Everyone loves those heartwarming American TV shows that are funny, touching, and have memorable characters you can’t help but quote. We all have those go-to shows we watch over and over again, starting them as soon as we finish. When the American version of The Office first aired in 2005, viewers eagerly anticipated each week’s episode and the antics of the Dunder Mifflin team.
The TV show The Office was an instant success, consistently drawing a large audience. People loved watching Michael Scott and his colleagues, and episodes were frequently replayed in homes nationwide. However, while The Office holds up well for repeat viewings, many other American TV shows have become even more popular for rewatching, sharing memorable lines, and binge-watching.
Visit Your Local Parks and Recreation Department
Few things are more quintessentially American than a TV show set in the Midwest. This one focuses on a small town in Indiana striving to improve. The 2007 sitcom earned a strong 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received over 75 award nominations, winning 13. Given that it was created by the minds behind Saturday Night Live and The Office – Greg Daniels and Michael Schur – it’s no surprise the show remains highly rewatchable.
The TV show Parks and Recreation follows Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, over seven seasons as she enthusiastically works to improve her town of Pawnee, Indiana – beginning with the creation of a new community park. What really set the show apart was how the writers adjusted Leslie’s character after the first season, as early viewers found her a bit too silly.
Okay, so the supporting cast in this show is seriously stacked – Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, and even Nick Offerman! Honestly, it took the whole mockumentary thing that The Office did so well, and just cranked it up to eleven. Plus, it’s full of lines that are completely absurd, but somehow you totally get them – it’s brilliant.
New Girl Becomes an Old Friend by the Third Rewatch
Whether you connect with the polished Schmidt, the endearingly quirky Winston, the unpredictable Jess, or the eternally youthful Nick, New Girl offers something for every viewer. No matter your preference, it’s a show that holds up to repeat viewings, revealing new details and nuances each time. Some fans even enjoy focusing on a different character with each watch, thanks to the show’s consistently strong supporting cast.
From 2011 to 2018, the comedy New Girl followed the lives of Jess, Nick, Winston, and Schmidt as they shared a loft apartment, with Jess’s close friend Cece often crashing with them. You’ll likely watch it so much that you’ll start talking like the characters – maybe mispronouncing words like Schmidt, or even using them incorrectly like Nick!
Everyone loves New Girl – it has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a whopping 85 nominations throughout its run. The show even set the bar for how we picture roommates living together! If you enjoyed New Girl, you should definitely check out Single Parents, another show created by Elizabeth Merewether. But despite all the times fans have rewatched it, the rules of the game True American still remain a mystery.
Make an Emergency Appointment to See St. Denis Medical
It’s great to have David Alan Grier back on television! The new 2024 comedy, St. Denis Medical, is a mockumentary that follows the staff at a hilariously chaotic and understaffed hospital. Created by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer – the team behind Superstore and American Auto – the show is quickly gaining attention.
Wendi McLendon-Covey is a familiar face, having appeared in countless TV shows. She shines as Joyce Henderson, a delightfully eccentric and endearing character. The supporting cast – David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi – complete the team, offering a wonderful mix of laugh-out-loud humor and genuine support.
As a big movie and TV fan, I have to say that an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes feels way too low for this show. Honestly, who can’t relate to a boss who tries too hard, a coworker who’s clearly checked out, or that one person who has to be the best at everything? And if you’re like me and love medical dramas but prefer to avoid all the graphic stuff, this is perfect – you can watch it again and again without wincing!
Modern Family Will Bring You Home Again and Again
Few American TV shows capture family life as well as Modern Family. It resonates with viewers because it realistically portrays all sides of family dynamics – the funny, the frustrating, and the deeply touching – through the experiences of the Pritchett and Dunphy families. It feels relatable because it mirrors so many real-life situations.
Watching Al Bundy navigate fatherhood again is surprisingly heartwarming, even though he never initially wanted the role. Ed O’Neill, a seasoned TV star, brings incredible energy to the part of the family’s patriarch. He’s surrounded by a fantastic supporting cast, including Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet, who all contribute to the show’s charm.
With memorable guest stars, heartwarming moments, and the endlessly optimistic Phil Dunphy, Modern Family is a show that resonates with viewers and reminds them to appreciate their own families. Despite already earning an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – which many feel is deserving of being even higher – the show offers a comforting space for laughter, tears, and pondering life’s little mysteries, like the iconic question, “Why the face?”
Fans Won’t Make a Huge Mistake Rewatching Arrested Development
Created by Mitchell Hurwitz, Arrested Development originally aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006 and was later revived on Netflix from 2013 to 2019. The show centers on the Bluth family, who lose their fortune and are forced to adjust to a much simpler life after their father is sent to prison for financial crimes. They end up living together in a modest model home.
This show is worth revisiting just for its impressive guest stars – Henry Winkler and Liza Minnelli – and the fact that Ron Howard narrates. Beyond that, it’s cleverly written with running gags that reappear throughout the series thanks to creative use of flashbacks. But the real highlight? Everyone dreams of a ride in the stair car!
Featuring a talented cast including Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia de Rossi, and Jessica Walter, it’s not surprising that Arrested Development received so many award nominations. It’s actually surprising, though, that it only has a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Move in With the Crew in Cougar Town
Let’s talk about Cougar Town, a really enjoyable show starring Courtney Cox. It originally aired from 2009 to 2015 and centers around Jules Cobb, a mom navigating life after divorce. With a high 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show offers a funny and relatable look at starting over and the challenges of getting older.
The show was created by Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel and is set in the fictional town of Gulfhaven, Florida. The main cast – Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Bird, Josh Hopkins, Ian Gomez, Brian Van Holt, and Bob Clendenin – call themselves the ‘Cul-de-Sac Crew.’ They’re known for their sarcastic humor and love of wine.
This show is both funny and heartwarming, tackling serious issues like divorce, single parenthood, and Alzheimer’s. You’ll find yourself constantly trying to recall all the playful nicknames and figure out how to play Penny Can!
Don’t Try to Leave The Good Place
Seriously, if you haven’t seen The Good Place yet – and rewatched it a few times – you’re missing out! Creator Michael Schur has once again given us a show filled with clever, funny ways to express ourselves without using any swear words. The Good Place is a unique comedy that asks big questions about what happens after death and what it means to be a good person.
Though it only lasted four seasons (2016-2020), The Good Place remains a beloved show with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With relatable characters like Chidi, Eleanor, Tahani, and Jason, there’s someone for everyone to connect with. But we all know…
The show boasts a fantastic cast – Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto, and Ted Danson – and their incredible chemistry shines in every episode. Get ready to ponder life’s biggest question – what happens after death – and find yourself endlessly rewatching The Good Place, constantly thinking about those ‘Jeremy Bearimys’.
Get Booked With the Detectives in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Fans loved following the hilarious detectives of the 99th Precinct in the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired from 2013 to 2021. Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, this single-camera comedy series focuses on seven NYPD detectives as they navigate life with a new captain.
Andy Samberg plays Detective Jake Peralta, the precinct’s top arrest-making officer, alongside Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller, Chelsea Peretti, Terry Crews, and the newly assigned Captain Holt.
Rather than focusing heavily on solving crimes, Brooklyn Nine-Nine centers on the connections between the detectives and officers within the precinct. The show received nearly 150 award nominations throughout its run and boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so we highly recommend revisiting and enjoying Brooklyn Nine-Nine as many times as you like!
