Just days before it’s released, Marvel fans now know where the new special presentation fits into the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline. Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, was last seen in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. The showrunner for the special, Dario Scardapane, who previously worked as an executive producer on Marvel’s The Punisher, has explained the connection.
“I don’t know a ton about what goes on in Brand New Day, and I know very well where we left him at the end of Punisher Season 2,” Scardapane tells . “I think this tells the story of what happened next after Punisher and before and during the events of [Born Again] Season 2.”
The “Brand New Day” Scardapane refers to is the upcoming Marvel movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which releases in July. The film features Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk.
What Is The Punisher: One Last Kill About?
Marvel Studios is keeping the story of The Punisher: One Last Kill mostly under wraps. However, the official description hints that Frank Castle is looking for a purpose beyond getting revenge, but will be drawn back into violence by a surprising new threat.
This suggests Frank Castle, the Punisher, is searching for a reason to continue his violent actions. The title One Last Kill might mean he’s embarking on a final, dangerous mission before trying a different approach, or perhaps finding a way to justify his methods.
Some fans believe the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer hints at a storyline inspired by the 2022 The Punisher comics, where Frank Castle worked as a hired killer for a secretive ninja group.
The Punisher’s Disney+ Special Fills In a Gap In Frank Castle’s Story
Jon Bernthal, known for playing The Punisher, not only starred in The Punisher: One Last Kill but also helped write it. He’s been a dedicated fan of the character Frank Castle for a long time.
I’ve often said that Frank Castle holds a special place in my heart, and I deeply care about the character,” Bernthal explained about how he became involved in writing the special. “When we talked about what this project could be and the kind of Frank Castle people – especially those in the military, first responders, and comic book fans – really wanted to see, I shared my vision with the creators. They were incredibly supportive and encouraged me to continue contributing my ideas.”
I’m so excited about The Punisher: One Last Kill! I heard Jon Bernthal not only stars as the Punisher again, but he actually co-wrote the story with the director, Reinaldo Marcus Green. They’re both producing it too, along with some other big names like Kevin Feige. The cast also includes Jason R. Moore, Roe Rancell, and Mila Jaymes, so it sounds like a really strong team!
The Punisher: One Last Kill debuts on Disney+ on May 12.
