Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are at last learning why Peter Parker went through such a big transformation.
To mark the ten-year anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, the Russo brothers explained why they altered Spider-Man’s origin story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically removing the death of Uncle Ben. Joe Russo shared that Spider-Man was a beloved character growing up, and he connected with the idea of a young person facing immense responsibility. He believes that responsibility could be established through a tragic accidental death and the resulting feelings of loss and pressure, which would capture the essence they were aiming for.
He explained that if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man had felt responsible for Uncle Ben’s death, it would have drastically changed the character. The filmmakers decided against that approach, believing it would create a much darker and more intense portrayal. Instead, the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man experienced the tragic loss of Aunt May in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Some believe Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame served a similar purpose to Uncle Ben’s in Peter Parker’s story, providing a crucial loss of a father figure. The impact of losing Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., was also central to Peter’s story in both Spider-Man: Far From Home and, to a lesser extent, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Because Tom Holland’s Spider-Man joined the Avengers shortly after Andrew Garfield’s films ended, repeating Uncle Ben’s death for a third time in movies would have felt redundant. Instead, the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man explored new emotional ground by having Aunt May be the family member he’s forced to witness die.
The emotional struggles shown in previous Marvel films have set the stage for Tom Holland‘s return this year. He’ll be back in Phase 6 this summer, beginning a fresh storyline for his character. Now that Peter Parker is on his own and no one recognizes him, the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day story will focus on him navigating life as a young adult in a completely unfamiliar world.
You can watch Tom Holland as Spider-Man in these movies: Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. They’re all available to buy or stream at home.
