The Other Bennet Sister Debuts With Fantastic Rotten Tomatoes Score

It’s well-known that popular, classic books often get adapted into different versions. Pride and Prejudice is one such book, having been adapted many times, and a new version is on its way.

Following numerous adaptations of the original story, including a zombie-themed version, the BBC has created a sequel to the popular novel. The new ten-part series, titled The Other Bennet Sister, is based on Janice Hadlow’s 2020 book of the same name. This time, the story focuses on Elizabeth Bennet’s sister, Mary. Before its release in the U.S., the series received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 92% approval rating.

The historical drama first launched in the UK on March 15th and will arrive in the U.S. on May 6th, streaming on BritBox. Early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with the show earning a near-perfect score from critics based on the first 13 reviews. While this score may change as more reviews are published, it’s already getting fantastic feedback. Viewers also seem to love it, giving it a 95% approval rating.

What Are Critics Saying About The Other Bennet Sister?

This new historical drama reimagines the story of Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Mary Bennet. Often overshadowed by her sisters due to her shy nature and love of books, Mary faces an uncertain future after Jane and Elizabeth marry and their father passes away.

The novel follows a woman who leaves home and embarks on a trip to London and the Lake District, seeking both personal growth and love. While intended as a continuation of a familiar story, The Other Bennet Sister primarily centers on the character of Mary.

Ella Bruccoleri stars as the main character, with Ruth Jones and Richard E. Grant playing Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Dónal Finn, known from Young Sherlock, plays Tom Hayward, one of two men hoping to win Mary’s hand, and Laurie Davidson plays William Ryder. Poppy Gilbert is Elizabeth, and Victor Pilard portrays Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Viewers are loving this adaptation, especially those who enjoyed other shows set in the Regency period. The acting has been widely praised, with many highlighting the performance of Bruccoleri, and the show is being described as a comforting and enjoyable watch. In a review, Ed Power of The Irish Times called it a heartfelt tribute to those who feel like outsiders, while also acknowledging its place within the larger collection of Jane Austen-inspired works.

Netflix Is Adapting Pride & Prejudice Again

Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice has been adapted for the screen many times, with the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen and the 1995 miniseries featuring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth being particularly well-loved. Now, Netflix feels it’s time for a fresh adaptation of the classic novel.

A new adaptation of the classic story is scheduled to launch in late 2026. It’s written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, and will star as Elizabeth Bennet, with Jack Lowden playing Mr. Darcy. Olivia Colman, Rufus Sewell, Freya Mavor, Fiona Shaw, and Louis Partridge also join the cast.

The Other Bennet Sister premieres on BritBox on May 6.
