Taylor Sheridan’s 9-Part Yellowstone Spinoff Confirms Kevin Costner’s Unexpected Replacement

Dutton Ranch has revealed who will take over the lead role previously held by Kevin Costner in the Yellowstone universe. The new series, launching with two episodes on May 15th, will feature Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they start a new chapter in South Texas.

In the future depicted in Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are living freely, far away from the responsibilities of safeguarding the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Throughout his life, John Dutton was completely dedicated to preserving his family’s land and legacy, and Beth and Rip always followed his lead. The Yellowstone series concluded with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) returning the family’s land to the Broken Rock Reservation.

Beth and Rip settle in Rio Paloma, Texas, only to discover that trouble seems to follow them. The Dutton-Wheeler family, including their adopted son Carter, face new challenges in South Texas, even though they’re hoping for a quiet life. This new setting also offers a fresh perspective on John Dutton, the character played by Kevin Costner in the original series.

Annette Bening’s Beulah Jackson Is Dutton Ranch’s Replacement For Kevin Costner & John Dutton

Taylor Sheridan keeps bringing big-name actors to his shows, and his latest, Dutton Ranch, is no exception. Annette Bening, an Academy Award nominee, joins the cast as Beulah Jackson, a new and unexpected character who takes over the role previously held by Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

The trailer for Dutton Ranch reveals that Beulah controls the biggest and most influential ranch in Rio Paloma. Like John Dutton in Yellowstone, she’s fiercely determined to safeguard her family’s heritage. A smart move for the show is to pit Beth and Rip against a female counterpart to John Dutton, making her their primary opponent.

Beulah informs Beth Dutton that her family has owned their ranch for 190 years. This establishes that Jackson’s claim to Rio Paloma is fifty years older than the Dutton family’s 140-year presence in Montana.

Like the Duttons with Yellowstone, the Jackson family has likely committed equally shocking acts to safeguard their ranch. Whether Beulah shares John Dutton’s strong family loyalty and moral compass remains to be seen.

Cleverly, Dutton Ranch portrays Beth and Rip as the ones disrupting the status quo, casting them in the same light as many of the enemies the Duttons have battled and defeated while protecting Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner’s Spirit Is In Dutton Ranch

The Dutton Ranch acknowledges and honors the legacy of John Dutton, as it should. In a trailer for the show, Rip tells Beth they’ve carried the most important part of him with them to Texas.

Rip is likely talking about the strength and determination John Dutton possessed – qualities Beth clearly shares – and all the valuable guidance Rip received from John over the years, in addition to some of John’s personal belongings.

With time having passed since Kevin Costner’s difficult departure from Yellowstone in 2024, the situation seems to be fading into the past. He might be open to making a brief appearance as John Dutton in flashback scenes for the new series, Dutton Ranch. Alternatively, the show could use existing footage of Costner as John Dutton.

One idea is to bring back Josh Lucas as a younger John Dutton in flashbacks for the new series. Like Yellowstone did with Rip and Beth, these flashbacks could show them as teenagers, possibly to contrast with the current storylines of Carter and his new girlfriend, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind).

Beth and Rip will always be deeply connected to Kevin Costner and his character, John Dutton. However, the future of the Dutton Ranch will challenge the couple as they face a new rival in Texas – someone mirroring John Dutton himself.

Beth and Rip are experienced in dealing with people like her father, but it’s uncertain just how powerful and threatening Beulah Jackson will be at the Dutton Ranch.
