As a huge fan of both DOOM and AI, I was blown away to hear that ChatGPT can actually play DOOM! Someone challenged it with the classic question – ‘Can it run DOOM?’ – and amazingly, the answer is yes. You can literally play the original game right inside the chat window. It’s incredible!

For more than thirty years, DOOM has been the go-to test for anyone creating something new. Whether it’s developing advanced technology like artificial intelligence or even growing biological tissues, a common first step is seeing if it can run this iconic first-person shooter.

It’s no surprise many people are wondering how AI will impact game development. Two years ago, Google researchers showed us an AI could create a playable version of DOOM in real-time. Now, we’re seeing even more advanced progress.

You can now play the classic 1993 first-person shooter game right inside AI chatbots! Simply type the correct commands, and you’ll be battling demons in Hell – all without ever exiting the chat window.

Software engineer makes DOOM playable inside AI chatbots

Software engineer Chris Nager recently achieved this, as Engadget initially reported. Instead of redirecting you to another website or service, they managed to run the game directly within your chat window.

It can work across LLM clients like ChatGPT and Claude, and if executed right, can work by typing in just one lone command: “Play DOOM.”

Suddenly, DOOM shows up right in your chat window, letting you know it’s ready to play instantly – no downloads or website visits needed.

“It’s always exciting to see people get DOOM working on different platforms,” explained Nager in a blog post about how the project was made. “This shows that AI models like ChatGPT and Claude are powerful enough to actually run the game DOOM.”

Plus, it even works a little bit when you’re chatting with AI on your phone, so if you want a quick DOOM fix on the go, you have another way to play.
