Vin Diesel is well-known for his role in the Fast and the Furious movies, but one of his earlier leading roles was in the 2000 sci-fi horror film Pitch Black. This came three years after he famously voiced the lead character in the animated film The Iron Giant, and it attracted a different audience than his family-friendly animated hit. Even twenty-five years after the first film, fans are still eagerly awaiting and debating what will happen in the next Riddick sequel.
Vin Diesel is known as one of the most commercially successful action stars, largely due to the popularity of the Fast & Furious franchise and its characters, especially his role as Dominic Toretto which has earned billions of dollars. But before he began racing with Paul Walker, he starred in a highly-regarded monster movie that impressed both horror and sci-fi fans. Although the first film is widely loved, its sequel remains controversial even after twenty-one years.
Pitch Black Was A Cult Monster Movie
The movie Pitch Black starts with a cargo ship unexpectedly flying through the debris of a meteor shower, damaging the ship and causing it to crash land. Just before the crash, the ship’s captain, Carolyn Fry, attempts to abandon the passengers, but is prevented from doing so. Those who survive the crash include a diverse group: Abu al-Walid, an Imam traveling with three young Muslims on a religious journey; Shazza and Zeke, two hopeful miners; Paris, a rich collector of antiques; Jack, a teenage boy; a dangerous criminal; and Johns, the mercenary who brought Riddick into custody.
Stranded on a desolate planet with the dangerous Riddick, a group of survivors struggles to find their way. They discover an old research station, but when one of them, Zeke, vanishes, Johns leads a search, believing Riddick is responsible. Though Riddick is captured, another survivor, Fry, barely escapes a terrifying encounter with a creature living underground. They soon realize Riddick isn’t the biggest threat, and reluctantly free him, forming an uneasy alliance against nocturnal, flesh-eating beasts. As a total eclipse threatens to engulf the planet in darkness, the group races to fix a small spaceship and escape. But with each life lost to the creatures, the survivors become increasingly desperate and tensions flare.
Riddick’s Story Was Reinvented As A Space Opera
Okay, so after really enjoying Pitch Black, I was so hyped when Vin Diesel came back as Riddick in the sequel! It picks up a few years later, and the story kicks off with a bunch of mercenaries chasing Riddick across this really harsh, empty planet. He manages to turn the tables on them, and finds out someone from this super-advanced world, Helion Prime, has put a huge bounty on his head. He takes their ship and heads straight for Helion Prime, where he meets this guy named Imam who warns him that the planet is in danger from this terrifying death cult called the Necromongers. Turns out Imam was right – the Necromongers, led by this creepy, half-undead Lord Marshal, invade and start forcing their beliefs on everyone. But here’s the big twist – Riddick sneaks onto their ship and we find out he’s actually a survivor of this ancient, powerful warrior race called the Furyans!
Okay, so “Riddick” throws us right back into the thick of it. After being exposed, Riddick finds himself stranded on Helion Prime, which is about to be wiped out by these terrifying Necromonger warriors. Just when you think things can’t get worse, Toombs shows up with a new crew and captures Riddick, hauling him off to the truly awful Crematoria – a prison planet. Down in the depths of this hellhole, I was surprised to see a familiar face: Jack, now calling herself Kyra! After a brutal fight or two, Riddick teams up with other prisoners, plotting a desperate escape to the surface before the sun fries them all. But naturally, the Necromongers are waiting for them when they break through. It all builds to this massive showdown with the Lord Marshal, and honestly, it’s a thrilling ride to see if Riddick can pull off another impossible victory.
How The Sequel Reinvented The Franchise
The sequel shared similarities with sci-fi monster movies like Tremors, The Thing, and the Alien series, emphasizing suspense, horror, and a sense of isolation. However, it significantly departed from the first film, shifting its focus from monsters, survival, and a desolate setting to themes of war, conquest, and a much grander, more expansive universe. Essentially, it moved away from being an Alienstyle horror film and attempted to emulate the scope of Frank Herbert’s Dune*, delving into galactic empires and futuristic societies. Fans expecting more horror might have been let down, but the story introduced some intriguing concepts, particularly the enigma of the UnderVerse.
When The Chronicles of Riddick came out, it wasn’t a hit with critics or at the box office, though it did find some fans. It felt less like a sequel to the first movie and more like a sprawling fantasy adventure inspired by games like Dungeons & Dragons. This makes sense, as Vin Diesel is a big fan of tabletop roleplaying, and the cast and crew even played D&D during filming! The movie introduced new creatures, character types, cultures, and side stories, aiming to attract fantasy enthusiasts. While the story was ambitious, it shifted the tone and what fans enjoyed about the original. Despite being an entertaining film, it underperformed financially and was considered a failure until the release of another Riddick movie in 2013.
Riddick Tried To Get Back To Basics
Fans waited nine years for another Riddick movie. Many critics and viewers felt that Chronicles of Riddick didn’t live up to the original Pitch Black because it shifted from a small, dark, and contained story to a much larger scale. This was especially notable considering Chronicles cost $105 million to make, compared to just $25 million for Pitch Black. However, the film’s problem wasn’t necessarily a lack of creativity, but rather an inaccurate prediction of how much audiences would embrace a big, sprawling space opera version of Riddick.
Riddick aimed to recapture the spirit of the first film, and feels very similar to Pitch Black in many ways. The story picks up five years after Riddick defeated the Lord Marshal, and finds him betrayed and stranded on a desolate planet. There, he befriends and raises a wolf-like animal, then lures mercenary ships to his location, hoping to hijack one and escape. When two competing mercenary crews arrive – including one led by the father of a character seeking revenge – Riddick forces them to work together after discovering a dangerous species of nocturnal predators is heading their way. Despite Diesel’s efforts, the film didn’t perform well, likely because the franchise had lost much of its audience and the continuation of the Necromonger storyline wasn’t compelling enough.
The Chronicles Of Riddick Remains A Cult Classic
While The Chronicles of Riddick isn’t perfect – it has a slow middle part and some characters aren’t developed well – it’s still a fun, interstellar adventure. Unlike many monster movie sequels that disappoint, director David Twohy took a bold new approach, turning a promising start into a grand, cinematic experience.
The Riddick movies have varied quite a bit in terms of scope, style, and excitement, and many fans still consider the original, Pitch Black, to be the strongest film. While the sequel wasn’t without its flaws, it’s commendable that it didn’t simply repeat the formula of the first movie. The Chronicles of Riddick wasn’t perfect, but the bold vision of Vin Diesel and David Twohy deserved recognition, and the series has since gained a dedicated fanbase.
