The Boys Season 5 Secretly Unites 3 Star Trek Actors

Warning: SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episode 6, “Though the Heavens Fall”

The popular show The Boys has featured several actors known from Star Trek, and season 5 added another one that some viewers might not recognize. As The Boys heads towards its final season, fans are bracing for a potentially explosive conclusion to the superhero satire on Prime Video.

The latest episode of The Boys season 5, titled “Though the Heavens Fall,” ended with a major twist: Soldier Boy gave Homelander the final dose of V1. Homelander, already the most powerful superhuman in the series, then injected himself with it, seemingly achieving immortality and moving closer to his goal of becoming a god.

A major storyline in the fifth and final season of The Boys revolves around Homelander establishing himself as a god-like figure and starting a church dedicated to his worship. This season also features a new superhero who presents himself as a captivating religious leader.

As a big fan of both Star Trek and The Boys, I was really excited to learn about the newest Supe in season 5! It turns out this character also creates a connection to the classic Star Trek universe, alongside Billy Butcher and Hughie – which is a fun surprise for those of us who know both shows.

Daveed Diggs Is The Boys Season 5’s Secret 3rd Star Trek Actor

I was so excited to see Daveed Diggs pop up in season 5 of The Boys as Oh Father! What a lot of people might not know is that he’s also a part of the Star Trek universe. He actually voiced Commander Tysess in Star Trek: Prodigy for both seasons 1 and 2. He’s a pretty significant character too, appearing in 25 out of the show’s 40 episodes!

I always thought Commander Tysess was a really cool character in Star Trek: Prodigy. He was the First Officer on both the USS Dauntless and the USS Voyager-A, and basically second-in-command to Admiral Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew. He wasn’t a huge character, but he showed up enough that you really got to know him as a solid, practical Starfleet officer.

Daveed Diggs is a celebrated performer who won both Tony and Emmy Awards for creating the roles of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton. Beyond the stage, this talented writer, singer, rapper, and producer has also appeared on television shows like Black-ish, starred in Snowpiercer, and lent his voice to animated films including Soul and The Little Mermaid.

Daveed Diggs’ character in The Boys, Oh Father, is a far cry from his role as Commander Tysess in Star Trek. Oh Father is outgoing and charming, but he knowingly joins forces with the dangerous Homelander and becomes one of The Seven, even though he recognizes Homelander as a fraud.

Jack Quaid & Karl Urban Have Been Star Trek & The Boys Actors All Along

You know, it’s funny—The Boys actually started with a bit of a Star Trek connection! Karl Urban, who’s amazing as Billy Butcher, was already a familiar face to Trek fans. He played Dr. McCoy—Bones—in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot way back in 2009, and he absolutely nailed the role in the follow-up movies, Into Darkness and Beyond. It’s cool to see how things connect in Hollywood, right?

Karl Urban moved on from Star Trek when he started working on The Boys, but for Jack Quaid, Star Trek was just getting started. A year after The Boys first aired in 2019, Quaid began voicing Ensign Bradward Boimler in the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks. He voiced both Brad and his transporter twin, William Boimler, throughout the show’s five seasons.

Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who star as Brad Boimler and Ensign Beckett Mariner in the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, recently appeared as their characters in a live-action episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Quaid also secretly provided the voice for a Ferengi character in the Lower Decks season 4 episode, “Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place.”

While ‘The Boys’ presents a dark and pessimistic world, a stark contrast to the hopeful future depicted in ‘Star Trek’, characters like Hughie, played by Jack Quaid, still hold onto a glimmer of hope. Similarly, Butcher, portrayed by Karl Urban, seems to have a hidden well of optimism. There’s even a possibility that Daveed Diggs’ character, Father, could find redemption and oppose Homelander.
