New Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Released

Fans are excited! Universal Pictures just dropped a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie, based on Homer’s classic poem, The Odyssey. Nolan himself unveiled the trailer during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, describing it as the blockbuster event of its time – similar to early Marvel films. The trailer’s release on ‘May the Fourth’ also prompted Nolan to compare its potential impact to that of Star Wars creator George Lucas.

According to Nolan, modern comic book stories, from Marvel to DC and beyond, are heavily influenced by the ancient Greek epics traditionally attributed to Homer. He points out that we don’t even know if Homer was a real person, suggesting he was essentially the George Lucas – a foundational creator – of his era.

The Odyssey Was the “Marvel” of Its Day

Nolan explained that Homer’s epic poems were like the superhero stories of their time. He believes both explore the human fascination with the idea of gods or extraordinary beings living among us, with modern comic books serving as a contemporary version of that ancient theme.

Nolan explained that he’s been inspired by Homer’s work for years, even before he started making The Odyssey film. You can see this influence in movies like Interstellar and The Dark Knight. He added that all these films draw from The Odyssey, allowing him to revisit and appreciate the original story.

Of course, that influence goes both ways. .

I was really struck by what Nolan said about tackling The Odyssey. He explained there’s incredible pressure when you’re adapting something so iconic – it feels like you’re carrying the hopes of everyone who loves epic films! He learned from his experience with The Dark Knight trilogy that audiences aren’t necessarily looking for something radically new, but a truly heartfelt and dedicated interpretation. They want to feel like the filmmaker really poured their heart and soul into it, and that’s exactly what he aimed for with this film – to make the best possible version he could.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Is an Ancient Superhero Event

The film boasts a cast with extensive experience playing superheroes. Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, plays Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. His Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-stars, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, also appear in the film. Rounding out the impressive cast are Anne Hathaway (Catwoman from The Dark Knight Rises), Robert Pattinson (the recent Batman in The Batman), Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther), and Charlize Theron (The Old Guard).

Nolan talked about filming The Odyssey. He described it as a very raw and physical experience, explaining that much of the movie was shot at sea. He and the cast spent the last four months filming on actual waves and in real locations, aiming to realistically portray the difficulty and bravery of ancient voyages into unknown waters. He emphasized the ever-changing and often frightening power of the ocean, and how they wanted to convey the sense of venturing into a completely uncharted world.

The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17.
