As Paramount+ promotes season 4, it seems to be moving away from the more unusual storylines of past Star Trek series. Strange New Worlds, which started in 2022 and follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew, quickly became a fan favorite. While the show has received generally positive feedback over its three seasons, excitement for its most unconventional episodes seems to be fading.
Following the popularity of the musical episode and a team-up with Star Trek: Lower Decks in its second season, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds started trying out more unusual storytelling. While these experiments worked well in season 2, some choices in season 3 – like a story focused on Vulcans and a holodeck-based mystery – didn’t quite land with viewers. The new trailer for season 4 seems to be a return to the traditional Star Trek style, based on the feedback from season 3.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Teaser Promises More Classic Trek
The latest trailer from Paramount for the upcoming film highlights the franchise’s enduring spirit of discovery. Using lines like, “Space is limitless. It has beauty, and it has terror,” the trailer emphasizes both the wonder and the risks of venturing into the unknown.
Similar to the original Star Trek, the trailer features the crew discovering unfamiliar planets and civilizations. There’s even a moment where James Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) says, “Let’s boldly go,” clearly referencing the show’s legacy. The trailer emphasizes action and adventure, with glimpses of dinosaurs and what appears to be a Western-style episode.
The trailer is full of heartfelt moments, hinting at the biggest obstacles these characters have ever faced. It strongly emphasizes character development and takes risks with its storytelling, reminiscent of the best in the genre. While it’s not entirely serious, the trailer prioritizes emotional depth, keeping the focus on the characters we already care about.
The new trailer hints at a season filled with adventure for Strange New Worlds, but it won’t be non-stop action. We also see glimpses of more personal, character-driven scenes, including a particularly dramatic moment with Captain Kirk. While it’s still unclear how everything will unfold, season 4 looks like it will deliver classic Star Trek stories focused on discovery, excitement, and the characters themselves.
Strange New Worlds Season 4 Will Still Have Some Experimental Content
Although this short preview highlights a traditional Star Trek style, Paramount+ has confirmed that season 4 of Strange New Worlds will include an episode featuring puppets. This preview doesn’t show any hint of those puppets, instead sticking to the familiar elements of Strange New Worlds.
We know a puppet-focused episode is planned, which makes us wonder how far season 4 of Strange New Worlds will push creative boundaries. The show’s musical episode demonstrated its ability to take risks, but it’s still uncertain how much more of that we’ll see in the new season.
Following disappointing results from Star Trek: Section 31 and other recent attempts, it’s understandable that Paramount+ would want to return to the core of what makes Star Trek appealing. Only time will tell if this strategy works, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has consistently been the most well-received Star Trek series in recent years.
The future of Star Trek may depend on how well seasons four and five of Strange New Worlds perform. While the trailer hints at exciting sci-fi adventures – including action, space battles, and even dinosaurs – it remains to be seen how these elements will blend together. Strange New Worlds has proven it can deliver both innovative and traditional Star Trek stories, which gives me reason to be optimistic.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 premieres Thursday, July 23, on Paramount+.
