Now that the Wellbrexa case is wrapped up, all attention is on season 3 of Matlock. Revivals are trendy in television, but they’re surprisingly hard to pull off successfully. When CBS launched Matlock season 1 with its unexpected direction, viewers immediately responded well to Kathy Bates’ take on the procedural drama, especially considering it was initially presented as a fresh spin on Andy Griffith’s beloved series.
Everyone was excited for the return of Matlock in the 2025-2026 season, and for good reason. The creative team, led by Jennie Snyder Urman, built a compelling second season that continued the Wellbrexa storyline while also developing the characters more fully. By the end of season two, Madeline and Olympia had a much stronger bond, and the satisfaction of seeing Senior and his accomplices finally arrested for the Wellbrexa case. These developments set the stage for future seasons of the show.
Matlock Season 3 Is Officially Confirmed By CBS
Good news for fans: CBS has officially announced that Matlock will be back for a third season! Unlike NBC and ABC, who haven’t revealed their fall 2026 schedules yet, CBS made early decisions about which shows to renew and which to cancel. This not only eases the worry for viewers and those working on the shows, but also gives CBS time to plan and add new programs to their lineup.
While season two of Matlock saw a drop in viewership compared to its first season, the show remained both popular and well-regarded by critics. CBS renewed it shortly after it premiered, but made a decision about a potential third season relatively early – in January 2026.
When Will Matlock Season 3 Release?
CBS has announced its plans for the 2026-2027 television season, and that includes a confirmed release date for season 3 of Matlock. However, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Madeline and Olympia return. CBS has decided to delay the premiere of the new season until mid-season, meaning new episodes won’t air until winter.
We don’t have a firm premiere date for season 3 of Matlock yet, but new seasons usually start in January after the holidays. CBS also hasn’t decided how many episodes the new season will have. The first two seasons had 19 and 16 episodes, respectively.
What Matlock Season 3’s Story Will Be
The season 2 finale of Matlock wrapped up the initial storyline, giving the writers more freedom with the show’s direction in season 3. While the season will deal with the consequences of the arrests at Jacobson Moore, it’s still uncertain if Senior and the others will actually go to jail. The situation is further complicated by Julian’s arrest, even though he helped with the investigation.
I was so excited to hear from Urman that season 3 of Matlock is going to jump ahead in time after the finale! And even better, there’s a chance Madeline and Olympia might strike out on their own and start their own law firm. Honestly, that sounds amazing – it would be great for both of them as characters, and I think it would be good for the show too. It could mean more self-contained cases each week instead of always having one big story arc going on.
