Brendan Fraser is fully committing to his return in The Mummy 4in one key way.
I’m getting some exciting buzz about The Mummy 4! Word started circulating late in 2025 that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were circling the project, and Universal has now officially dated it, confirming they’re both in. It’s fantastic news – they haven’t shared the screen together in 25 years, ever since Weisz didn’t return for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Fraser himself has hinted at some cool things to come with his return as Rick O’Connell, and it’s been 18 years since we’ve seen him in the role, so I’m definitely intrigued!
I was so thrilled to hear Brendan Fraser confirm on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that he’s coming back as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy 4! He said they’re going to reunite the original team, and honestly, that’s the only way to do it – the fans have been asking for this for years! He admitted he’d held onto hope for a long time, but started to think it might not happen when other Mummy movies were made without him. It’s just amazing news, and I can’t wait to see him back in action!
Shortly after, Fraser suggested the next film might return to familiar locations, saying they were planning to “saddle back” to where they’d filmed before. This likely refers to Morocco and the United Kingdom, the settings for the original two movies. He quickly stopped elaborating, implying he didn’t want to reveal too much, and it’s uncertain whether Egypt will also be featured in the upcoming installment.
Fraser didn’t share many specifics, but he did say he’s working to get in shape for his role as Rick O’Connell. He jokingly asked fans to wish him luck, noting he’s trying to get his 57-year-old body ready for the part.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Brendan Fraser became known as a likable and exciting action hero, starring in adventure films like The Mummy trilogy, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and George of the Jungle. He was dedicated to doing his own stunts, and this commitment famously led to a dangerous accident on the set of The Mummy, where he almost died while filming a hanging scene.
Brendan Fraser experienced significant health issues and injuries from the physically demanding stunts in his action films, requiring surgeries like a spinal fusion and a knee replacement. In a 2018 interview with GQ, he acknowledged pushing himself too hard, even to the point of harming himself. This led him to leave action movies and focus on dramatic roles, culminating in his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale. His final traditional action film was 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
If a fourth Mummy movie keeps up the fast pace of the earlier films, Brendan Fraser hasn’t said whether he’ll be doing his own stunts again or taking a more cautious approach. We’ll likely learn more as the movie gets closer to filming.
I’m so excited to hear that alongside Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, Dermot Mulroney will be back as Dwight! They haven’t announced anyone else joining the cast yet, but the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, have said they’re hoping to start filming in August, with preparations beginning this May. Originally planned for 2028, Universal has moved up the release date for the new Scream movie to late 2027 – I can’t wait!
The Mummy 4 will be released in theaters on October 15, 2027.
