Melissa Benoist flies again as Supergirl in DC Universe art.
Melissa Benoist portrayed Supergirl for six seasons on The CW’s Supergirl. As part of the Arrowverse, she appeared as the character in several large crossover events, battling villains like Lex Luthor and the Anti-Monitor. Benoist’s Supergirl, along with Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow and Grant Gustin’s The Flash, formed the core heroic trio of the Arrowverse. She also acted alongside Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, before he starred in his own series, Superman & Lois. Now, five years after the final season of Supergirl aired, fans are creating art featuring Benoist as Supergirl for James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
Instagram user @socjoh created an image showing how Melissa Benoist, who previously played Supergirl, would look in the upcoming DCU ‘Supergirl’ movie, replacing Milly Alcock in the role.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this! The new Supergirl movie hits theaters June 26th, and it’s bringing back the actress who briefly played her at the end of last year’s Superman film. The cool thing is, new fan art shows her Supergirl rocking the same brown coat and sunglasses as the version we saw in the Superman movie poster. But this time, she’s wearing her full Supergirl suit under the coat, and she’s looking straight at you, which is different from the poster. There are also a couple of other images floating around showing her with Krypto, which is awesome!
Melissa Benoist Has Commented On Milly Alcock Taking Over As Supergirl
Even though Melissa Benoist hasn’t played Supergirl recently, she still follows the character’s adventures on screen. In a March 1, 2024 interview with ScreenRant, she shared her enthusiasm for the new Supergirl series, explaining that she finds every version of the character inspiring because of the ideals Supergirl represents. Benoist also expressed hope that each new portrayal of the DC hero will resonate with viewers, allowing young women to see themselves reflected in the character and find value in her story.
Milie Benoist’s previous work in television is particularly relevant to how Alcock will portray Supergirl within the new DC Universe. When Peter Safran and James Gunn revealed their plans for the DCU, they emphasized that actors could reprise their roles across different mediums, including live-action, animation, and video games. Although Alcock hasn’t contacted previous Supergirl actors, Benoist’s performance provides a strong example of how the character can succeed on television.
Could Melissa Benoist Ever Play Supergirl Again?
The tagline for DC fan art is “In Some Multiverse.” This is probably true if Melissa Benoist were to reprise her role as Supergirl. Currently, DC doesn’t have any other significant live-action or animated projects where a Supergirl different from Emily Alcock’s version could appear. Therefore, Benoist’s most realistic chance of returning as Supergirl would be through a DC Universe multiverse crossover event, potentially uniting her version of Kara with Alcock’s.
With fans strongly hoping James Gunn will cast Grant Gustin as The Flash, the idea of bringing heroes from the ‘Arrowverse’ into the new DC Universe (DCU) through the multiverse is gaining traction. The recent season of ‘Peacemaker’ already showed different Earths existing, which could make this possible. While less probable, another option would be for Melissa Benoist to reprise her role as Power Girl (the Earth-Two Supergirl) and become a permanent part of the DCU.
