Star Wars is still just as powerful as it’s always been.
Nielsen recently shared data about how much Star Wars content fans watched in 2025, offering a look at the franchise’s most popular projects. Even though the sequel and prequel trilogies have divided audiences, Star Wars has remained popular for decades because of its expansive sci-fi universe, exciting adventures, and relatable characters. Much of the recent growth has happened on Disney+, with shows like the Western-themed The Mandalorian and the animated series Maul — Shadow Lord attracting large audiences.
Nielsen recently published data showing how much Star Wars content was streamed on Disney+ in 2025 for Star Wars Day. Viewers watched a combined 33 billion minutes – that’s 550 million hours – of Star Wars movies, shows, cartoons, and documentaries. Live-action films accounted for the largest portion of viewing time at 44.2%, followed by live-action series (16.8%), animated projects (16.8%), and documentaries (0.2%).
According to the data, A New Hope was the most popular movie. The Phantom Menace came in second, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was third. A New Hope was the first Star Wars film released, and The Phantom Menace started the prequel trilogy and introduced the character Darth Maul. Viewership of Rogue One likely increased after the 2025 finale of Andor, as the two stories connect directly.
I wasn’t surprised at all to learn that Andor was the biggest hit on Disney+ last year – especially with season 2 dropping! It really captivated me, and apparently a lot of other people too. Skeleton Crew came in a strong second, and The Mandalorian rounded out the top three. It was amazing to see Andor leading the way even on May the 4th! Nielsen’s data was fascinating too – it showed how different generations connected with different shows. While Gen Alpha and Baby Boomers loved The Mandalorian, Millennials and Gen X, like me, were all about Andor. And surprisingly, Gen Z really enjoyed The Clone Wars! It just proves there’s something for everyone in the Star Wars universe.
Recent data from 2025 shows that the Star Wars universe continues to be a major draw for Disney+, with both new shows and classic films performing well. 2026 looks promising too, especially with the upcoming theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu – the first big-screen adventure for those characters since 2019. Fans can also expect the second season of Ahsoka to debut on Disney+ later this year, completing a strong year of Star Wars content.
The future looks bright for the Star Wars franchise. Upcoming projects like the 2027 film Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, and a new movie continuing the story from the most recent trilogy, are already in the works. With hundreds of millions of hours of Star Wars content streamed on Disney+ in 2025, the universe remains incredibly popular, and it’s set to grow even more with exciting new stories and expanded lore.
