
Katsuhiro Otomo, the mind behind the iconic anime film Akira, has started a new animation studio called OVAL GEAR, and they’re already working on a new project.
Katsuhiro Otomo is a hugely important figure in the world of anime, largely because of his work on Akira. This revolutionary manga and animated film was key in bringing Japanese animation to a global audience.
Released in 1988, this film has had a huge impact on artists and creators in anime, movies, video games, and science fiction. Recently, on May 11th, the director behind the film announced the creation of a new animation studio and is now hiring.
Akira director launches new studio and production
The studio was founded to continue showcasing the unique artistic style and visual approach that Otomo has become known for, and to create fresh animated content for global audiences.
The studio has already begun working on a new movie or show. They’ll share more information about it when everything is ready.

Besides the film Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo is also well-known for his anime movies Steamboy and Memories, and his long history of impactful manga and animation.
Although the details of the new project are still under wraps, many fans think it might be related to Orbital Era, the sci-fi anime film from Otomo that was originally announced back in 2019.
