A recent scene in the Marvel special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, received criticism for its visual effects, but the reason behind it has now been explained.
During a scene in The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle (the Punisher) falls from a building and lands on a metal crate. Some viewers online criticized the scene, claiming the visual effects looked unrealistic. However, a source at The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the fall was a practical effect – meaning it was filmed for real, not created with CGI.
The scene featured some visual effects, like digitally adding actor Jon Bernthal’s face to the stunt double, but the actual stunt was performed and filmed for the show.

On social media, @literallymecats likened the image to a “video game cutscene” and expressed their reaction with crying emojis, a feeling many others shared.
User @alberach134700 wondered if the scene was created using CGI or generated by an AI image tool. They pointed out that the wooden crate that fell on the castle kept its original shape even after pieces broke off, leading others to also question if AI was involved.
FranTGP was surprised the scene made it into the final version of the show, commenting that Castle appears to be moving his legs “like an upside down tortoise.”
A user on X, @M4tt_No8le, guessed that the scene was a genuine stunt, but thought the visual effects looked a little off. It’s now been confirmed that the shot was real – a stunt performer did the fall, and their face was later digitally replaced with Jon Bernthal’s.
Despite a few minor issues with sound quality and one particular scene, The Punisher: One Last Kill is being well-received. Released on May 12th, the special currently has an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jon Bernthal first played Frank Castle, The Punisher, in a Netflix series of the same name, which ran for two seasons and was part of Marvel’s broader effort to create interconnected shows similar to the Avengers movies. Netflix also released other popular Marvel series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.
Following the cancellation of its Marvel series on Netflix, Disney+ brought back Daredevil with the recent conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again on May 5th. In addition to the show’s main character, Matt Murdock, Born Again also featured the return of popular characters like Castle, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage.
Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle in a new Disney+ special called The Punisher: One Last Kill, which he wrote alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green. They both also served as executive producers, along with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, and Sana Amanat. The special also stars Deborah Ann Woll, Jason R. Moore, Judith Light, Kelli Barrett, Andre Royo, John Douglas Thompson, Nick Koumalatsos, and Colton Hill.
Jon Bernthal is returning as Frank Castle in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. This will be Tom Holland’s fourth film as Spider-Man, and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is now available to stream on Disney+.
