Taylor Sheridan’s new show, Dutton Ranch, offers a fresh take on his Yellowstone universe. The series, which begins with two episodes on Paramount+ on May 15th, follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler – characters who survived the events of Yellowstone – as they start over and build a new life together in South Texas.
The final episode of Yellowstone showed Beth and Rip leaving the Dutton Ranch after Kayce sold the family’s land to the Broken Rock reservation. They purchased a smaller ranch about forty miles west of Dillon, but the show later revealed this new home is located in Rio Paloma, South Texas.
In the latest trailer for Dutton Ranch, Beth simply expresses a desire for peace, but trouble always seems to find the Dutton family. The show boasts a strong cast, introducing both new friends and powerful enemies for characters like Rip and Beth, in a twist on the original Yellowstone storyline.
How Dutton Ranch Flips Yellowstone’s Premise
In the latest installment of the Dutton Ranch story, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) emerges as a new rival to Beth and Rip, mirroring the role previously held by John Dutton III (Kevin Costner). As seen in the trailer, Beulah claims her Rio Paloma ranch has been in her family for 190 years, making it significantly older than the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch was before Kayce sold it.
Similar to John Dutton in Yellowstone, Beulah Jackson is the current head of a family that has owned a large ranch for generations. Her main goal is to protect the ranch from those who want to take it over and ensure it stays in the family. In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are seen as the threats from outside.
Eventually, the full layout of the Dutton Ranch will be known, but Beth and Rip’s purchase and renaming of the Edwards Ranch as the “Dutton Ranch” is causing problems for Beulah Jackson and her land. Whether it’s simply being close to her property, or because of the Dutton family’s powerful reputation, Beth and Rip are now seen as enemies by Jackson.
Executive producer Taylor Sheridan and showrunner Chad Feehan (who later lost his job due to conflicts with the cast) created an interesting parallel by putting Beth and Rip in the same difficult position as the many enemies faced by the Duttons in Yellowstone. Even if they aren’t initially planning to take over Beulah Jackson’s ranch, the Dutton-Wheelers now understand what it feels like to be the ones being targeted.
Why Being Duttons Are What Will Save Beth & Rip
The series Yellowstone centers on John Dutton and his family – Beth, Kayce, and Rip – as they fiercely defend their ranch from various rivals and corporations. Despite successfully fighting off all challenges, the Dutton family’s control of the land eventually ended not because of external forces, but due to John’s death and the overwhelming expense of keeping the ranch afloat, leading Beth and Kayce to make the difficult decision to relinquish their hold on Montana.
Beulah Jackson likely knows the Dutton family’s history with Yellowstone National Park. Beth and Rip represent a generation that abandoned the family’s original way of life. So, when Beth arrives in South Texas and attempts to claim land belonging to another family, it’s easy to see why the Jacksons are upset about Beth and Rip starting a new “Dutton Ranch” in Rio Paloma.
I’m really fascinated by Beth and Rip’s situation down in South Texas. They’re pretty much a team of two, raising their adopted son, Carter. Beth’s got a head for business and a ton of money, and Rip is a true cowboy – he can handle anything from ranch work to a fight. But it’s clear they don’t have the same kind of pull the Duttons had back in Montana, you know, with the political connections and control over things like the police. They’re building something new, but it’s a lot harder without those advantages.
Beth and Rip were taught by John Dutton how to protect their ranch. However, the Dutton Ranch now challenges them, putting them in the position of those they’ve fought against and forcing them to prove their place on land they don’t actually own. They now understand what it feels like to be the enemies they’ve defeated in Yellowstone, but they’re determined not to suffer the same fate.
