Alex Murdaugh, the former lawyer whose case was featured in the Netflix documentary ‘Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,’ will get a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court threw out his murder convictions.
In 2023, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at their hunting property in June 2021. He received two life sentences, effectively ending a highly publicized case that captivated the nation.
On May 13, 2026, South Carolina’s Supreme Court threw out Alex Murdaugh’s convictions, deciding the judge’s clerk, Rebecca Hill, had unfairly swayed the jury during the trial. Prosecutors intend to try Murdaugh for the murders again.
Court orders new trial for Alex Murdaugh
The court ruled that Hill improperly influenced the jurors against Murdaugh. Specifically, Hill allegedly warned them to carefully observe Murdaugh and not trust the evidence presented by his defense team, creating unfair bias.
The judges stated that Hill had unfairly influenced the trial, violating Murdaugh’s right to a fair hearing with an unbiased jury.
So, this reporter, Hill, actually wrote a book about the Murdaugh case – it was called ‘Behind the Doors of Justice’. But things got messy because it turned out parts of it were plagiarized, and it was quickly pulled. Now, she’s admitted guilt to a bunch of charges, like abusing her position, trying to cover things up, and lying under oath. It’s a pretty big fall from grace, honestly.
Even though Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions were overturned, he will stay in prison. He’s currently serving time for multiple financial crimes at both the state and federal levels, including a 40-year federal sentence for stealing millions from his clients and others.

Alex Murdaugh gained international attention as a central figure in a true-crime story following the downfall of his family’s powerful legal legacy in South Carolina. For many years, the Murdaugh family had significant influence over the state’s court system, with several family members working as prosecutors.
The Murdaugh case was featured in the Netflix docuseries Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, which aired over two seasons in 2023. Netflix explains the series explores the tragic events that revealed the shocking secrets of a prominent South Carolina family.
The first season of the show primarily detailed the 2019 boat accident where Paul Murdaugh caused the death of Mallory Beach. The second season then shifted to cover Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial, featuring conversations with those involved, like jurors, lawyers, witnesses, and people who knew the family.
Alex Murdaugh continues to say he didn’t kill his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Now that his convictions have been thrown out, the case will go back to court for a new trial, and possibly another one after that.
