5. Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel wasn’t in Avengers: Infinity War because she possessed the power to potentially defeat Thanos and prevent half of all life from disappearing. Unlike Thor, who relies on his feelings in battle, Captain Marvel is a highly trained Kree soldier. She’s disciplined enough to make the difficult decisions necessary to eliminate a threat and prevent widespread destruction.
What’s unique about Captain Marvel is that almost no one on Earth knew her true identity, except for Nick Fury and a few people who knew her as Carol Danvers before she disappeared. Fury contacted her when Thanos attacked, but she was busy helping others on different planets and arrived after Thanos had already snapped his fingers. This delay was intentional, designed to keep the conflict balanced – much like how Thor being off-planet during Captain America: Civil War ensured neither side had a clear advantage.
In Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel makes a powerful entrance, single-handedly demolishing Thanos’s ship, the Sanctuary II, even while under heavy fire. During her fight with Thanos, she’s strong enough to force open his gauntlet and withstand a direct headbutt, only being significantly pushed back by the Power Stone. Interestingly, in the Marvel comics, Captain Marvel has even accessed the Binary powers, making her potentially more powerful than Thanos without the Infinity Gauntlet.
4. Savage Hulk
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos severely injures Hulk, causing him to hesitate and refuse to fight when Thanos arrives on Earth. However, Hulk wasn’t definitively defeated – he still could have fought. Instead, while the initial fight was still happening, Heimdall sent Hulk to Earth as a warning to the other heroes. Hulk’s reluctance to re-engage made the battle with Thanos a bit more challenging for the Avengers.
In Avengers: Endgame, the Hulk becomes less powerful because he gains intelligence and Bruce Banner takes more control. Traditionally, in the comics, this makes Hulk weaker – he’s at his strongest when he completely loses control and transforms into his most primal form, the Savage Hulk. The movie seems to have intentionally limited Hulk’s ability to rage so he wouldn’t defeat Thanos too quickly and end the fight prematurely.
We’ve only seen the truly savage version of Hulk once in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, during the battle with Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron – a result of Scarlet Witch’s powers. Even then, he quickly regained control of his emotions, ending the fight. Many fans believe that if Scarlet Witch had unleashed that same power on Thanos, Hulk would have easily won a rematch. However, the filmmakers chose to keep Bruce Banner in control, which meant Hulk stayed on the sidelines for the most important fight.
3. Scarlet Witch
In Avengers: Infinity War, the Scarlet Witch fought bravely with Vision, still learning to master her abilities while remaining a true hero. After Vision’s death, she faced immense emotional distress. During the final battle of Avengers: Endgame, she nearly defeated Thanos single-handedly, using her powers to severely damage his armor. She was on the verge of killing him when he ordered an attack from Sanctuary II, targeting everyone on the battlefield.
According to Monica Rambeau, Wanda was capable of defeating Thanos, but the ship’s attack stopped her. At that point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda was the most powerful character, surpassing even Captain Marvel and the Hulk due to her magical abilities. As Vision pointed out in Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda was the only one strong enough to destroy the Mind Stone, and she ultimately proved this by doing so in Endgame.
Scarlet Witch’s powers significantly increased after the events of Avengers: Endgame. She demonstrated this by taking over an entire town and creating a reality where everyone lived according to her desires. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she proved to be more powerful than Doctor Strange, but ultimately stopped herself when she recognized the extent of her actions, choosing to sacrifice herself to end the chaos. Had she possessed the Darkhold earlier, she potentially could have defeated Thanos much sooner.
2. Galactus
Galactus is a powerful cosmic being who exists in deep space. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, we’ve only seen him in a different reality, introduced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. After the Fantastic Four sent him away to another dimension to protect their world, it’s likely he’ll reappear in the future, potentially as a threat to Earth in the main MCU timeline. Importantly, he’s far more powerful than Thanos.
The Fantastic Four doesn’t defeat Galactus – they only send him away. Galactus is an incredibly powerful cosmic being, existing for 14 billion years, and far stronger than any villain the Marvel Cinematic Universe had shown until that point. He possesses the Power Cosmic, an energy source he shares with his messengers, granting them immense power. In the Marvel comics, Galactus is on the same power level as the Celestials and Watchers, far surpassing the capabilities of someone like Thanos.
Even with the powerful Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos struggled against incredibly strong cosmic entities like Eternity and the Celestials. However, Galactus has actually defeated Celestials before. Because Thanos’s strength relies on the Gauntlet itself, he wouldn’t stand a chance against Galactus in a direct fight.
1. Franklin Richards
Franklin Richards entered the world during a fierce battle between the Fantastic Four and Galactus. Even as a baby, he possessed incredible power, so much so that Galactus wanted to take him as an apprentice, believing Franklin could one day take over his role as a cosmic force of destruction. He quickly demonstrated his abilities were unmatched in the Marvel Universe by bringing his mother, Susan Storm Richards, back to life after she was lost in the fight with Galactus.
The mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps strongly suggests just how incredibly powerful Franklin Richards is – even Doctor Doom sought him out. In the comics, Doom required someone immensely powerful, like the Molecule Man, to maintain control of Battleworld. Franklin could easily fill that same role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on the comic books, it’s highly likely that Franklin will become the MCU’s most powerful being.
Franklin Richards has the incredible ability to reshape reality itself. In the Marvel comics, he’s even created entire universes from his imagination, and the beings within those universes worship him as a god because he brought their species into existence. Though initially thought to be a mutant, it was discovered that this was simply how his immense powers manifested – a way for him to feel like he belonged. There’s no known limit to Franklin’s abilities, making him far more powerful than Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
