DC Villain Who “Scared The S**t” Out Of James Gunn Teased To Return In 95% RT Series

A villain who deeply frightened James Gunn is potentially returning in the DCU’s Creature Commandos.

The first season of the animated series kicked off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in the DCU, arriving before the next installments of Superman and Peacemaker. The story centers on Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who assembles a team of supervillains from Belle Reve Penitentiary. This team includes characters like the Bride (Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), and Weasel (Sean Gunn), all led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo).

Dean Lorey, the showrunner and writer for the upcoming Instagram series Creature Commandos, shared a photo of the script’s title page for the first episode of season 2. The episode is called “Starry Night,” which might suggest the return of the villain Starro the Conqueror, who was last seen in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. You can see the image below.

I remember when James Gunn was promoting The Suicide Squad – he talked about Starro, and how genuinely scared he was of the character! Apparently, Starro always terrified him. That’s why he chose him as the villain – he wanted something truly scary and over-the-top, but that still felt like it could realistically threaten people in a place like Cologne, Panama. It was a really cool way to blend the fantastical with the grounded reality of the film.

Although The Suicide Squad defeated Starro, the character isn’t necessarily gone for good. The movie belongs to the older DCEU timeline, which is separate from the newer DCU, but elements from it – particularly in shows like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker – are still being incorporated. Plus, Starro has a history in the comics of surviving or changing even after being defeated, which could allow the character to reappear without contradicting what happened in the film.

Even without Starro, there’s a lot happening after the first season of Creature Commandos ended, especially with the deaths of Nina and Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova). Now, The Bride is in charge of the team, and we’ll see some new faces joining them, like King Shark. Plus, the scene after the credits showed that Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour) is still alive and will likely keep chasing The Bride.

James Gunn is still overseeing the production of Creature Commandos season 2, but he’s shifted from writing the episodes himself, as he did for season 1. He wrote the first episode and is now leading the writing team for the new season. Currently, Gunn is filming Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to Superman, which is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Rick Flag Sr. will appear in the film, continuing his story from Superman and Peacemaker season 2, where he formed an unexpected partnership with Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult).

I’m really excited for Creature Commandos to come back, but we don’t have a firm release date just yet. Besides the animated series and the Man of Tomorrow project, DCU has a lot more in the works! We’re also getting Supergirl, Lanterns, and a show focusing on Clayface, which all sounds amazing!
