In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning ahead of his new documentary, Marty, Life Is Short, Martin Short opened up about the devastating loss he’s experienced in recent months. He described the last four months as a “nightmare” for his family following the death of his daughter, Katherine, who died by suicide. Short likened both mental health struggles and cancer, noting his wife’s battle with the disease, as illnesses that can sometimes be fatal.
Speaking about the loss of his daughter, Short emphasized that mental illness is a serious disease that can unfortunately be deadly. He explained that his daughter struggled with mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder, for a long time and fought bravely. Ultimately, she reached a point where she couldn’t continue, and her final words to him were a plea to let her find peace. She simply said, ‘Dad, let me go.’
Martin Short has experienced a series of heartbreaking losses. His daughter, Katherine, passed away in February, adding to a lifetime marked by grief. He lost both parents before his 20th birthday, and his brother died in childhood. His wife, Nancy, succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2010. In a recent, devastating period, he lost both a close friend and his sister-in-law to cancer on the same day in October, followed by the deaths of lifelong friends Rob and Michelle Reiner, Catherine O’Hara, and finally, his daughter, all within four months. He described the rapid succession of losses as ‘staggering.’
