Okay, so this is wild – Richard Hammond, you know, from Top Gear and The Grand Tour, just drove a car decorated to look like an anime girl in a race, and the internet is losing it! Seriously, everyone’s loving it. It’s such a bizarre and awesome sight.
Anime-themed race cars are becoming a big trend, especially for 2026. We’ve already seen popular characters featured on the track – Marin Kitagawa from ‘My Dress-Up Darling’ appeared on a GT3 car in April, and a high-end BMW recently turned heads with a design inspired by ‘Umamusume’.
Known for his love of cars and distinctive style, TV personality Richard Hammond has taken to the racetrack with a truly one-of-a-kind race car, adding another exciting chapter to his automotive adventures.

On May 3rd, Hammond shared a video of his GT3 RS, which he’d customized with artwork from the mobile game Azur Lane. The car featured a design based on Taihou, a well-known character from the game.
If you’re unfamiliar with Azure Lane, it’s a game featuring anime girls inspired by famous warships. Similar to how Umamusume turns real-life horses into adorable anime characters, Azure Lane uses the same concept.
It’s no surprise that fans of both Hammond and Azure Lane have been having fun with this unexpected team-up – they’ve been quick to point out how funny it is.

I saw someone online point out the weirdest combination of things – Chinese gacha games, Japanese warships, German cars, and a British presenter! And honestly, when I saw Hammond driving a car themed after a character from a Japanese warship game, it was so unexpected, but it actually… totally makes sense for him. It’s just perfect, you know?
Many viewers also hoped to see Jeremy Clarkson and James May, Richard Hammond’s co-hosts from The Grand Tour, participate in the anime fun, suggesting an episode featuring a car and anime characters would be hilarious.
Oh my god, Hammond, what have you done to my car?! I can barely make it out, but it looks like it’s been completely covered in… High School DxD artwork?! Seriously?!
It’s been so cool seeing celebrities get into anime lately! Remember when Neymar showed up in that eFootball x Naruto collab back in April? It was totally out of left field seeing him as a ninja – a really fun surprise, honestly!
