Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 Story Teased By Cast & EPs After Mind-Blowing Season 1 Finale

Be warned – this contains spoilers for the final two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 1. Following a shocking season finale, the cast and creators of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord have hinted at what fans can expect in season 2.

The first season of Maul – Shadow Lord concludes with Maul and his allies attempting to escape the clutches of Janix. Their flight is complicated by relentless pursuit from Inquisitors, stormtroopers, and, most shockingly, Darth Vader. The season ends with a devastating loss – the death of Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki – which drives Jedi Padawan Devon Izara to give in to the dark side and accept Maul as her mentor.

During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at the premiere of the Maul – Shadow Lord finale, the cast and producers discussed what’s in store for the show’s second season. Charlie Bushnell, who plays Rylee Lawson, revealed they’ve already begun working on season 2 and are particularly focused on how his character will develop after the loss of his father, Brander Lawson (played by Wagner Moura).

Witwer shared that the project has been in development for some time and playfully suggested ideas for Maul’s future, including a ponytail, running an animal shelter, and befriending a squirrel voiced by David Collins (who previously voiced Spybot). Chris Diamantopoulos, who plays Vario, hinted that his character will remain connected to multiple storylines. Executive producer Brad Rau also reminded fans that Devon is still unaware of Maul’s involvement in the death of Jedi Master Daki. You can find their full comments below.

It’s difficult to discuss specifics without giving anything away, as we’re already starting to develop season two. I’m particularly interested in exploring Rylee’s character development further.

He’ll experience significant development in season two, especially following the finale. He’s essentially on his own now, with no real support system besides Devon and possibly Maul, though it’s unclear if Maul is truly reliable. Ultimately, he needs to rely on himself, and I’m excited to see him mature and become more independent in the new season.

Sam Witwer: It is happening. We’ve been working on it for a while.

The story features things like lightsabers and Mal getting a pony – things that would be amazing to see! There’s also a fun squirrel character voiced by David Collins, and a heartwarming plotline involving a dog rescue. Unfortunately, none of this actually happens in the story, but it’s what I wish would!

It’s always surprising to watch the finished product, even after I’ve read and performed the scripts. The animators and writers consistently impress me, and I love how the characters’ stories come together.

I really enjoy how involved my character is in everything happening on the show. Usually, stories focus on a main plot, a secondary plot, and smaller side stories. But with Vario, he’s all over the place – involved in the main action, the side plots, and everything in between. He’s a part of it all.

Devon is unaware that Mall was the one who pushed Daki. This is a secret known to very few, including the viewers.

When questioned about Maul’s actions potentially leading to a confrontation with Darth Vader, showrunners Rau and executive producers Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, and Dave Filoni remained intentionally vague. They highlighted that many characters are keeping secrets, and while they have a general story arc in mind, the narrative is also allowed to develop organically.

We have a lot of information, and we can confirm there will be a second season. However, you’ll need to watch it to find out what happens – we’re not giving away any secrets!

Brad Rau: We can’t say it.

There’s a lot we can’t reveal, and the characters themselves are keeping things hidden too. Whether those secrets will be exposed remains to be seen.

We always begin with a plan, and I discussed my overall vision with Matt, Brad, and Athena. But as we develop the stories, unexpected things happen, and you have to decide whether to incorporate them or not.

But so far everything’s gone as it needed to, and they’ve done a really good job.

It’s not surprising to hear the cast and crew are already deep into production on season 2. The show was renewed before season 1, Maul – Shadow Lord, even came out! Animated shows usually start development well ahead of time, and this early renewal, combined with how much progress they’ve made, suggests we won’t have to wait too long for the new season.

Regarding season two of Maul – Shadow Lord, Bushnell offers some fascinating details about the future of Rylee’s character. Throughout the first half of the season, Rylee mostly observed from the sidelines. Even when the Empire began pursuing him, he still largely followed the direction of his father, Devon, and Daki. Now that Rylee has lost both his father and his home, he’s truly on his own for the first time, which, according to Bushnell, will allow him to develop and mature.

Brander hoped Richard Ayoade’s character, Two-Boots, could deliver Rylee to his mother. However, comments from Bushnell suggest this might not happen, as the actor only spoke about Devon and Maul. The fact that Rylee’s mother works for the Empire adds a significant complication, considering they were responsible for the destruction of Brander and Daki’s life on Janix and their deaths.

I’m really curious to see how Devon reacts when he finally finds out what happened to Daki – everyone watching already knows, so it feels like it’s just a matter of time! And Vario… wow. From being totally used by Maul to now being the only one left from that whole group? That’s a huge change. The actor who plays him, Diamantopoulos, has said Vario isn’t just going to be the funny guy anymore, and will actually be a key player in how Maul builds his criminal empire. I can’t wait to see where that goes!

Critics overwhelmingly love Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, giving it a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it one of the best-reviewed stories in the entire Star Wars franchise. Episodes 9 and 10 are also currently the highest-rated installments on IMDb, earning scores of 9.6/10 and 9.8/10 respectively.
