The Strongest Mortal Kombat II Movie Characters, Ranked

Originally slated for release in October 2025, the new film is finally arriving in just a few weeks. It will feature Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a popular character from the Mortal Kombat video games. The trailers have highlighted that Johnny doesn’t have any superpowers—he jokingly claims his good looks are his only ability. He’s also not a skilled fighter; his experience is in acting in action movies, not martial arts.

Johnny is a classic underdog story because the Mortal Kombat tournament draws incredibly powerful warriors from different worlds. The new movie will feature a diverse cast of fighters – monks, ninjas, cyborgs, sorcerers, and alien creatures – all skilled in combat. However, drawing from the game’s history and the previous film, some of these fighters are significantly stronger than others.

Kung Lao Is Descended From a Mortal Kombat Legend

Max Huang played Kung Lao, a Shaolin monk, in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, and he’ll be back in the next film as an undead warrior called Revenant. In the first movie, Liu Kang called Kung Lao “the grand champion of the Order of Light,” and he proved worthy by easily defeating the vampire Nitara. Just like in the Mortal Kombat games, this Kung Lao is named after his ancestor, the Great Kung Lao, who once won a major tournament for Earthrealm.

Beyond his mastery of unarmed combat, Lao fights with a special weapon: a hat with a dangerously sharp edge. He can throw this hat to attack enemies and even use it to teleport. While known in the games as one of Earthrealm’s best fighters, Lao has a major flaw – his pride. He’s often too confident, leading him to make mistakes that his opponents can take advantage of.

Kitana Has Millennia of Fighting Experience

Adeline Rudolph joins the cast of Mortal Kombat II as Kitana, the adopted daughter of the powerful Shao Kahn. Though originally loyal to him, she ultimately switched sides to fight for good. As someone from Edenia, Kitana is incredibly long-lived, with a lifespan of thousands of years, and has spent most of that time mastering deadly fighting techniques.

Kitana fights with a pair of bladed fans, using quick, flowing movements to outmaneuver her enemies. In the Mortal Kombat video games, she can also control the wind with her fans, but that ability hasn’t been shown in the movie trailers yet. Even without wind powers, Kitana is a powerful fighter. Plus, her deep understanding of Shao Kahn and his army will make her a valuable ally to those defending Earthrealm.

Noob Saibot Is Sub-Zero’s Ultimate Form

Joe Taslim returns as Bi-Han, the cold-blooded Sub-Zero, from the previous Mortal Kombat movie. Though killed by Scorpion in the first film, he’ll be back in the sequel as a powerful, shadowy wraith. While the trailers only identify him as Bi-Han, fans of the games will recognize this as Noob Saibot – a character name that’s a clever nod to the series’ creators, Ed Boon and John Tobias.

After becoming Noob Saibot, Bi-Han traded his ice powers for control over shadows. This allows him to create a dark, solid copy of himself, effectively making any fight a two-versus-one situation. Despite being potentially very strong, Noob Saibot hasn’t performed well in the games. For instance, in the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, he was defeated by Lao, Kabal, and others.

Scorpion Combines Ninja Skills With Demonic Power

Hiroyuki Sanada returns as Scorpion, also known as Hanzo Hasashi, from the previous movie. Scorpion is a highly skilled ninja from the Shirai Ryu clan, specializing in swordplay and using rope darts. At the end of the last film, he came back from the Netherrealm as a vengeful spirit, seeking retribution for the murder of his family.

Scorpion has been revamped with a chain instead of a rope dart and can now wield hellfire. He managed to overcome his longtime enemy with a little assistance from Cole Young, and trailers suggest he’ll do it again in Mortal Kombat II. The next movie might also showcase more of his abilities from the games, like teleportation and summoning demons. While not the main hero, Scorpion is the face of the Mortal Kombat series, and his strength reflects that popularity.

Sindel Possesses Dangerous Supernatural Abilities

Shao Kahn’s wife, Sindel, played by Ana Thu Nguyen, is even more formidable than his daughter. Like Kitana, she’s Edenian and possesses extraordinary abilities, including incredibly powerful sonic screams and the power to control her hair as a weapon. In the Mortal Kombat games, Sindel is among the strongest characters who aren’t gods. This was demonstrated in Mortal Kombat 11, where she defeated the Elder Goddess Cetrion—a feat Kronika acknowledged very few mortals could accomplish.

Not much is known about how Sindel will be portrayed in the movie, but early signs suggest she’ll be a very strong character. The first Mortal Kombat film showed Sonya Blade’s energy rings could instantly defeat Mileena, however, a trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II reveals Sindel can deflect those same rings simply by using her voice. This ability is consistent with her powers in the video games, so even though the trailers present her as a villain, she might ultimately fight on the side of good.

Shang Tsung Can Transform Into Other Kombatants

In the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, Chin Han played the villainous sorcerer Shang Tsung, and he’ll be a key ally to Shao in the next film. He killed Lao, but his magical abilities shown in the movie – teleportation and soul-draining – were just a small glimpse of how powerful he truly is.

Tsung is a dangerous opponent in the games, attacking with fire skulls, energy blasts powered by absorbed souls, and even summoning massive snakes. His most powerful ability is shapeshifting, which lets him transform into anyone he wants. While the full extent of his shapeshifting isn’t fully explained, in the game it allows him to copy the appearances and fighting skills of other characters, making him a very unpredictable and adaptable fighter.

Quan Chi Is Mortal Kombat’s Most Dangerous Sorcerer

Quan Chi, a mysterious new demon played by Damon Herriman, is one of the most intriguing characters in Mortal Kombat II. He hasn’t been featured much in the movie’s promotion, but if he’s similar to his video game version, he’ll be a significant danger to both the heroes and possibly even the other villains.

Quan Chi is a sorcerer with powers similar to those of Tsung, though he can’t change his shape. He’s particularly skilled in necromancy – the magic of controlling the dead. Writer John Vogel once called him the most powerful sorcerer in the Mortal Kombat universe, and the game Mortal Kombat: Deception’s opening shows him defeating Tsung. The new movie might briefly feature Quan Chi to establish him as the primary villain for a future film.

Raiden Is the Original God of Mortal Kombat

Tadanobu Asano is reprising his role as Raiden, the powerful God of Thunder and Earthrealm’s defender, in Mortal Kombat II. As seen in the first film, Raiden has incredible abilities, including summoning lightning, teleportation, and creating protective force fields – even against formidable opponents like Tsung. While he didn’t fight in the previous movie, the new trailer suggests that will change, showing Raiden using his famous Electric Fly attack against Tsung.

Raiden isn’t one of the most powerful gods in the world of Mortal Kombat – he’s below the Elder Gods and Titans. However, he’s still much stronger than most other characters. His power is so immense that he’s usually not allowed to compete directly in the Mortal Kombat tournaments unless he limits his abilities by taking on a human form.

Shao Kahn Is the Greatest Threat to the Realms in Mortal Kombat

Bodybuilder Martyn Ford has been cast as Shao Kahn, the main villain in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie. Shao Kahn is the emperor of Outworld and aims to conquer all realms. While the Mortal Kombat games haven’t clearly defined his species, he’s incredibly powerful and often considered immortal, similar to a god like Raiden. Regardless of his origins, Shao Kahn is known as one of the most physically dominant characters in the series, towering over seven feet tall.

Shao has magical abilities, including stealing souls, but he usually relies on overwhelming physical strength. Liu Kang is Mortal Kombat’s Strongest Fighter

Liu Kang, the Shaolin monk played by Ludi Lin in the films, is considered the strongest fighter in the Mortal Kombat universe. While the movies center around characters like Cole and Johnny, Liu Kang is the main hero in the video games. Chosen by Raiden, he’s Earthrealm’s representative in the Mortal Kombat Tournament. A skilled master of many martial arts, including Jeet Kune Do, Liu Kang can also manipulate fire even more effectively than Scorpion. Throughout the game’s story, he’s repeatedly won the Mortal Kombat Tournament, defeating powerful opponents like Raiden and Shao Kahn.

Initially, Liu Kang was considered to be about as strong as another monk named Lao. However, he’s become much more powerful over time. In Mortal Kombat 11, he even became a god and recreated the entire universe. While the 2021 film showed him as a mentor figure, he still demonstrated incredible fighting skills, easily defeating Kano and killing the incredibly fast Kabal to avenge Lao. If the films continue to follow the pattern of the games, Liu Kang will only become more powerful in future installments.
