Hit New $191M Non-Disney Animated Film Officially Releases On Netflix In 2 Weeks

Animation lovers are about to get a special treat on streaming.

Disney, especially through its Pixar studio, is the clear leader in the animation industry. They consistently release popular films that perform well both with audiences and critics. This year, Pixar’s original movie, Hoppers, has already earned over $370 million worldwide.

Netflix has announced that the animated movie GOAT will be available to stream starting May 14th. They’re promoting the film by highlighting that Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, voices the main character.

I’ve been really excited about Sony Pictures Animation’s new movie, GOAT, which came out in February. While they aren’t as huge as Disney when it comes to animation, Sony has made some fantastic films – I especially loved Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse! They’ve definitely been highlighting that connection in all the trailers and promotional stuff for GOAT.

Sony’s film GOAT offers a fresh take, moving away from typical comic book stories. It centers on Will Harris, a little goat with a huge ambition: to become a professional “roarball” player. As he chases his dream, Will faces challenges from much larger and stronger opponents.

February is usually a quiet month for movie ticket sales, but the film GOAT proved to be an exception. It earned over $100 million in the United States and Canada, and with international sales added in, it’s now made a total of $190.5 million worldwide.

Although some critics didn’t think it quite lived up to the hype, the movie GOAT was generally well-received. It earned an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 7/10 review from ScreenRant’s Gregory Nussen. Viewers seemed to enjoy it even more, giving it a 93% rating.

Stephen Curry, the NBA star, significantly helped promote the film. Over the last few years, Curry has been gradually moving into film production. Besides this film, he also produced and directed the Sundance documentary short, The Baddest Speechwriter of All, which came out earlier in 2024.

Beyond its ties to Curry and Sony, the movie GOAT is created by the same animators who made KPop Demon Hunters, a massive global hit on Netflix in 2025. This suggests GOAT will also be popular when it starts streaming in a few weeks.
