Dedicated fans were surprised to see Bel Powley reprise her role as Claire Conway in the third episode, “Tipping Point.” Now, the show’s creator has revealed the reasoning behind this return and how it fits into the current season’s narrative.

As people are wondering how to watch The Morning Show Season 4, I got a sneak peek at the third episode before talking to the actors. It was difficult not to mention Claire’s return – I was thrilled to see that storyline resolved! Charlotte Stoudt, the showrunner, explained to Deadline how this happened, stating:

While we were working on Season 4, we kept seeing reports of Extinction Rebellion protests – things like disrupting Broadway shows mid-performance, throwing paint, and blocking traffic in London. I’ve always thought Claire possessed a strong passion, a truly rebellious and revolutionary spirit.

She has a point. Claire’s departure from her job as a personal assistant on The Morning Show was largely due to Hannah’s death and the organization’s failure to support her. We last saw her expressing relief at Mitch’s death and even wishing the same fate for Fred. That kind of strong feeling is exactly what Stoudt is talking about.

As a big fan of The Morning Show, I was totally hooked from the start of Season 4! In the first few episodes, Reese Witherspoon’s character, Bradley Jackson, gets a mysterious tip from someone claiming UBA has been hiding things for years. Then, in episode three, it turns out the source is Claire, who’s actually been funding Extinction Revolt with her family’s money. Later on, the show’s creator, Stoudt, explained why that plot twist made sense, and he shared:

We wondered, ’Could she have joined one of those groups because she felt Hannah didn’t receive justice? Was she still attempting to dismantle the system? Could she reappear in our lives with that same agenda?’ Therefore, she became the ideal person to deliver this cover-up story, which we intended to be the main focus of the season.

It was really wonderful to see Claire return after so long, and I think it was a satisfying moment for viewers who’ve been watching The Morning Show since Season 1. Although Marion Cotillard is new to the cast in Season 4, the show still connects to its beginnings. We’ll just have to wait and see how everything plays out this season.
