As an analyst with over two decades of experience in the tech and gaming industry, I find myself intrigued by this latest development surrounding Flappy Bird. The saga of Dong Nguyen, the game’s creator, has always been fascinating to me – a man who created a global phenomenon but found himself overwhelmed by its success and the attention it brought.
As a dedicated crypto investor, I was thrilled to hear about the potential return of Flappy Bird, the addictive mobile game that once consumed my free time. However, it seems that the creator has decided against relaunching the title as a GameFi product in his first social media post since 2017, leaving gamers like me eagerly waiting for any future updates.
In February 2014, Flappy Bird was removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play due to its creator, Dong Nguyen, feeling responsible for the game’s addictiveness and not enjoying the attention and acclaim that came with its global success. This attention also included accusations that he copied art and character designs from Nintendo. The objective of the game was to keep a cartoon bird flying through columns of pipes without colliding with them.
Previously, Gametech Holdings submitted an objection against Nguyen keeping the Flappy Bird trademark rights. They claimed that the game being absent from virtual marketplaces for almost ten years indicated abandonment of the trademark. When Nguyen did not contest this, a U.S. trademark court granted Gametech a ruling in their favor by default.
One of the game’s developers, Michael Roberts, mentioned to CoinTelegraph that “we will be providing more details soon” when asked about potential links between the game and cryptocurrency.
Simultaneously on X, the initial reports about the game’s re-launch, which stated that the community had purchased the rights from Nguyen, were later disputed by community members. They clarified that he was actually deprived of the rights because of inactivity, and the re-launch has no connection to him.
